One Saturday morning, Lola Depardieu was rudely awoken by the sound of her cell phone ringing for the first time in three years. Lola was not a hermit by any means—she was a living, breathing, functioning member of society, she thought—but nobody ever rang her. Nobody. If a work colleague, a doctor, or even her own mother wanted to contact her for whatever reason, a text or email would suffice. That was just the way of the modern world, Lola thought, and she liked it that way.
Lola reached one skinny arm out from under her cosy blanket to silence the phone and promptly went back to sleep. She had no idea how early it was, and was too tired to check.
