Half Moon. Faithful Half Moon. Waiting in the mountains and ruling over cats before she's even old enough to have been a sharpclaw. Taking on a role that has no precedence. All on the word of the one she loved, the one that sent her there in the first place, the one that gave her the title. Waiting to the end of her life and beyond to see Jay's Wing again. Never again loving, never abandoning her post, never even thinking to question his word.

Seriously, screw Jayfeather. Coulda sent the cat he loved and the dozens of other cats with her to the forest he knew would house them for at least another 100 years. Coulda let them stay by the lake. But no, based on the word of Rock he sent them to the mountains, knowing full well the hardships that would meet them there. Mountain lions. Eagles. Coldness and famine.

From a scale 1-10, I give this picture a 10! I just love how you put the cat screaming in the background, and the white cat itself on like a snowy hill. Very beautiful if you ask me, and have you suggested becoming a real artist, because to me, you would be a professional. The only thing I thought was weird was like the background, next time maybe you could add some more things, like trees. Other than that this picture is beautiful -gives applause- Please! keep up the work, for you are a good artist, in my book anyways.

I know that this isn’t your point, but there were already cats living in the forest, and within a generation or two most of those tribe cats couldn’t imagine leaving. THere was something Rock said about the Tribe having lived in the mountains before and leaving, but always coming back.

Yeah, and some of the Tribe cats go to the forest anyway. If anything sending the entire group of ancients there would have saved drama that's currently going on. It's clear in The Sun Trail that the forest is considered a paradise compared to the mountains. And yeah, some cats could not imagine leaving, but that has more to do with xenophobia and age than anything else.

Beautiful ^^ Yeah, thanks to Rock and his stupid talking about everyone's destiny, Half Moon and the rest of the the tribe had to suffer many predators, and the harsh climate of the mountains. That's not a place fit for them to live in.

Also, unrelated to our ongoing debate, the image is really good. Your lines are amazing, the colours, the expression. I love what appears to me to be an illusion of wind, and her memory(?) of Jay's Wing. You truly are quite talented. ^^

If he hadn't sent them to the Mountains, there would be no Tribe to help the fleeing Clans later. If the Tribe didn't exist, the Clans would have died in the Mountains, and there would then be no Jayfeather. It's a big, giant, vicious circle. You see it with time travel all the time. Well, not all the time, but enough.

Or, since most of the Tribe became the Clans, Jayfeather sending them tot he forest could have skipped the suffering step. Or leaving them by the lake could have skipped several steps.

Yeah, leaving the Lake was a strange thing to do, although apparently only that particular Tribe-Clan left. I recall them mentioning there being three groups, so I assume the other two groups ended up like the original Skyclan-gorge group, finally giving up and dispersing/dying out.

I still say that if they had skipped the Tribes at all, then the Tribe wouldn't have existed and they wouldn't have been able to help the Clans in Dawn when the Clans were freezing, starving, and exhausted during the trek through the Mountains. So, they needed the Tribe there.

But if he'd left the Ancients at the lake to begin with, the Clans never have to have gone through the mountains at all. I won't say more since I've revealed enough spoilers already.

Spoilers for everyone else, perhaps. All I can say about the Ancients, is that essentially, Jayfeather knew they would become the Tribe, so he made sure they did, in doing so perpetuating the circle.

Okay, look at it this way.

In Moonrise, the travelling cats had two choices. Go over the mountains, or go back the same way they came. They had no need to pass over the mountains, and I'm willing to bet the Clans could have gone around as well. Or Rock could have just told Jayfeather that the majority of the cats that made up the first Clan were the ancient Tribe and left them by the lake and just skipped a bunch of unneeded steps. This would probably mean the three would never exist, but according to Rock it's the existence of the three that caused the DF to rise up in the first place.

And on that note, what happened to Jay's Wing? When Jayfeather takes over his body he has none of Jay's Wing's memories or thought patterns. He doesn't recognize Jay's Wing's sister, father, or friends. And since Half Moon already had such a strong attraction to Jay's Wing, I'm willing to bet they'd been developing a relationship prior to this. Jayfeather traipsing about through the past killed the actual cat Half Moon fell in love with! It's not like Dove's Wing or Lion's Roar have personalities and thought patterns or pasts identical to Dovewing and Lionblaze. Jay's Wing probably had an entire life that got tossed aside by Jayfeather and Rock. This entire debacle was nothing but cruel to Half Moon.

((I really like this debate. I haven't had a good debate in a while))

If the cats stayed by the Lake there would never have been a Fireheart, for one, let alone anything that followed. And if there wasn't a Jayfeather, he wouldn't have been able to go back as Jay's Wing to tell them to go/stay. But if they stayed by the Lake, they would have eventually died out or dispersed along with the other two Lake Tribes, so it was actually better in the long run for the cats as a group to go through everything. Hardship is what made them what we know and love about them.

And, from what I gathered, Jay's Wing and Jayfeather were literally the same cat...sort of? It was certainly confusing, but from what I gathered, Jay's Wing was born, grew up, went through the Tunnels...and got lost for days (or was it longer? I can't remember the actual time). Something happened, and his spirit shot forward into Jayfeather, which caused the memory loss because his old life had to give way for his new. Then when Jayfeather went back into the Tunnels, he re-emerged in the past as Jay's Wing. It's like, somewhere in those Tunnels is a temporal anomaly which caused the original Jay's Wing to end up as Jayfeather, and vice-versa.

I do agree it was cruel to Half Moon, though. And yet, she still had an attraction to the new Jay's Wing, and grew to love him as well. Perhaps even more? And Jayfeather loved her in return, but he was a Medicine Cat. He had the same chance as Leafpool, and made the same decision. He chose for himself to suffer rather than cause his Clan, and the Clans as a whole, to suffer. And it has been shown that Half Moon can be in Starclan, and I firmly believe she waits for him there.

Those other two Tribes you're talking about are from Secrets of the Clans, a book that has been repeatedly debunked by newer books, and a book Vicky herself has said is no longer accurate. And since no mention of two other groups at the lake has appeared and they were only mentioned as having existed in Rock's time, which was apparently at the beginning of time itself, it has no relevance to the Ancients we're talking about here.

I theorize that, had the group stayed by the lake in the first place and the Clans formed there, since the Clans did form through StarClan intervention and therefore the location had little to do with anything, there would be no need for Fireheart, since he was needed in the first place to stop Tigerclaw, who became who he was when he killed Redtail and started hating kittypets largely because of his daddy issues, and he would have his daddy issues if Jake hadn't encouraged Pinestar to leave in the first place, and since there are barely any twolegs around the lake anyway. And since, again, according to Rock it was the existence of the Three that caused the DF to form an army in the first place, it would have made the most sense to have simply had Jayfeather encourage the cats to stay by the lake, maybe even encourage them to form groups. Jayfeather could have altered history himself if he'd really given a damn about Half Moon. The series probably would have been more interesting that way, to say the least.

But yeah Half-Moon is awesome

It's better to die quickly than to suffer the rest of your life. And, yeah, he knew they would live, but he also knew that the Twolegs weren't really going to take over the entire lake and that there was another forest they could have easily gone to.

What brought this on for me was, in The Sun Trail, Half Moon tells a mother with a dying kit not to let the kit see her hurt and upset as it dies, to put on a strong, brave face to comfort the dying baby. And I can't help but think that Half Moon knows this from experience. Which is why I depicted her here as such, calm and strong on the surface but wailing in grief inside.
