Yeeeeah, okay, my titles for these are kinda lame. Moving on!

The second half of the Aztec-themed antagonist/potagonist assignment. She's meant to represent absorption of culture, the gift of museums, that sort of thing- thus the codex folding behind her. Had a blast designing this one.

More Aztec themed drawings, you're making me drool puddles here! I love all the symbolism and patterns. Very clever design, I can see you put a lot of research into it and that you're knowledgeable of the culture, really quite awesome :)

Your characters are all so fascinating. I was wondering though, with the face paint and costumes, do you make a lot of it up as you go along, or does it have some sort of real-life meaning as well? I'm definitely adding this one to my favs! :)

Everything tends to have some thought behind it, yes. Spirals are symbols fo Quetzalcoatl, who was known as a bringer of culture to the Aztecs, and I wanted her to be the embodiment of culture and learning. Thus the codices of information draping behind her, thus the round mandalas emphasizing the head (mind) and the ears (learning), along with the jade colour accents drawing the eye there. Then there's the explosion of upwards feathers, implying the resultant thought coming from culture, each textured, long and complex.

So yes- there's some meaning. ;)

Now THAT is gorgeous. It's great to see someone embracing the themes of a culture and making something wonderful from it, rather than just borrowing the "cool" elements and making some sort of lackluster derivative.

EXCELLENT work. The codex is a wonderful effect.
