Battletech - Archer by Shimmering-Sword Battletech - Archer by Shimmering-Sword
About half way through the dump of official Battletech lineart now.
This "classic" (or "newseen" as the fans call it) set of mechs is intended to refresh the art for some early era mechs.
My goal was to be as faithful as possible to the originals to deliver something recognizable and iconic, yet still come up with something original.

Here's another one that I don't believe has been shown off before, though some of you may have seen a prototype print miniature of it.
The torso and arms didn't change too much going into the official version, but the legs received a big pass of detailing.
This also has one of my most elaborate lineart backgrounds.

Very pleased you stuck with the original canon under-torso cockpit. Looks much tougher in my opinion.

this looks great! I love the modernization of the old design. very true to the classic, while bringing it out of the blocky 80s

Love Archers; they make great targets if you can push them into a corner and get inside their minimum range without too much damage!

The thing about Battletech, I never thought that Mechs should be used as artillery pieces. That should be an tanks as what not.  Enough of my rambling, this is a great looking mech that I would love to see more of in its many variants.  Specially the ones with more Energy weapons.  :D
Thank you for sharing.

I believe the running logic is that if you're gonna fill a dropship with something, bring the best. So while fire support mechs are wasteful, they can outperform a vehicle if the need for flexibility arrives.

Over all I would agree with you for the most part.  Its just units like the Base Archer really make that hard for me.  Granted that LRM might be considered "long" ranged they are still very close to the battle so having them on a Battlemech does work.  Person preconceived notion on how artillery would work does play in to it a lot.  And the fact that Battletech with all its units don't follow them is bothersome.  But its a game about big stomping robots ripping each other apart so in the end it works.    Your great art work also helps make me accept cool robots are cool. :D

Hands down far and away better then MWO's. Honestly mate they need to hire you to design mechs; this is a WAYYYYY better Archer design then MWO's

Problem is that comes down to objective opinions, and they don't need any more capacity than a single artist can provide, so they don't really have room for my work.

I like the way that you set up the missile launcher doors. Your idea of two doors per side makes more sense than the original ones.

Back in the old days in the 90s...the first Mech I ever piloted was the old 3025 Archer.
Have been in love with the design ever since...and I really like your take on it.

I love the two-piece-missile-doors.
Makes sense as two smaller doors open and shut quicker than one large.

Yeah, the configuration of these pods make a single piece door simply too long, and we got to see that in action with the awkward MWO doors.

Agreed, especially with the shadows.
Looks like they are floating aside the mech, visible when it moves.
But i like that they implemented the doors.
With all mechs that can have such.
Makes them more lifelike, i think.

What's the diffrence between a archer and a mad dog?

cockpit location XD

Archer (ARC-2R) - 70t, Inner Sphere, Standard 280 @ 64.8kph, 10 standard heat sinks (LRM-20 x2, Medium Lasers x4)
Mad Dog (Prime variant) - 60t, Clan, XL 300 @ 86.4kph, 12 C Double Heat Sinks (C LRM-20 x2, C Medium Pulse Lasers x2, C Large Pulse Lasers x2)

The Mad Dog weighs less and has less armor.  However it has more damage potential, a better chance to evade incoming fire, and the ability to reposition faster for better long-range support effectiveness.  It is also an Omnimech- meaning it can swap out components faster when being repaired, and makes it more flexible configuration-wise.
While the Archer has manipulators, it does not have the build [or stamina] for actual close-range or melee combat.  It also carries 4t (720 rounds) of LRM ammo, versus the Mad Dog's 2t (360 rounds).

I often wonder if- because the Archer is Unseen- the Mad Dog was created by FASA at the time to fill the gap, disguised by mixing the Archer/ Destroid Spartan's torso with the arms and legs of a Marauder Timber Wolf.  Defintely the Hellbringer was created this way- mishmashing the Warhammer and Archer.  However it's cousin, the Summoner, is a mishmash of the Warhammer and Thunderbolt.

I wouldn't say it fills any gaps, as they're clan mechs, but it is true some clan mechs are based on IS mechs, either from reference by artists, or straight up in the lore.

Mnn, I'm talking only about outside of lore- where the artists and writers were coming up with new designs after HG raised its high-and-mighty nose.

Yep, and they certainly did reference them, I just wouldn't say with the idea that any gap would be filled. More that it would be logical for those in the exodus to make derivatives from what they take with them... and because the artists back then were crap and heavy handedly referenced designs and poses all the time :D
