Battletech - Warhammer by Shimmering-Sword Battletech - Warhammer by Shimmering-Sword
Time for a big ol dump of official Battletech lineart!
This "classic" (or "newseen" as the fans call it) set of mechs is intended to refresh the art for some early era mechs.
My goal was to be as faithful as possible to the originals to deliver something recognizable and iconic, yet still come up with something original.

This warhammer was one of the most iconic designs to tackle. As many of them went, I already had a personal version to start from, with improvement and CGL feedback added from there.
I set up the pose/angle and background to somewhat resemble the old intro box art.

Recall the first time I got into Battletech at a gaming convention, many years ago.  They needed a spare, and I happened to be standing by and watching the battle unfold.  I was given a Mercenary Heavy Lance that no one wanted, all 3025 designs.  The bulk of the battle I believe was being fought with 3050 - 3057 equipment.  The battle was between the Draconis Combine (attackers) and Federated Suns (defenders).  Things became seriously confused when a Clan Trinary deployed and was hitting both sides with equal fury?!   This is where my lance enters the battle with an extraction objective (in support of the Federated Suns) in one of the build up areas of the table.  The table top was giant city scape with several large park areas, so a curious mix of urban sprawl and open country to fight across.  I had a Atlas AS7-D and 3 Warhammer WHM-6Rs at my command.  Not knowing any better, I proceeded with my assigned mission.  In doing so raised nine types of hell, derailed several peoples carefully laid plans.  I had a lot of fun with both the game and most of the other players.

Legally this is not a macross mech, so HG has no right to it. Proper law never stopped an IP troll from trolling though.

I think it's fair to say though that if CGL had deviated much further from the original design, instead of only altering enough to "get away with it" then they wouldn't be in this position in the first place.

And the ONLY reason to stick to the original design is to please the grognards who probably buy the vast majority of products.  If Battletech was actually aimed at drawing in new players, those new players wouldn't give two hoots how it looked as long as it looked cool.

We already have your proposition though, the project phoenix mechs.
My redesigns are legally unique, so it's not just a matter of trying to get away with it, HG are IP trolls, nothing will stop them hating battletech for doing better with the designs.
No point redesigning them again if they're not faithful, so here we are. Always plenty of new mechs coming out for legal complication free choices too.

Sorry but this looks nothing like the Tomahawk, there are too many distinctly different design elements.

Keep telling yourself that, and the big mean scary Harmony Gold will go away!

It's a Tomahawk kiddo.

Did anyone ask you, fanboy? Get of HG's dick when you leave and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I'm not an HG fan, it's just that no matter how many iterations the designs go thru they will always encounter lawsuits. How about you get off FASA's dick...

Trololol, FASA doesn't own the rights anymore mate. You're a few decades late to the party, now let me just take my Warhammer and crush you with it. Ta-ta

There's some notable differences.  Primarily, the cockpit on this one is raised a little higher than the MWO version along with being a bit more round than its video game counterpart.  The shoulders here a bit more flared than MWO's, which has higher up and more rounded shoulders. MWO's chest juts out a bit more. The knees on MWO are bulkier as are the feet.

So similar, but I actually quite like this version better

Pretty torn between this one and Alex's redesign..both are amazing, both have some elements I like over the other... and I'm probably biased as the Warhammer has been my mech of choice since I first discovered Battletech in 1987... and I had already been using it for a year by then.. in the Robotech RPG, lol.  I'd argue this is the second most iconic of the Classic Mechs, behind only the Marauder.  And as such... polarizing. Regardless... fantastic job.  I have been really enjoying your line art on the new releases... I have to say your take on the Classic Thunderbolt is the best I have ever seen... in fact it's the first classic styled T-Bolt I have EVER liked.

Of course the best world would be combining my work with Alex's MWO work through a broad board of feedback, but even within our own companies the legal rights are a mess lol.

Excellent representation of the Warhammer.  But Harmony Gold has sued for art that looks a lot less like the unseen than your picture.  If this is official was there some sort of agreement reached?

This is an official Warhammer, haven't seen the prototype miniatures and book appearances of it floating around the last few years? :D
Of course, when HG went to sue HBS and PGI this year, they threw in my designs for CGL too.

The whole Harmony Gold nonsense can't be over soon enough.
I think i can speak for everyone with even the slightest interest in Battletech when i say that we need these redesigns in our lives.

That and the fact Harmony Gold has totally screwed up their own franchise. Robotech is basically on life support as HG milks it to sell swag while not adding anything new or substantial.

Maybe Harmony Gold can let the Warhammer issue go and maybe we'll get a good campaign for a mechwarrior game. Great stuff, man!

If they lose the license when it comes up for renewal in a few years, we'll have all the unseen back in action without issues :)

One of my all time favorite BT mechs of all time.  Sure it was ripped off Macross, but they used it better anyway!

Don't even need to call it ripped off, considering they licensed it, but yeah it fit the BT aesthetic quite well.
