Major Work Visual Arts - The Applicants - 1 of 5

This is my major work for Visual Arts, HSC.

I submitted a series of images inspired by surrealist artists and issues of today. The underlining theme is how animals have been evicted from their traditional jobs. Like Sylvia Plath's poem, "The Applicant" the characters apply for jobs:

"First, are you our sort of person?
...

Stitches to show something's missing? No, no? Then
How can we give you a thing?"

In these images, however, the applicants battle through old perspectives and symbolism. See the mousing cat, the horseless carriage, the gentle sacrificial lamb, the seeing-eye dog and the homing pigeon.

Think to images of animals in media-- often for rescued and welfare animals, all gaunt, big eyes, big ribs and dependant on humans. If animals were self sufficient, would we really let them survive? I refer of course, to the universal culling of these very applicants when they live in the wild.

It is up to the audience to weigh the options and decide... do animals survive as applicants in this modern world?
