Dear IDW 2 by Shieltar Dear IDW 2 by Shieltar

The 1st letter was quite popular, and a lot has changed since then, so I thought I'd do another one

The new IDW comic is hitting shelves, with 4 issues out this month, followed by a monthly release schedule  Which is an all round good idea.  Getting a hold of the sonic comic is not as easy as I'd like in the UK.  (what with my local comic book store being utterly inept)  But I'm going to give it a go.  New universe, fresh start.  after all that went down towards the end with the Archie comics in the wake of the ken Penders incident I totally understand why they'd feel the need to do this.  And I find myself surprisingly on board with the idea.

But I definitely want to see my favorite characters return in new roles. Not just the game cast.  As I understand it, the characters who were in the TV show are technically owned by Saga, not archie.  As the show predates the comic.  Therefore any and all characters in that show should be available to IDW.  Only now with a new universe, they have the opportunity to cast them in new roles.  Perhaps as key players in the struggle of regions Sonic and the gang end up visiting on a semi regular basis.  That way, when there all teamed up.  everything would be so much more bad ass, as they'd be bringing with them a whole host of freedom fighting groups we actually care about.

For example, I'd quite like to see what would happen if Bunnie Rabbot was in charge of a freedom fighter group of partially robotized mobians.

here's hoping.

Whilst I am aware of Sega's stance on Sally and co....I have faith.

In recent years, they have been listening to the fans more.  so maybe?  But as said before, they're not appearing this year and the door is not closed on them.

You should let the series use this design.

Their chances of returning are much greater now then they were a month ago.

But we still need to keep them in the spotlight so we can at least convince them further on why they should come back.

Note that the "old favorites" mentioned in your picture caption are (cue Capt. Obvious) all girls. That, to me, was one of the things that really held back the Archie storytelling: the notion that Sonic was, at heart, a boy's book that was supposed to be heavy on the action. And when there was a girl's story written by someone who knew what she was doing (Tania del Rio's "Stargazing"), it was literally a game changer for the comic, introducing the VR Nicole.

But that's just me.

I don't think Stargazing was a big game changer at all. All it did was show Nicole in her Lynx form for the first time.

But I do agree that the comic got too feminine in its last few years.
The biggest example was with Champions and all of those obnoxious scenes with Amy and Honey.
Or how one of the universe Arcs ended with Sonic celebrating his victory at Cream's Tea party.
I mean, Really? a Tea party? What happened to just partying at Uncle Chuck's Chili Dog parlor?

IDW's stance on the Freedom Fighters is this. They aren't appearing this year, but the door isn't closed on them.

I wouldn't keep your hopes up. To keep this brief...

-SEGA controls what characters do and do not appear in their stuff.
-They do not like the Freedom Fighters, maybe because they do not fit how THEY think Sonic should be.
-If they do not want a character to be used, they will not be used. Ever. Hence why characters like Shade and Chip have been MIA for years now.
-The lawsuit and their repeated game-related failures made them want to play uber-safe.
-The IDW comic was written with their quarter-arsed version of the FF in mind, and in place of the FF itself.
-Having the Freedom Fighters in something they're clearly not supposed to be in would only result in something akin to Shadow in Sonic Boom - a complete waste of everyone's time and focus on characters that may need it more.

Best let the FF end on a vaguely positive note and allow them to live on in fan creations, than to be dragged out and bastardised for no other reason than "you want them in there".

While that is true, IDW and Sega know that many people like the Freedom Fighters.  My belief is that they are not appearing until after 2018 because IDW is not only playing it safe, but also trying to prove to Sega they won't screw up like Archie did.  Also, new continuities will bring changes.  It is a rule of reboots.  Look at Sonic Boom, where they made Knuckles all brawn and no brains, Amy more mature, and Vector (in his appearance) as a reality TV star.

Also, I bet IDW would do a good job rebooting the Freedom Fighters.  In fact, after seeing a YouTube video of the first comic with a voiceover, it seems IDW knows how to do Sonic better than Sega can (IDW even brought Tails back to his former glory, not the coward Sega made him into in Sonic Forces).

It could be at least early 2019 Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters may return to IDW Sonic. There may be Sonic Town Hall Panels at the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con and 2018 New York Comic-Con about this.

