Fellow Artists Beware!  I was tipped off by another artist that my 'Hydrangea' Fae was copied as an ACEO and sold on eBay.  The eBay seller is 'pollyart1'.  I've already reported her to eBay and her listing has been removed, but not after she made about $34 off my art.  I noticed that she's ripping off other artists as well.  Please visit her site and if you recognize other artists' work, please let them know so they can take action.

She's still has my Hydrangea Fae posted on her website www.ebsqart.com/Art-Shows/Exhi…; I sent her the below email explaining that what she is doing is wrong.  Hope I wasn't too hard on her, but I really want her to learn.

*****************************

Dear Ms. Polly Ford,

You claim to be an artist.  As one artist to another, you know how difficult it is to come up with an original idea and composition, and to execute it through hard practiced skill to come up with a final image.  That said, I cannot express my profound dismay that you copied my 'Hydrangea Fae' and not only posted your 'copy' as your own work, but entered it in a contest and sold the ACEO.  Let me explain something to you, ALL of my art is ORIGINAL AND COPYRIGHTED.  Most of the images you find on the internet are protected under copyright laws.  You know what that means, it means that what you did was illegal.  You cannot profit off of other peoples copyrighted material.  You cannot surf the web and just copy what you find and pass it off as your own work.  It's NOT YOUR WORK!  I noticed that I'm not the only artist that you've STOLEN FROM.

I have already reported you to eBay.  I've posted your website on my fb Page to warn others of your deceptive practices.  I've warned my circle of fantasy artists to keep an eye on you to make sure that they don't see you selling other artists' work.  Please understand that I'm not attacking you personally.  We artists have a hard enough time scraping a living off of our hard work.  For you to come along and profit by copying our work is illegal and quite frankly, unethical.

If you want to be a TRUE artist, practice and work very hard on your OWN original ideas.  Please stop copying off of the rest of us.  I am more than happy to offer you guidance on honing your own skills to create your own truly unique art, but you can't copy my (or other artists') work.  It just dishonest and wrong.

I really hope you understand this.  Please remove the Hydrangea Flower Fairy from your website, facebook page and any other site you have this posted.  If you don't remove it, I will be forced to report you on these other sites as I reported you on eBay.  I don't mean to be a jerk, just protecting my copyrighted property.  I suggest that you research copyright laws and art theft if you still don't understand what I'm tell you.

ACen Artist Alley

Journal Entry: Sun May 29, 2011, 2:02 PM

Survived my first Artist Alley at ACen in Rosemont, IL.  Met some really great artists, which was awesome.  I now have to catch up on deviantart (again), since the prep for this show took some serious work.  I was also able to finish a small painting I started a month ago and have start a new one. :)

Thanks to all who have stopped by and faved, commented or watch.  I'll will make it to your pages as I go through my messages (patience again).  I appreciate the support!

I now have a Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/ShannonValent…
If you like my work, please consider liking my new Page.  I'll be posting WIP's, new art and show schedules via my fb Page.

I also opened a shop in Etsy to sell my art and goodies: www.ShannonValentine.etsy.com

The shop took up many weeks to launch and my dA account has suffered.  I've already made some progress going through months worth of deviations and will be busy catching up for some time.  Please be patient with me.  :)

Thanks

Thanks you soooo much for all your comments and support!!!    I've been neglecting my deviant account for several weeks and my inbox is full!  The last two weeks have brought me bad luck.  I'm trying to focus on the positive and ride this wave out.

CSS

I would like a new CSS – something customized – and I'm willing to hire someone to do it.  Is anyone interest?  Payment can be made through either an art trade, membership gift or cold, hard cash.  If you're interested, please note me.  :)

ATC's and Stuff

Artist Trading Cards

I just found a group in my area that meets once a month to trade artist’s cards.  Has anybody traded over dA or outside of dA?  I’ve noticed that some are sold on eBay, but thought that defeated the purpose of the cards.  I’ve been busy producing some and find them to be quick and fun.  So, who’s trading out there?

