I had the extreme privilege to visit a refinery a couple of months ago and with the exceptional authorisation of the Refinery of Grandpuits in France I had this plate, and couldn't resist turning it into a sci-fi matte painting.

I assure you, the visit was just awesome, I know I know a refinery is not the glamourous place ever but it is just another world. You feel like being in a gloomy scene from Blade Runner movie, with steam, pipes everywhere, noise, and oil smells. I went around 35m up the ground just exactly where the two aliens are. Kind of creepy he he...!

Hope you will like it, this is mostly 2D for I pushed further my painting skills. Basically only the main spaceships have been modelled in Zbrush but postworked quite a lot.

Cheers for your favs and comments!
Textures and stocks are mine.

I love this piece! I actually worked at a refinery in Fort McMurray (Alberta, Canada) for 3 years, and you have done an amazing job of turning a typically bleak setting into something awe inspiring! It really is hard to describe the scale of everything at a refinery to people who have never been to one in person, but you have captured it here. Great work!

Thanks a lot, really appreciated!! I have worked in Oil company for 8 years and most people don't get the beauty of rusted pipes and huge cargo etc... When I was there it was Blade Runner feeling with steam, pipes everywhere impressive scale. Such an inspiring environment for sci-fi he he!!

First time I've ever heard of being in one as a privilege lol. There are lots of plants and refineries up where I live. From ground level, all you see is a maze of pipe catalytic towers, boilers and whatnot.

Normally, you can't have access to such places mainly for security reasons. That's why being able to shot there is a real priviledge.

Yeah, there is that!

So I have a question to ask, would it be alright if I used some of your art as stock images for backgrounds within my 3D work? Sometimes I need backdrops like this, and though I doubt I'd ever get this good to create on this scale. I figured I'd just ask you. If you dont allow the use of your art, it's all good. This piece has been in my favs for quite some time so I guess I didnt think to ask until now

I'm flattered you request some of my artwork for your work but unfortunately they are not stock at all but piece of art itself. I'm sorry to say no but I appreciate you asked.

I know their not stock imagery, I meant that was the intended purpose that I wanted to use them for, as stocks. But alright, thank you for replying back.

Take away the flying ships and it would be 10/10 (I find that's the case in many of your pictures). Nevertheless, amazing work!!!

Thanks, I appreciate your honesty! The goal of spaceships is to give some movement to the scene and strengthen the focal point. I tend to get rid of this trick, but I admit. I really love playing with spaceships ah ah!!!

Hehe, who can blame you :P I love your more polluted or industrial scenery, though I think it works better when it looks brooding, quiet and sluggish, rather than having soaring, fast spaceships above. Still, the ships do look awesome in design!
