IRDH by Shastro IRDH by Shastro
I made this while messing around with new lighting set ups for the AtN fanart Image!

HDRI's are so much fun.

Okay, so I'm familiar with HDR, but what's an HDRi?  I've heard about them for skymaps and I assume their panoramic (all that I've seen are).

HDR is the same thing as HDRI, HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and HDRI stands for High Dynamic Range Image, it is just another abbreviation for the same thing.

HDRs are 360 degree environment images, used for realistic lighting of CG scenes.

Oh man I use here in almost every image I make, they are great for getting interesting reflections I metallic materials, and they can easily provide interesting and awesome lighting, for outdoor scenes they are a must, indoor they might not always be as helpful

I use equirectangular of course, but not HDRs. I've just never taken the extra time to find any I like in that format, they're in short enough supply in high res as it is sadly :( let alone making it 1 format to choose out of.

Do you have a certain sight you use to find good ones? I'm waiting for Andrew Price to finish his texture website at this point.

There are a couple good free hdri websites, just do a google search and see what you can find, but make sure they are safe sites.

cause haxs be bitch!

I'm going to have to paint my next background, so wish me luck there. I envy straight up 2D sometimes, ok about 90% of the time ;P 3D is next to impossible to get just right with a single reference image.

2D and 3D both have their challenges, but 2D definitely does not suffer from using one reference as much as 3d does :P

HAXZ!

For me I struggle in 2D because I can't draw curves worth a damn, but at the same time sometimes I'll get too ambitious towards a complex 3D scene and it will drive me to the cusp of an artist block. AKA Fluttershy's house is detailed to the gills in season 5

Re-creating a scene like fluttershy's cottage would be a challenge for any 3D artist, especially if going for realism.

That HDRI though. A little blown out on the right, but it looks cool.

Its a very nice HDRI, its probably a little too bright on the right, but it was more of a test than something I would call art.
