DBHC - Majunianoko - V12 by Shinjuchan DBHC - Majunianoko - V12 by Shinjuchan
Tehanue., Majunianoko ( テハ ヌ - 魔Jrの子供 )

While Gohan’s busy taking care of *cough* matters with his papa, I also finished Tehanue last night.

Since I began sharing pages from the online doujin PASSION: AS A RIVER FLOWS I did over the passed few weeks, besides a lot of attention, I’ve also received a great deal of questions from many of you who are new to, or are just discovering my DBZ-inspired work. A couple that were most prominent were ‘Do I (have I) worked in the manga industry?’ and ‘Who is that red-cloaked Namekian lad in my gallery?” *lol*

The answer to the first question is yes I have. I’ve been a part of two publication circles headquartered in Japan. Huryuki (HURI PUB) from 1996-2002 and ACT since 2002-present. I’ve also done one time joint venues for Yokohama, although it has been some time.

That crimson-caped Namekian is Tehanue (alternately ‘Majunianoko’) テハ ヌ - 魔Jrの子供 the son of Piccolo. He was one of a number new characters I designed/illustrated that debut in the pages of Dragonball HC: The Hob-nudian Chapters, a printed DBZ doujin manga released by Huryuki. Beginning in 1996, it ran until 2001. Without any doubt at all, Majunianoko was my favorite, proudest contribution to the title. 14-years old when HC ended, he was (and still is) the most popular, frequently request character from that particular series --So much so that those who haven’t seen/read HC tend to assume that the books are about him. ( ♩ ♪ You’re so vain ..you probably think this doijin’s about you ♩ ♪♩ ♪)

Tehanue is a play on ‘Tejano’, a popular style of music with heavy roots in the Latino culture. As well, his familiar crimson cape is a nudge in two directions --Gohan and his grandfather, King Piccolo Sr.

I know. Haven't had much reason (or opportunity) to do so. It's great --I think even healthy-- to revisit past accomplishments. Not just the good ones, but the bad ones too so that we can make peace w/ those.

Wha, I thought I'd commented on this - why haven't I? Gah.
This is awesome. I absolutely love the colours (both the choice thereof and the way they're shaded) and how glossy he is XD
He would go so well as a Christmas decoration too! :)

Yes I do. Not necessarily all manga all the time however. I think a lot of people outside of Japan have a misunderstanding of that, or how it works. The Japanese are very much in love with Disney and American comic books. They want to see that, or at least know you can do it if requested.

I was discovered actually. I’ve done a lot of single pieces for various conventions over the years --anime, sci-fi, Transformers, etc., which is really where the big money is made. If you can get into convention work ... *nods* ..yeah. That’s the way. Fans are generally impulse shoppers at these type of events. They’re excited. They want keepsakes to show they were there. You could take a single piece of art, for example, run off about 500 posters, and sell those out pretty easy depending on the subject matter.

i'm aware lol. my senior project is actually about Japanese vs Western Animation and how "comic" and Manga" differ, and how disney inspired a whole bunch of manga when it was being heavily created in the 50's and 60's, such as how Betty Boop and bambi influenced "Astro Boy"

i need to get my ass to a f*cking convention.... XDDD thanks for the tips

Oh, very much. I think they like the western style just about as much as we like theirs. As a matter of fact, here’s something I did just recently for ACT over the summer for the Tokyo Comiket that featured the WWE Wrestling:

There is no ‘real’ direct translation of the title into English that sounds quite so good, so I’ll just say ‘Delivery Monsters’ or ‘Monstrous (impact) Delivery’. The main reason why I had been requested to do the covers and title pages were because --besides the fact that they already knew I was a WWE fans who had run Undertaker’s fan club for years-- is because they really wanted that ‘American-ized manga’ (As they seem to like to term it) look for the book. I gotta tell ya, that was a pretty interesting experience making Undertaker both look and yet fit into a manga. I loved it and it did pretty damn good out there. A lot of buys. That’s always good.

We lost one of the girls I worked with during the tsunami last year :( She drowned. Broke my heart and just devastated our lil’ ACT family for months! I had worked w/ her on 3 separate projects including the original ‘Emerald Enigma’, which was a Namekian-themed art book.
