“Sophie Annabel”
16"x20" Arches paper
Mixed Mediums

One of the main pieces that I had been working on at the time of my stroke in July was this portrait of my granddaughter, Sophie which was the main feature of my exhibit @ this year’s “Access The Arts” at the county fair. Just two days before, I was very blessed to have had it at least slightly over 80% complete at the time of my incident or it’s very likely that I would have had to cancel my participation in the event! Something that would have made me very unhappy, mind you, as I had already been out the year before due to surgery. I’m very fortunate —That I was still able to compete and that I survived & recovered my medical situation.

I created and posted two videos on my FB of myself working on this preliminary rough sketch. Whenever I work on a full-size canvas piece like this, I generally will create and do a study in rough pencils of the subject. I can make all my major decisions and any necessary changes in this stage on a cheaper medium without risking the more expensive final canvas. This is "technically" the first step; a matter of roughing out the subject’s profile. No major details, just the specifics. It’s so very easy to make young children (especially babies) look too old.

Completed preliminary sketch in graphite and Prismacolor grayscale; cir. July 2017