Up Next

Works in the works:

➢ “Afternoon with Briar Rose”
➢ “Draped” Fairy
➢ Final Fantasy VII CC fan art (this one involving Zack)
➢ ATC’s
➢ Chester*

* A character based off of :iconkarlynoelleabreu: Clocktown series.  If you haven’t read it, please do.  It’s amazingly good as are the rest of her stories.

Small Stuff

Journal Entry: Sun Mar 1, 2009, 2:14 PM

Small-ish

I’m going to be working small for a bit.  Small paintings and drawings.  I haven’t the energy for bigger right now.  And I would like a larger scanner, because my present one leaves shadows when scanning anything larger than 5x7.  Never behaved like that before – maybe time to replace.  I feel drained anyway.  I’m glad spring will be here soon.

Thanks???

See my poll.  I usually try to thank or return comments when someone takes the time to view my work, but it’s near impossible.  I’m wondering if it is an annoying habit anyway.  At any rate, I really do greatly appreciate the support and try to return it whenever possible.

:floating:

Thanks again for visiting!  You make me smile and want to work harder.

Devious Journal Entry

I don’t know why I feel I even need to post these.  I don’t really have anything that interesting to report.  But, it’s been months since I updated my journal, so…

….

Nope – I got nothing.

Thank You!

No…wait… I do want to thank my dear friend, Patty, for the year subscription.  That was too kind!  *Many big hugs*  Her gallery can be found here:

Art Class

No…wait… again…

Why does it seem like art classes are only available during the week day.  I work days, dang it!  I’ve been looking into taking classes for the last year and a half – haven’t had ANY luck finding one that will fit my schedule.  Geez…

So I guess I did have something to say.

DD's, Rant, Cleaning and Stamps

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 20, 2008, 5:13 PM

Daily Deviations

OK – I know I tend to over-analyze … a lot.  But I’ve come across several outstanding galleries that (I feel) are not getting the dev-love they deserve.  So, I’m inclined to suggest a few DD’s.  However, I feel that, as a courtesy to the artist, I should ask if they mind if I suggested one of their pieces.  It’s along the lines of featuring someone’s art in your journal and dropping the artist a note to let them know.  Is this a good idea?

DD’s are a great way to get traffic in your gallery, but sometimes it can be like opening the floodgates.  So, I was wondering if there was some kind of etiquette that exists for this sort of thing.

Has anyone ever suggested a DD that was accepted?  Is it more thrilling to be surprised by logging into your account and having a ka-zillion messages?  Or is it better to know before hand, but risk having the knowledge that the DD suggestion was not accepted?

Short Rant

Here it comes…. :shakefist:

OK - I’m so frick’n sick of coming across fan art on dA that so OBVIOUSLY CAME FROM A FRICK’N COLORING PAGE, MOVIE STILL OR RIPPED FROM ANOTHER ARTIST!!!.  If the line art is not yours, you need to state that in your description and reference your sources.   I know… this would be an admission that you didn’t draw something and you probably won’t get the praise you’re after.  But, if you traced or scanned in someone else’s line work, it’s not YOUR WORK!  C’mon people!  If you want to be a good artist, you need to practice drawing!  If you just want to be popular on the web, open a MySpace Page.  Stop ripping off  other people’s work, you lazy, deceitful jerks!

*pant, pant … End of rant*

Cleaning House

I’ve decided to remove some older art in my gallery and move other pieces into scraps.  I’m in the process of really thinking about where my art is going and feel that I need to clear the clutter.   I really appreciate the feedback and faves that I received on these pieces, but I feel it’s time to remove them.  I just felt this gallery needed to be a bit more focused and I really wanted to get rid of the pieces that I never felt good about.

