Airplane [WIP 3]- Details (Click to Zoom in) by Shastro Airplane [WIP 3]- Details (Click to Zoom in) by Shastro
I think that my plane is basically finished, except for a few last remaining problems, but I think this is going to be the last [WIP], the next time you see this plane, it'll be in a finished image, with a proper title, backround.etc  I have two idea for it and I plan to make both, The first one I'll make will have the plane in a dusty shack, on the apple farm, applejack will be sitting inside, looking curious, and the title could be "Could I fly?" or something similar, tell me if you have a good idea.  The Second will be in a battle scenario, with flames, smoke physics, bullets shattering glass.

I might make a proper aviation helmet along with the plane.

Don't worry about the Pixelation in some areas, this is not a high quality render.

Made with Blender and Photoshop.

Changes Since Previous Version:
-
All kinda of new models levers, and shaders to the cockpit.
- Added Pinkie on a string (Still not sure how much I like it though)
- Changed Exterior Body Shader (It looked bad up close)

Plans for Next Version:
Fix remaining problems, and make a full image with it

Render Information:
First Took 4 hours to render, Second 3 hours to render, Third 40 minutes to render
- All rendered in Cycles with 500 Samples on an 2.4 ghz i7

Lots of fun making this, and as always Critique is welcome, tell me what looks good, and what doesn't.

AND DON'T FORGET TO STAY AWESOME!

Wow, this is beautiful!
(Sorry if I repeat myself or anything here, I'm very tired and still wanted to comment now because I'm not sure how free I am to be on my laptop for the rest of the day.)

The new body shader is stunning and I'm glad we get to see all the new additions in this preview. The little personal touches like the photo and the toy Pinkie give it a nice touch of personality without sacrificing the overall "clean" feeling inside the cockpit. And the idea of AJ flying is interesting. I would think that Twilight, being the intellectual type that she is, would be the most qualified; but there isn't a whole lot of point in an alicorn flying a small aircraft if they can just fly I suppose, So AJ seems like the next best choice.

You've been making some great choices and placement and design, and it's looking fantastic. Can't wait to see it in action!;)

Thanks so much (as always)

The idea with AJ is that she's exploring some hidden parts of her ranch, and there she finds a small shack, upon pushing the door open she finds buried amongs the junk a strange broken down device (the airplane) This would be very strange to her since (as far as I know) there are no flying machines besides balloons in equestria. There will be a hole in the roof with a beam of light shining on the plane (which will be rusted, dusty, tires flat, dents, cracked glass). The floor will be dirt with patches of plants here and there, various junk will be around.

This might take a couple months to make, but the idea I have for it is too good to not make.

Lets just hope I can pull it off ;_; I'm already overwhelmed.

Wow the instrument panel is looking AMAZING!! If you're going for more photo realistic I'd add a few more bump maps and get some cracks in those tires and ease off the strength of the current bump of the wheel walls. Possibly a few scratches on the panel, I know I used an overscaled noise texture and a VERY simple auto UV unwrap with a color ramp to fix the width of the scratch, I used the technique to add the scratches to my octavia cello I could send you a picture of the node setup if you want to know what I mean. Either way coming along great, I think your idea of putting it in the barn is great, might need a grungy old canvas to have hanging off a wing and some dust effects to really sell it ;P

Thanks for the advice dpplad!

I plan on adding more realism when I make that Applejack image and my idea for it has grown exponentially, and will take up the next few months of my time, I'm going to make the plane completely run down, dents in the body, scratches on the dents and in other places, the tires flat, dust and rust everywhere, going to make a large tear in one of the seats and have the stuffing leaking out. The barn/ shack will be run down as well with rusty grungy paint cans, boxes and other rusted parts lying around in the dirt, the ceiling will be a metal sheet material, with a big hole in the roof that will shine light onto the plane. I'll give Applejack particle hair as always, and the dirt floor will have plants growing in spots.

I'm going to add atmospheric effects to sell the dust in the air.

That Image will be called "Amongst the Junk"

As for that node set up I sure wouldn't mind a screenshot, any bit of knowlege will come in handy.

Hopefully I can pull it off, but before I start on that, The final render of the blender artist image is rendering right now, so when its done, if I like it, I'll be posting it shortly.

Wow you sure do have your work set out then!! O_O

I decided just to give you a file you can append in and play with since I used a massive amount of grouped nodes, here sta.sh/0mqzkusk4ge

It worked well on the cello I'm sure you'll find some use, it includes a procedural wood texture you can play with too, for metal just replace the wood node of course. I'm thinking if you want something more exact use a UVmapped texture image instead of the procedural noise scratches, if you go far enough back in the node group tree it will all set itself up with bumps and everything, I'm sure you'll want to play with a few of the color ramps to really get it perfect. Anyway it's kinda like a sandbox. GL with all your projects, I'm dropping a personal project I had going for a while now since it would take waaaay too long for the amount of detail I'd want, plus it's gone astray. So hopefully you'll start seeing some more work from me soon, if you want any other materials made or something I'd be glad to give it a go until I remember another project.

Thanks for the usefull .Blend I'll have to check it out sounds like I could learn more than a thing or two :)

I think that'll work great for most of the scratches, but since I plan to add dents and such, I'll add a second layer to have more scratches in areas with dents.

I hope to see more from you, You're very talented!

For big dents obviously use a displacement modifier, but if you just want dings I'd add it to the the bump as an add math node into the height input or use some vector math with 2 separate bump nodes. Good thing this time it wasn't a massive download to get a peak :)

Yeah I'm way over my limit so a massive download wouldn't have been good :)

But I think I was going to sculpt/ model the damage to the vehicle. Seems easier and more control that way (at least for large dents)

I prefer using a displacement modifier for that since you can just paint in new scratches or other features without having extra polygons to edit if you find later you need to change something. Unless you're going to have the plates of the plane skin hang over a hole with detailed features there's not really a reason to make more trouble for future changes. And I remembered your limit and was really glad when it turned out being a small download.
