Going to the Party by shelleysupernova Going to the Party by shelleysupernova
Portrait of my daughter in her party frock. The dress was a real challenge to draw because of all the folds of the fabric but I enjoyed doing it!
Faber-Castell Pencils and pure graphite on A3 Bristol Smooth.

Lovely job, Shelley, the fabric and the hair are perfect. I can almost hear her asking a question :)

Thank you. Yes I really spent time on the hair as I have always found this the most difficult part of a portrait. I think this is my best attempt to date :-)

I love drawing hair but I too find it a challenge - you drew it to perfection though! :-) :-)

Aw thank you Lonny. I am really pleased with my progress. I have been determined to improve my pencil skills (hopefully to become as good as you at some point) and I think this is my best piece to date. I feel I have really turned a corner with drawing hair. I bought an eraser pencil recently and it is superb for drawing in ultra fine highlights. It's such a simple tool but makes a huge difference!

WOW - are you kidding me!?! Your stuff is beyond WOW!! :D

Those pencil eraser thingies are definitely worth using - I buy the pentels (at WalMart) and sharpen them in a hand held sharpener to get a point ... works pretty well for hair and highlights.

Thank you, but you are too kind! I have long way to go with the pencil. My biggest problem is simply that I rush things. Patience has never been my strong point!

Yes I am starting to really find out what tricks of the trade work for me. As well as the pencil eraser I would not be without my blending stumps. I also recently purchased a magnifying glass which is useful for refining tiny areas of detail.

I was thinking about a magnifying glass - it might be helpful - let me know how it works for you (and how you hold it while you are working).

Yes it is actually more tricky than I thought but I tend to only use for the very small areas such as eyes and mouth. I have been simply holding it in one hand and drawing with the other. It is also useful for scanning the whole picture so you can spot any errors and then rework them.