Some Whining ... Sorry

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 8, 2008, 4:45 PM

Corporate Kills Art

At least it did for me – for an entire month.  Work kept me very busy.  That, and the fact that this winter has been the worst in memory for me.  Long hours at work coupled with 2+ hour commutes (one way, folks), pretty much sucked.  I did work on some scroll assignments for court (SCA), but other than that, I did little art.  I have works that I started a month ago just collecting dust.  Now I feel rusty. :(

Spring Ahead

I just read that daylight savings actually increases utility costs.  I hate, hate, hate, having to adjust to daylight savings.  What is the freak’n point of it, really?  At least there’ll be some daylight left when I return from work on Monday.

Set Goals, Give Thanks

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 2, 2008, 10:05 AM

Goals for 2008

Nothing like setting goals for the new year.  I was tagged by :iconpatty-space: so here it goes ...

THE RULES
1. Copy this in your journal.
2. Write at least 5 things you'd like to do or achieve in next year and at least 3 things you would like to change or let go of. You can also write more.
3. Tag people who you'd like to do this

On the coming New Year I will:
:bulletpurple:  Prioritizing my time.  I need more structure (and sleep).  My job and compute suck up too much of my time, so it seems I need to make the time to pursue other things.  So…
:bulletpurple:  Set aside on night a week to do serious damage in my studio – Maybe try to complete one piece a month.
:bulletpurple: Set aside one weeknight to catch up on dA.
:bulletpurple: Set aside one weeknight to do research on future pieces.  And …
:bulletpurple: Get a sketch (or two, or three… ) in everyday.  Should keep me busy.
:bulletpurple:  Join the local art league.
:bulletpurple:  Practice patience

On the coming New Year I won't:
:bulletpurple:  Neglect my family or friends
:bulletpurple:  Take myself too seriously
:bulletpurple:  Skimp on sleep
:bulletpurple:  Spend too much money

I’m tagging anyone who reads this and finds that it may be helpful.
:rose:

Thank You!

It’s getting more and more difficult keeping up with my devwatchers and thanking those who have visited my gallery to fav, watch and comment.   So I’d like to thank everyone for your support, suggestions, encouragement and friendship.

Peace and inspiration in 2008!

Pondering Fan Art

Sat Nov 3, 2007, 11:59 AM

Fan Art – To Do or Not To Do ….

I can't escape it.  I know that I should be concentrating on original images, but fan art is just so [insert Goofy voice] gawsh-darn fun to create.  I seem to have an over abundance of ideas for fan art.  That's the problem.  It's easy because these characters already have such a rich and varied background in our history and popular culture.  They have imbedded themselves in my psyche and I love to show my interpretations of their stories.  However, I wonder if it's hindering my development as an artist.  In each of these drawings, I feel I'm furthering my abilities.  However, technique will improve with time and practice.  It's bending my mind to create my own unique world through art that I'm struggling with.  I need to discover other sources of inspiration other than what others have already created.  I know – inspiration is all around me, but translating that into an image that works both on a technical level and emotional one is a challenge.   Anyone else have this problem?

Anyway, earlier this year I decided that for every one fan-based image I create, I will create an original one.  So far, I've stuck to it but I'm thinking for 2008, I'll up it to 2 originals for 1 fan.

Short Hiatus

Sat Jun 30, 2007, 7:23 PM

I've already been away from dA for much longer than I wanted, but my personal and professional life got a bit crazy.  It doesn't look like I'll have much more free time this summer as I gear up for Pennsic War 36 in late July/early August.   I'll be spending most of my time outside of work sewing garb and getting my encampment ready.  That said, it is my hope that by late August things will start to slow down a bit, enabling me to become an active participant in this community again --- and start visiting and re-visiting galleries and post some new work (I do have ideas galore and have started several pieces already).

I just want to thank those of you who have been so supportive in your commenting, watching and/or faving.  I have a lot of catching up to do and hope to swing by all your galleries to get inspired or to just gawk.  :D

:butterflytwo: I freak'n love summer!  Hope everyone is enjoying theirs! :butterflytwo:

So Little Time

Sun Jan 21, 2007, 8:14 PM

I need to be able to work on less sleep.  I need to be able to live on less money.  I need to be able to work less hours.  And my commute time needs to be MUCH shorter.   In other words, I need more free time.  I've got a ton of ideas and have been working on getting those ideas on paper, but producing a finished product is becoming a bit difficult.  I'm getting frustrated.

