I keep the character as a character and make a new "fursona" that more represents myself and who I am now. I like to think of all my fursonas from over the years living together in a big house, as a family. And they're all the ages that I was when I first made them. Clearly my most recent fursona is the more mature one hhahahahha. I hope that it means that someday I'll have a cranky old lady fursona with a housefull of young whippersnappers who don't know how good they have it hahahahahah

I agree with a lot of the people here in that the old fursona design could be used as a different form or a different character/mascot. That way you still have the design on hand, and can use it as inspiration for a new fursona or design.

As for me, I've had some musings on whether I should make a "natural" palette version of my mascot character (like changing bright chartreuse green to a mint+grey or something more earthy), but nothing like a complete redesign. I still like how the character looks, and it was never meant to be my persona anyway. (I have other plans for that, haha.)

Nyliir will always be a special character to me, but it’s safe to say I outgrew her. I thought of redesigning her but I ended up just making a new sona all together (it wasnt even intentional haha).
I have multiple OCs that I draw to represent different things, which I think can also be helpful since you don’t rely on a single design when you need to express some kind of feeling.

This happened to me a few years ago! I changed her story and redesigned her!

I didn't have much trouble rewriting her story, but I really struggled with her redesign. I played around with it for close to a year and I think I went through four or five different redesigns with a ton of minor redesigns in between those. I liked all her redesigns, but they just didn't feel right, so I would ask myself what I didn't like and then just kept tweaking her till I was finally happy in the end. Took awhile, but I got there eventually and now she's perfect for me!

En refaire un complet ça aide parfois !! Tu peux aussi reprendre un personnage que tu aimes beaucoup et en faire ton fursona, ça peut marcher ouo

I asked myself, what about my fursona doesnt fit me anymore. What do I see when I look at her that doesnt fit me.
And if I figure it out, I fix it.

If I dont, we just sit a a standoff for a very long time till things work out again :'D

I created a new fursona after I had let my old fursona evolve into something ridiculous during my relationship. Now I love my fursona and she represents only me.

I literally just dealt with this
I held a design contest with my watchers so they can redesign my sona or completely design a new one

Though i didn't keep the winners, they helped me come up with a design i absolutely love.

If this didn't work, i probably would've bought a new design to have as my sona

I've honestly been through 3 former "fursonas" in total. I'll redesign one slightly, and if it's completely unlike me or I dislike drawing it anymore I'll design/buy a new one that's closer to my interests.
I started of with a furred western dragon named Dask. Then made a "sparkledog/scenedog" 'sona when that fad started(soo many years agoo) - I still have him and a plush of him, but that's kinda just 'there' in my closet - don't feel anything or connection toward the character itself anymore. Third was a colorful wolf-dragon hybrid 'Nathika' that shared my usernames and etc. She was kind of short-lived as the main reason for changing again was I couldn't draw her, thus started not to feel anything toward her.

Currently re-using the name Dask(this name had such a history with me) for my current fursona that's I've been using since 2008/'11. She's has slight redesign since but I love to draw her and all the such now. She's the burgundy creature that's currently my icon.

Good topic to talk about.
Depends what are you ok with.
For me is very difficult because I still like stuff that I also used to like years ago and I feel like returning to them.

I did noticed the other suggestions earlier than me but I got a bit more of a twist to the same suggestion.
I used to have a character that I used to get separated from but I went to a total different path with them than intended.
Basically I took new inspiration sources (the most recent ones) and I grew the character small piece by small piece to a very complicated one and their backstory is basically their evolutionary line visually speaking.
From a fully black, rebel, smoking chara to another that is generally pro-life, kind, almost Jesus-like, with flowers and tries to kill is destructive side.
Just try to work something out slowly. It takes a while (at least for me it did and still does.)

a lot of the time I found that what no longer clicked with me were specific motifs incorporated into the 'sona.

like when i was a lil shit in high school i used crowns a lot bc i craved control over my life and whatnot, and as i realized that concept of Complete Control was a fiction i grew into a new motif that better represented where i was in my life at that time.

the fursona design as a whole has shifted a lot to, just as aesthetics and whatnot change, but it was the little things like replacing a crown with horns and horns to halos that helped the design feel more like "me" again.

I ended up letting my old sona become their own character. I have a new sona now whom I adore, but I also have alt sonas/mascots.

I don’t want to change it too much or i lose my brand but I don’t feel connected to it anymore :/ idk what to do

I swapped it out! Most of my old sonas are retired but my most recent (Lappazol) I still have and they’ve been my sona since.. 2014? But I also have a few different sonas and sorta jump back and forth depending on my mood and stuff,,

this happened with me, so I pretty much scrapped her and started fresh in terms of design! His back story remained similar, but otherwise she went from this to this. And now I'm much happier with her c:

i had this happen! i made the old fursona into a character & created a new one from scratch.
Anipul Featured By Owner Jan 29, 2018
I had a LOT of trouble with my fursona at first and I just decided to make her an OC and I created a completely different fursona. I based her on myself this time and even used my haircolor as the main fur and I feel so much more conected to her now? Like I can look at her and say: yep! that's my fursona!
CloverCoin Featured By Owner Jan 29, 2018  Professional Digital Artist
Make a new one and tentatively feel them out until I found something that fit. Now I found AJ ferret in like.. 2012 and she's very much just been a natural second skin/persona who ages well with me. Couldn't be happier! Before that though it was all hiccups and second-guessing "do I really like this version of myself?" kinda crap.
Herboreal Featured By Owner Jan 29, 2018
I made a new form for her. My sona was an american badger and now shes a pomeranian. I still have the alt form and keep all the artwork up and all.. but yeah! New form :>
