Battletech - Wolverine

Continuing the dump of official Battletech lineart!
This "classic" (or "newseen" as the fans call it) set of mechs is intended to refresh the art for some early era mechs.
My goal was to be as faithful as possible to the originals to deliver something recognizable and iconic, yet still come up with something original.

The Wolverine is one I hadn't drawn before this project, but it's chunky "ugly" utilitarian look is something I can get behind. Coming from Dougram I didn't have to tread lightly on design choices either.
My one more divisive change is the lack of a chin turret or snout. I inquired as to if BT could feature lasers internally redirected with mirrors, which is a "no", so to me it isn't practical to have the head laser jammed right into where the pilot needs to sit. Hence, I went with the offset position.

...Another 'Mech I had fun modifying! (Even dug out my old notes, lol)

...My variant replaced the SRM-6 & ammo with 4 extra Medium Lasers, & dropped the AC/5 & ammo for a PPC, allowing the addition of 2 extra Heat Sinks. This was a fight or fighting withdraw design, as it could overheat when all these guns were fired.

...A 3050-era field refit that I tried, but didn't end up caring for dropped the SRM & the Autocannon, as well as 3 Heat Sinks in order to mount a Gauss Rifle in the arm (the SRM & AC/5 ammo was replaced with 2 tons of GR ammo). In the end, I was disappointed in this refit, alas.

I think that's a Shadowhawk... An amazing Shadowhawk...but... not a Wolverine

How so?

It's been decades, but Wolverine had some lil guns stickin out of his face, a more abstract head and a hand held autocannon... If I recall.

Then again, Shadowhawk had an AC on his shoulder...

Likely, my brain is going...

The chin guns were always an error holdover from Dougram, as in the stats it's just one laser in the head, which you can now see beside the cockpit. Arm AC and shoulder SRMs are there as they should be.
My Shadowhawk design is posted further back in my gallery.
All that said, I'm the art director for Battletech, so I get to say what is what hahaha.

Well, I do apologize for arguing. I remember all the Dougram stuff

Nah not a problem. These old classics have been out of the game so long aside from the phoenix versions that people can get rusty on recognition. Not to mention a ton of people think the game has been dead lol.

Great game. The all time king of table top wargames.

I'd still play if I had freetime. Kudoes to you on landing a slick gig. Your work is OUTSTANDING.

Very tasteful.

Well, I for one would not want to sit with my junk immediately on top of a laser (even a Battletech "small" laser).

this the 6M or 6R variant?

Just a stock 6R. All the artwork for this set was with the base variant.

Ah; finally my ride and pride of choice since forever, from my most trusted dealer of mechs.

The GM Whirlwind looks perfect; the box Magazin Plays so well to the lore.

While I never liked the "pipes", you really kept the the torso details Close to the original thanks to that.

Sadly I wasn't allowed to go full meme and have it carrying a spare magazine :D

So great to see all these classics! And I feel the same way, I always preferred the chunky and more 'realistic' looking BattleMechs for that universe.

I overall like the design, but i do prefer the laser being in the chin-turret. In the old TRO descriptions it talked about how the head mounted laser had a basically 360 degree fire arc and had to be artificially limited so it wouldn't hit the mech itself.

Still, it's a good design (and the offset laser look is probably OBJECTIVELY better, buuuuuut subjectively i like the old chin ballgag more)

Yeah, Wolverine and Archer have one of those medium lastes looking really small yet a turret design is obviously practical in general (as would be two+ seat mechs) so I'd love to keep it in. Can it move at all in this depiction? I think you could put it on a "half-wheel" so that it can aim backwards and up. :)

Sometimes I'll give torso weapons a little gimbaling, it'd be very useful. Though in this mechs case, while it could have a little internal movement, it's not as critical considering the one laser is the only linear firing torso weapon. I'd have included the turret if we were allowed to use redirection mirrors on lasers. Also, some old pieces of lore text make little sense, the old turret barely doesn't have close to a 360 firing ark nor ability to rotate as such :D

I've been waiting for this one. This was my first mech back when I played table top.

Nice~ I like the utilitarian style too~

I always pictured the laser assembly was on a gimball turret right below the cockpit. It would stick out a bit like a massive chin combined with a massive under bite. Looks a bit silly, but I always thought the Wolverine's head looked silly~
