Lessa, Weyrwoman of Benden by Silraen Lessa, Weyrwoman of Benden by Silraen
Here is Lessa of Pern from the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. She has just been taken from Ruatha Hold - and her life as a drudge - to Impress the golden queen dragon and become Weyrwoman of Benden by F'lar, rider of bronze Mnementh. And I drew her here after she took her first bath in over ten years - it's symbolic of how she washed away the grime of her past and is starting anew. < ---Well, at least I think so ;)

"...She would rather meet the man in the presence of a sleepy dragon than in a sleeping room. She started across the floor and, out of the corner of her eye, caught sight of a strange woman as she passed a polished piece of metal hanging on the wall.

Amazed, she stopped short, staring, incredulous, at the face the metal reflected. Only when she put her hands to her prominent cheekbones in a gesture of involuntary surprise and the reflection imitated the gesture did she realize she looked at herself.

Why, that girl in the reflector was prettier than the Lady Tela, the clothman's daughter! But so thin. ... And her hair...it stood out around her head like an aureole. It wouldn't lie contained."

Exceptional! Can see all the poofs of stingy hair springing up once clean. I can see her about to try to pat them down to keep the tangles out.

I've got a Pern book, but I haven't read much of it.
However, being a Terry Pratchett fan, I understand what exactly was spoofed in the first book, The Colour of Magic (The fact that everyone has apostrphes in their names, for a perfect example).

I've read all of the Pern books :) Except Todd McCaffrey's ones. Those killed the series for me. But Anne's are the best! :aww:

This is a beautiful capture of that character. You've just epitomized the "wildness" Lessa still had at this point. Just gorgeous, with such amazing detail!! Wow.

EXCELLANT art! I love the expression, and I REALLY love that eye... so perfect! And you have some great detailing with the stray hair strands. I've always imagined Lessa as looking like a thinner version of Amy Lee from Evanescence, but this is very beautiful :D Did you draw this completely from your mind or did you have a photo of someone to work from?

I had a reference :D It was an ad taken from Vogue magazine - the issue with the Drew Barrymore photoshoots with a lion for Beauty and the Beast. :) I remember looking at it and thinking to myself, "That's _so_ Lessa..." ;)

wow this is also how I imagined lessa!
Excellent job on the hair! only thing is It would look more complete if you added her other eye in... Its still excellent, but it would look even better then...
What medium is it? pencils or carcoal/pastels.. or both?

Thanks! :D Yeah, about her other eye, I was going to...but then I got lazy because the reference picture was just too vague and it was hard to make it out ;) I might redraw it one day! I used a mechanical pencil (0.5 lead) and a dark, Prismacolor HB shading pencil

Prismacolor shading pencils are the BEST

I've only ever used prismacolour pencils in Ireland, (a long time ago ;) ) but I'm not sure where I can get them in Australia...
