AtN Fan Art [HEAVY WIP] - 1 by Shastro AtN Fan Art [HEAVY WIP] - 1 by Shastro
Hallo!

This is part of something I'm working on to take a break from major large projects, and I wanted to try out new things :)

speaking of new things, this is the first Image I've ever made using PARTICLE HAIR EYELASHES! I will be using them from now on.

2D drawing is from the AtN comic and was drawn by TerminusLucis

This was mostly made during stream.

Render Information:
-
This took about 45 minutes? on a 2.4 ghz i7 at 250 samples I believe

Plans for next version:
-
Get the hair finished and ready, start the shading process of the pillow (also make its shape look like a pillow) and build up the coffin, I got some cool ideas for it.

Feedback is welcome and I hope you enjoyed :)

Stay Awesome!

Very nice, like the particle hair, very realistic. I can't tell that the eyelashes are particles, but they look awesome! Looks just like the picture, all you'd have to do to make it a perfect match is give the hair two materials, put a black sweater on her and place a ross in your hands. (Of course, whether you want to do all that is entirely up to you. Looks awesome in 3D, you really should recreate some scenes and build a 3D short film based on the comic! Keep up the great work, can't wait to see the finished product!

Thank You! The eyelashes are quite hard to distinguish, but if you zoom real close you can see that there are some extra lines that wouldn't come from a solid mesh.

I definitely plan on working more on the scene, adding the coffin, the clothes, and the rose.

I would love to build a short film! but I don't have the resources, and there are technical complications.

Lets just hope everything goes as planed!

Thanks Again!

Dang!  That's lookin' real!  I've always though that their body would pose a threat to photorealism as it's just a flat color, but that looks great!

Thanks Again JetPowerFIE! Realism isn't always a good thing with cartoon horses, but I'm going to try to get as realistic as possible without making it look weird.

Not enough realism can look cheap, but too much can be awkward if trying to look like too advanced.  I say take the Pixar route: keep cartoon models, but make EVERYTHING else photorealistic.

Yep finding the balance between realistic and non realistic is always hard, many renders sink into the Uncanny valley. I'll be keeping the hair realistic, and everything else, but the skin probably not so much.

Sounds like a good plan.  Just study Pixar.  They've got it down pat.

You know the Catmull-Clark subdivision was invented by Pixar's head mathematician?

Yep, Pixar's teh Bomba!

and No I didn't! NEWFOUND KNOWLEDGE AND RESPECT! I have no idea how anyone would do anything without subsurf.

that guy needs more than a pat on the back :)

Oh, considering about all subsurf to my knowledge uses that principle, I'm sure he got more than just a pat on the back ;)

And I was watching Bug's Life and thought, here's a perfect example how to do ponies!  The characters are NOT photorealistic by any means but the ground the grass, the shadows, even the sky are all very realistic.  Look at the humans on WALL-E.  Same deal.  I think there's ya plenty of reference!

Yepperz! REFERENCES!

I think I'll just experiment with it and formulate my own style that works, Pixar is great and my stuff will probably be similar, but I don't wonna limit myself to their formula (despite how well it works)

Though I'll be careful to avoid the Uncanny valley

CREATIVITY MUST FLOW WITH NO LIMITS!

It looks great. But you wanna know something? That was actually suppose to show the hooves crossed on her chest like a normal corpse would be and the flower on the hooves. Gray kind of did it like that, but I didn't mind so I left it. I don't' know if you want to do it like in the comic or like how it was originally suppose to be, but it's you choice. Thanks for making it.

Hmm there are are a few technical problems with changing the pose, because of the way I have set it up the rig will no longer move the character, but it's still an option, although I hope you don't mind and change up the image a bit, as in I might take quite a bit of creative freedom as I have quite a few ideas brewing in my head regarding the coffin, the lighting, and various other things. This is intended to be more of a creative re-creation of that scene with my own things :)

Also it's my pleasure, it's rare to get a comment from someone so awesome and ingenious, thanks for the comment.

Thank You! I'm happy that you like the lighting, since it wasn't really made for any other purpose than to test the hair.

Thank You! I think I'll either re-size the horn or modify it to incorporate the physical grooves in the horn.

I'm glad you like the eyelashes, they are quite the experiment.

I'd say the biggest downer for the horn for me is the material being so much darker than the rest of the body, and that it's widest in the middle not the base. But more texture is always fun, if you want a cool looking bumpmap for unicorn horns I can send you 1, basically it stretches a noise node around the horn so it looks like it has small natural growth rings.

As for the eyelashes, it's always the best when an experiment ends up being a fixed part of your workflow :D

Yeah, It was actually just the SFM horn, but I've already changed it quite a bit now,

Thank you for the groove tip I'll definitely use it next time.

I agree :)

Thanks Again Destro

It'll be great seeing what you end up making, everyone's got great idea's of how a unicorn horn should be and I like to see them all /)