But, my time constraints and life necessities are not about to change, so I just have to start managing my time better.  First, I've been making more of an effort to sign onto DA at least once a week to keep current and such.  And no matter how busy I am, I'm trying to work more in my sketchbook and practice my painting.  I'm also investing in better grade paper and pencils.  I also want to start taking advantage of the numerous tutorials available out there to sharpen my skills.

With that out of the way...

Fri May 26, 2006, 8:05 PM
I'm officially done with school!  I graduated with a Master in Science in CIS on May 6th.  Aside from work, the last three weeks have been spent packing for my move and catching up on sleep.  Quite frankly, I've been unmotivated to do much more.  But with homework out of the way, I'll have time to create more art, work on improving, and build a decent portfolio.  I would also like to have a good body of work available so I can earn some extra income by offering prints.

Now I have to spend a few days going through all the new deviants in my Watch and catch up on messages.  Sheesh….not good being offline for over 3 weeks.

OK, here I go…

I was tagged by ~hippyofdoom back in January.  I really have nothing to report, except that school, work and preparing to move into a new house is sucking all of my free time.  After two months, I finally managed to finish a picture, although it has problems.  Is it June yet???

Craziness Ahead

Fri Dec 30, 2005, 3:57 PM
Well, so long 2005.  Starting next week, life will be completely crazy again.  I've been off from work and school for the last week and a half, and it's been quite blissful.  I was able to create another drawing and spend lots and lots of time on it.

I'm done with classes, but will be working on my thesis for the next 4 months.  This should adequately suck up any free time, which will leave very little room for creativity here.  I've already started another drawing, and will probably work in the wee hours of the morning to get it done in a reasonable amount of time.

***************************

Thanks again all those who have taken the time to comment on my work.  Your encouragement keeps me going.  I'm hoping to see a marked improvement in my work within a year.  I'll keep plugging away at it.

Disney and Stuff

Wed Nov 23, 2005, 1:53 PM
First off, a BIG Thanks!!!!    to everyone who has offered comments on my art.  I really do try to return comments, but this place is huge and I get lost easily.  Besides, time really hates me.  I'm still making my rounds, though, and finding new galleries along the way.

**********

I just returned from WDW in Florida and stopped by The Art of Disney in Epcot.  Along with Limited Edition cels and Classics Collections were some original art done by various artists.  It was totally cool to see.  I saw one of Cruella De Vil cruising down a London street.  It was done in a very painterly style reminiscent of 60's cityscape art.  I couldn't afford to purchase it, but it was wonderful to see.  Had me thinking of possible future villain art.  ;)

The princess merchandise (including a good number of Christmas ornaments) were sadly uninspiring.  It made me sad because I love the princesses and was hoping to see something new to spend my hard-earned money on.  Nope.  It was the same 6 in their false "merchandise" colors, in the same static poses and generic expressions.  No hint of their personalities or style, although there were a couple Snow White's that were nicely reproduced.  So my Sleeping Beauty collection did not increase much even though she (or someone who somewhat looked like her :hmm:) was everywhere.

***********

I just received my first deviantArt purchase and was totally thrilled with the quality.  It was the Retro Girl Calendar offered by :icongoblinqueeen:  Obviously I loved the art, but the paper stock quality and print quality was great.  No complaints here.  Weeeee!!!!

***********

I slacked off for the last 2 weeks, but am back with pencil and brush in hand.  Hope to be submitting soon.  :D

Talent Watch!

Thu Oct 20, 2005, 6:27 PM
I've had some time to browse galleries during my lunch break and have added a few to my watch list.  Holy crap!  The talent! :faint:  I nearly fell off my chair viewing some of these galleries.

I had them displayed below.  I saw other deviant's do this and thought it was a great idea because it drew me into other galleries, which I probably wouldn't have found on my own.   Truly inspirational!  Well, it's back to work for me!  Enjoy!