SEGA is also aware that people like Shade and Chip and Infinite, even Elise. They're still not coming back. They didn't like the FF in the show, they didn't like them in the comics and now that they're dead, they want NOTHING to do with them, fan praise be damned. There's only ONE group of people they'll listen to, and I'm fairly sure you know who they are.

Thing is, SEGA is a cowardly company. If something doesn't work because of their innate stupidity, they won't get up, dust themselves off and try again. They will instantly dump the concept and pretend it never happened. And the OTHER thing is, Sega of Japan runs the show. And at this point, it goes without saying that Japanese businesses care so very little about Western markets. SEGA's not QUITE as anti-consumerist as Nintendo, say, but that doesn't mean they're any smarter about what people want. That's why Tails is a coward in Sonic Forces, and the guy who wrote 06 came back to write it. They just don't know, and in some ways, I doubt they even care. Not when they've got Sonic Mania to happily give them an excuse to pimp Classic out further.

And I don't know about you, but I don't remember seeing Sally in those overrated Genesis games...

And this is why we have people like Ian Flynn who will fight for Sally and other characters who were not made for the games.

And Sally only appeared as a cameo in Sonic Spinball.  But the fact is, even if Sega does not like them, they realize that people still like them, and if the Freedom Fighters are not welcome, then Sega would have told IDW they cannot have characters like Tangle or Ruff and Tumble because let's face it, those three's chances of appearing in the games is as non-existent as Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters.

Personally, I'm amazed SEGA didn't take the opportunity to release there entire roster of characters, including the freedom fighters as DLC replacements for Origional the character in sonic forces.  It would definitely have boosted sales significantly.

TBH, it's been said that Sally was designed after Ricky, one of the animal buddies that is used in the classic games as a battery source to power the Badniks, so that may be why she is not used in the games.

The sad truth is, over the years, SEGA has displayed a larger self belief in it's ability to tell a decent sonic story, than it actually possesses.  Many of the "good" Soinc games actually have terrible story's.  But there good, because the game element of the game is good.  No one plays a sonic game for the narrative.

Take for evidence Sonic Forces.  A game with a narrative structure so vast that it forces it down your throat the whole game.  But the entire story is terrible from start to finish.  It's was so badly executed that IDW had to produce 4 comics in addition to the game, to make it in any way make sense.

If you want to find good Sonic stories, you genuinely have to look outside the games, to the TV shows or the comics.  and of all the sonic media outlets, the comics have consistently provided the better narrative, and the games the worst.  Meaning that While SEGA own the characters.  They would be better off letting the experts from outside the company deal with the story telling.

If IDW think a character would be good for the story, SEGA would do well to listen.

That is true.  Sadly, Sega only thinks of the money they're making off Sonic, not the characters, and definitely not the fans.

Pretty sure.  I have turned up nothing that says she's property of Archie's.  Usually when you look up intellectual property like that you see characters' belonging to which company.  I could find nothing that said she belonged to Archie's.  Also, IF, she did belong to Archie's and the company have been looking to distance themselves from the Sonic brand, why would they hold onto the rights of a character that is part of the extended Sonic brand that they no longer want any part of?  Even in interviews, Ian Flynn had explicitly stated that everything from the comic was licensed under Sega, because they had the final say at the end of the day.

Furthermore, if you look up her counterpart from the UK Sonic Comic from the early 90's, she is mentioned by name.  Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Fleetway would not be able to use her name if Sega didn't own the rights to her name.

Merely using Occam's razor.  The most logical answer is most likely the correct one.

ok

i would add, they could just forget about the characters and don't have too give them, that does happen sadly

Sally in the fleetway comics, is just a squirrel with a bow called Sally, it never said Acorn, and i know it's meant to be her, it's just Easter egg that no one got till Sat AM came

this is not saying you're wrong, as i do believe you're right now, I'm just not very good at writing, sorry it looks like I'm arguing

you're right that does happen.

It did say Acorn, because Tails addresses her by name in Issue 3 where her Brother, Tuffty, had gone missing with an old pair of Sonic's power boots.  And in Issue 33, she was a Newcaster which was at the start of Knuckles' introduction to the comic.

Dude, don't worry.  It's all good.
