It actually wasn't too bad for the renders, but then again I'm used to 16 hour renders, so whats short to me might be long to others :]

question, what hardware do you have to render on?

I use my laptop, which is a Lenovo Y50, with 8 Gigs of Ram, and Nvidia GTX 860m, and a I7 2.4-3.4 Ghz CPU

I used GPU for this render, and I try to use GPU rendering as much as possible since its so much faster, but because most of my render's use particle hair (sometimes more than 150,000) my poor little GPU gives out on me, so usually I use CPU which is the cause of the long render time. Sometimes my render's even exceed my computer's entire RAM pool then I have to separate the scene into render layers (like in the case of The Blender Pony Artists Tribute Image Thingie) I had to separate Lyra and her hair onto a different render layer so that my computer could avoid totally crashing.

i see. makes sense. i have a desktop GTX 760. i would love to use it 100% of the time, but a few of the reacent renders (for work) are exceeding the memory buffer and crashing the GPU driver, and blender. so i have had to use my CPU (I7 3770K) and it takes a little while.

Nice mesh!  What did you start with for the plates? A sphere?  A SS'd cube?  It's so clean!!

I started off with a plane, and built the surface shape, then extruded inwards to give depth.
