Random Favourites

I pick my favourites, not neccessarily based off talent or content but by impact, style, beauty, because it made me laugh or numerous other random reasons. Regardless of whether or not a peice reflects something I'm into or not, if it makes me doubletake, and want to see it again, then it deserves it.

ABOUT ME

A proud Canadian who needs about four more hours in the day to get everything she wants done. Shonna is a writer, artist, and gamer, while working full time and raising two kids. Creativity is where she finds her centre. It is both invigorating and frustrating. Currently, Shonna is working toward attaining a book deal for the series she is working on, Lost Infernal. My biggest fandoms? Final Fantasy, Halo (if you couldn't tell from the tattoo), and Dragon Age. I also collect action figures and merchandise. No, I don't keep them in boxes. I display them or wear them proudly.

Visit Shonna's other websites at, www.lostinfernal.com and descriptionary.wordpress.com.

EXPOS & COMMISSIONS

Shonna sells select portraits at the Calgary and Edmonton expos. This is the only place she sells art. As each piece takes 40-60 hours, Shonna does not take commissions.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

Through the years I've worked on the shirtless man-art, I've had several discussions with people about double-standards and message. I want to share my thoughts on this:

WHY I DRAW WHAT I DO
I actually started by drawing women and eventually started drawing men. I find male musculature challenging. A subtle shift of an arm can completely change the shape of a muscle in the torso. I also find the angles of the face a greater challenge. That is what I am trying to do - challenge myself. The subjects of my art are also based off requests. The more I hear a name come up, the more likely I am to draw them.

- EXCEPTIONS: When choosing a subject, I try to take into consideration a few very important things - if this is a real person, what is their personality? I've actually chosen subjects then, in study of their demeanor during interviews, backed away from drawing them. These are the things I take into consideration:
1. does the subject pose or do work without a shirt? And I mean more than once. Sometimes contracts in movies or shows demand shirtless work. This has a big influence on what body types I draw, obviously.
2. does the person seem comfortable being portrayed this way? This is mostly guess work, based off personality. I have gotten it wrong before. Most times, I seem to have gotten it right. In fact, I've had several subjects request prints of their portrait. Again, this had a big impact on the body types I draw, limiting it. I'd totally draw a dad-bod guy if I knew he would be comfortable with the work.
3. has the subject expressed their opinion on social media or elsewhere? When possible, I tag the subject in posts about my intent and then in WIP shots. This way they, or the people monitoring their account, might see it's being done. Their body, their rules. If they express discomfort, or I hear of apparent discomfort through my fans who take prints to them for signing, I stop production or may even pull the piece. I have only pulled one piece so far, due to the subject being uncomfortable with it. I have been in touch with several subjects via social media who have been totally game.
4. I will only ever draw the subject in a body that is theirs! This is a big one for me. I take all my subject's bodies from pictures of them. I even try to identify areas where editing has occurred and get rid of it. I try my damnedest to stick to source material. I think it would be repugnant to draw someone in a body that has been changed from their actual physique.

DOUBLE STANDARDS
Listen, this is a touchy one but here is my opinion on the matter. Anyone of any gender is allowed to have preferences. Unless those preferences include kids or animals, you are entitled to them. The problem is not in your preference, it is in people trying to make others conform to their ideals. The problem is someone harassing another because they have a different preference. The problem is someone going on line and calling someone fat or ugly. The problem is in unrealistic representations of society, eliminating people not in an 'ideal', whether that be in appearance or disability, or so many other ways. We are a diverse people. Have your preference, but don't be an asshole about it. Plain and simple.

MESSAGE
I am not here to send a message about appearance. If you think so, go up there and reread everything. The thing is, your value is not determined by your body. People of all genders, say it aloud! You are beautiful as you are, fuck what other people say. If you work hard to be ripped or not at all and just accept what your body does based on your chosen lifestyle, than never ever believe you are are less worthy than another person. Who you are should be judged only on your actions and the way you treat others. That is your true value. If you want to talk appearance then remember this, almost everyone has a range of what they find physically attractive. There are people attracted to all sorts of bodies.

