Strand Based Hair Shader

I’ve been experimenting with strand based hair for a while but I’m having a problem. I can make the hair just fine. The problem is the shader settings. I’ve changed the root, tip glossy colours and those work fine. But when I render the hair always looks too dark especially at the roots. I’ve had a good look on Google, but I can’t find any information on the strand based hair shader options. Do any of you amazing artists out there know how to make nice blonde and red hair colours for strand based hair? Or do you know where I can find some good information on how the shader works? Please let me know!
