Description

I have been working on this for so long that I honestly don't even know what to say now that I have finished it. It's the first major project I've done for myself since I remember. When I finished my to-do list for the first time since 2007, I wanted to make myself something really nice and push improvement of myself as an artist. On this drawing, I actually went out of my way to correct anatomy and to detail it further than I've ever detailed anything.

It was extremely monotonous during the shading, but now that it is finished, it was really worth it. I believe this stands as a sufficient representation of my current skill level, containing both subjects I excel at drawing and ones that I don't. I don't plan on drawing anything this involved again in a long time, but I will be using this image in some personal things in the near future (which you will see/notice).

I honestly intend to challenge myself with an actual background on this picture in the future, but for its purposes, I think that the current background is sufficient. I also kindof just want to label this drawing as 'done' in my books so that I can focus on other things. I have a really bad habit of saving my PSDs in a flattened form, but this time I made sure to keep my layers intact and I set this drawing up in a way that it would be really easy for me to work on a background in the future.

You may also notice that I changed some of Shinerai's design. I changed his tail feathers to make the pinions a little more natural, and I also changed the pattern on the inside of the wing. I'm very pleased with the changes.

tl;dr, I thought I was gonna die drawing this but i learned a lot and am super proud of it.
I saved a big version of this for you guys under the download. I hope you enjoy it.

Well, you decide, but I would love to see a progress video from you and your amazing art style!!

I’ll be honest. I was planning on doing some gift art for you along with many other people, but I just haven’t gotten around in doing so. ;-; I will keep watching your art though! It’s so perfect! Just..breath taking! Each and every one!

How is every little detail crystal clear? This looks gorgeous and perfect. When I draw detailed things it's hard to see the details in the finished piece. How do you preserve the quality? Btw your art is inspirational to me!

Hello, and thank you for the kind words ;u; I think this drawing is a testament to my level of skill at the time I made it. I smashed every tiny detail into it that I could and, honestly, I think it proves that a technically well-done piece is not always the most captivating piece.

But to answer your question! Usually, what I do is work on a really big canvas, so I can make my details clear. Once I flatten the image and size it down for web viewing, it gets just a little blurry. Then I will use the 'smart sharpen' filter in Photoshop to crisp up the edges of my details just a little bit. That will help bring it back to life! What I also like to do is duplicate the flattened image, and gaussian blur it quite a bit. Then, set that blurred layer to 'overlay' and turn the opacity down a lot - just let the overlay show enough so you get a little bloom and vibrancy from the colors. If you do that, and then flatten it, and then do the smart sharpen thing after, it looks really nice c: You can also do interesting things with your blurry overlay like desaturate it, or make it into other colors.

Anyway, I hope those tips help! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask any time.

ugh I know this is quite an old pic but holy crap this is just amazing. I keep coming back to it and I can't help but feel so inspired and awed everytime I look at it- the colour scheme, position and details are just incredible. You are a very talanted artist and you help give me the courage to try new things and to continue on even when I just feel like giving up <3
I'm so glad I watched you :D

This is quite possibly the most detailed, supreme-looking dragon design, that my eyes have ever gazed upon. *.* Also, I must ask, what those beautiful, stone-like patterns behind the clouds?

Ah thank you so much! The patterns in the clouds are from this Yeigahaien

Well, I've made little bit not constructive comment, but what I love in this painting is firstly that amazing anatomy, perfect matched kind of creamy colors, great design of dragon, scales and cute featers :>.

Ah thank you! It means a lot to me because I really put a lot of work into correcting the anatomy after I made the sketch and adding in all the details.
