I finished this drawing yesterday and will ship it to its new owner today It shows a lovely couple of king penguins, the second largest kind of penguin (the largest being the emperor penguin).
The beautiful reference photo was taken by Brian Gratwicke in 2012 and shared under CC BY 2.0: flic.kr/p/bMu7bZ The drawing was done using Creta Color H, HB, 2B and 6B pencils as well as my new Faber Castell stump (Estompe). I never liked smudging much, but I had to try it out for those very soft shadows in the background and I must say I like it now I still prefer shading for foregrounds, but the smudging technique creates some nice effects as well.
It's a small drawing (about A5, 15x21 cm), and yet I used up two thirds of my 6B pencil (it is so soft and half of the graphite was either lost in the sharpening process or lost as powder on the paper that I had to blow away every 3 strokes )
I'm grateful for this lovely commission Speaking of commissions, now that I have finished this one, I can't wait to get a new one Send me a message if you're interested: Sillageuse@gmail.com More info here: sillageuse.deviantart.com/jour…
