My Bio
Hello, deviantART. My name's James. You may call me Jim. I am an aspiring photographer/writer currently living in Barcelona with my soon-to-be wife. I'm using dA to pimp my photography, see if I can't sell a few prints and generate some income this way. I'm still waiting...

In the meantime, I should probably let you know that I am not much of a people photographer. My subjects tend to be of architecture or landscapes, but I'm still developing my eye. Criticism, particularly of the constructive nature, is greatly appreciated.

My fascination with photography began in high school when, armed with a Vivitar point-and-shoot, I took a photography class. I loved it. Of course, back in those days everything was done on 35mm film, so things have changed (and I've probably dated myself), but I loved being able to develop my own film and photos and I liked going out to shoot.

My purpose, if I have one, is to show people a little more of the world around them and hopefully engender a greater appreciation for the natural world as well as the worlds people have created for themselves in the form of cities. If my photos are absurdly successful in that mission, perhaps someone will think twice about tossing away that recyclable bit of plastic or leaving their living room light on when he or she isn't at home. But that may be a bit ambitious.

Like I said, I also like to write. You can check out some samples of my work in THAT field at jimsrandompix.blogspot.com. My other great interest, outside of writing and photography, is travel and I'd like to share my experiences with the world. Mind you, I'm still a bit wet behind the ears as a globetrotter, but with the help of my fiance, I think I can make my way.

So, take a look around, let me know what you like, suggest my stuff to your friends or buy prints. And, I implore you, LEAVE COMMENTS!

Little Help?

Little Help?

There's a photo contest being conducted by one of my hometown's newspapers, Creative Loafing.  It's a weekly alternative newspaper chain that operates in a handful of different cities around the US.  The photos I've used for the contest are all from my gallery here:  Tampa Banner, City of Lights and my newly-posted Illuminated Palms (not to be confused with Lighted Palms).  My contest page is at http://adproof.creativeloafing.com/photos/photographer.php?pgid=James%20Manning, so if you would like to cast a vote, feel free to do so.  Thanks!

Anyone know how to create a high dynamic range image using Photoshop?  I've seen a few people using it to great effect and I'm interested in giving it a shot, only I don't know where to begin creating one.  It looks really cool, though, and I'm anxious to create a few of my own. It has also come to my attention that my camera seems to be entering its death-throes.  I have a Nikon Coolpix P90 that can't seem to find focus on the "Distance" setting; everything ends up blurry and hazy.  It's really quite a bummer.  Now's a terrible time for my camera to go on the blink as I'm in the middle of staying with my fiance in Spain and haven't the inco

Exploration!

Exploration!

I finally did a little more exploration of my environs yesterday:  I got out and took some photos around Parque Guell and La Sagrada Familia.  They're both quite interesting subjects to photograph, although I find that I have a bit of difficulty finding the right treatment on subjects in Parque Guell.  I think I got some good ones yesterday, though; I'm really interested to see how the Holga pictures turned out.  I'll post all of the results once I've run them through a little post-production in Photoshop. La Sagrada Familia is another interesting subject to photograph, although I think it's a bit easier to find good subjects there.  It is a