When guys come up to my booth and make a joke about their body not looking like one of my drawings, I can assure you that when you walked up, your body was the last thing on my mind. I looked at your smile. I appreciated the fact you had the courage to not be intimidated by me or my work, I talk with you and I see your personality and if you are kind or not. The last thing to cross my mind was your body.

Good people fall in love with people , not bodies. Not hair lines. Not skin. A physical appearance may limit or increase the number of people who are attracted to you physically. That is reality. Still, never settle for someone who cannot love all of you. I understand that loneliness is hard, but it is still better than being with someone who is not right for you.

(and, yes, I get body issues. I have my own. I struggle with it. I am not in the commonly depicted 'ideal' body for women.)

ON ANOTHER NOTE - WHY I LEFT YOUR DA GROUP

(a little rant from a long time DA memeber)

I've been with DA for a long time now, and I'm pretty loyal to the groups I join. That said, I've run into one problem waaaay to much and I'm now leaving groups that have this problem.

When you created your folders, you're folders overlap and my art gets declined because you see this as my problem, not yours.

Example: Fanart, Portrait, Graphite ... Yeah, most of my work goes across all three. NO, I'm not going to message one of your admins to ask, because that is one admin and when I submit, I may get approved or declined because another person's opinion. Also, I'm a member of a bunch of groups. I'm not going to remember your weird rules by the time I go post again. Stop thinking I will!

Paul Wesley/Stefan Salvatore - Vampire Diaries

Character: Paul Wesley - Stefan Salvatore - The Vampire Diaries - CW

Tools Used: Mechanical Pencil, 4H - 8B Pencils. Paintbrushes for blending.

Waaaaaay back when I was my daughter's age, I read The Vampire Diaries, by L.J. Smith. I read all the books at a pace of about one a day.  When they were bringing the books to TV, I was REALLY skeptical. I also decided not to pick up the books again as I read them as a teenager and didn't want to ruin my good memories of them with my adult/writer's brain. I watched the show to see how well they held to memory. I already knew Elena would not be the blonde 'all-american girl' and the brothers were not twins, but I accept that sometimes things need to adapt to budget limitations and nor change with the times. I thought that they did a fairly good job sticking to source material, considering...until they ran out of source material.

I haven't been able to watch any of the later seasons because Netflix Canada doesn't have them. What got me to draw this, however, was the fact that both Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley are coming to the Calgary Expo and we should all know by now that I have a table at the Calgary Expo! Only ... Paul Wesley cancelled after I started drawing ... (grumble)

Stefan Salvatore is, of course, a character from the Vampire Diaries on the CW, originally conceived by author L.J. Smith,  to which I have no affiliation. This is puuuuure fanart.

Waaaaaay back when I was my daughter's age, I read The Vampire Diaries, by L.J. Smith. I read all the books at a pace of about one a day. Immediately, I loved Damon (because villains seem to be a thing for me in fantasy). When they were bringing the books to TV, I was REALLY skeptical. I actually even thought Ian Somerhalder's portrayal of Damon was pretty damned awesome.

Character: Aaravos - The Dragon Prince - Netflix

Tools Used: Mechanical Pencil, 4H - 8B Pencils. Paintbrushes for blending.

It took VERY little for me to develop a love for the Dragon Prince, an anime on Netflix, with many creative ties to Avatar: The Last Airbender (the anime). I really enjoy this show and hope it goes on for sometime. I have a ... thing ... for villains. Just in stories. Aaravos rode in right on the cunning, manipulative bastard train. He's also one of the few characters I've done in their official garb, because ... well, he's essentially shirtless and SCREW HIS DAMNED PURDY SKIN! With all the gradients and stars (a lot of which you'll only see on the original), this was certainly a challenge!

Aaravos is, of course, a character from Netflix to which I have no affiliation. This is puuuuure fanart.
