Excuse the flood - Comics incoming

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 6, 2017, 2:13 AM
I've decided to upload all the pages of Shifters Redux (and probably brymstone at some point) to DA, as its not as important as it once was to have them on their own site and shuffle people around. Most of my support these days comes in the form of either private commissions, streaming commissions, or Patreon.

Its more important to have visibility where people live than worry about just having it in one spot. Its more viable now to have your comics wherever people will read them, than drive them to one spot for ad revenue or something. I know a lot of my support has always come from DA watchers, and I hope having all the pages here will help people discover the comics.

But I've got literally hundreds of pages to upload, so I'm sorry in advance about flooding your inboxes.

My Nieces and my sister have been through absolute hell this last year and a half. My sister is now in a messy, complicated, shitty divorce. There's a lot of terrible things that have happened, and unfortunately for legal reasons I can't get into the full extent of this, but suffice to say its bad, and she's in a very difficult position. She's a single mom now, with two kids, working two part-time jobs trying to make ends meet.

And now their family dog, the sweetest, most patient animal I have ever known, has lumps. It has been made clear she needs to go to the vet by a family friend who's a retired vet technician. (i'm guessing mammary tumors from the pictures) This dog is my Nieces' support animal, which has been helping them get through these tough times. Particularly the oldest one, who suffers from anxiety from the trauma of everything that's happened.

But because my sister's ex doesn't support her in any way financially, and has outright refused to help with the dog, my sister just doesn't have the financial resources to pay for vet bills. So she needs some help from fellow dog lovers.

She's set up a gofundme to help get the dog to the vet and get her the help she needs:

If you are reading this, and can support, even a few dollars, that would be amazing! If you /can't/ give money, please give support! Share in whatever social media you have, or repost this journal.
A few things to talk about in this journal, so lets get to it.

Vancoufur is happening again! March 9-12 at the Executive Airport Plaza Hotel in Richmond, BC, Canada! (That's basically right next to Vancouver, BC for those who aren't familiar with the West Coast). Che and myself will be there vending our wares, including the brand new printed version of Issue 3 of Shifters! Also got lots of buttons and prints, and at table commissions, and I will also be doing panels on drawing and making comics. More information can be found about Vancoufur here: vancoufur.org

To this end I have 2 badge commission types open until tomorrow and I still have slots! If you are interested in a badge, please let me know ASAP.

In other news, Shifters updated its final page for Issue 3 online today. I've been having some trouble with my webhosting, so I had to sort that out or it would have been up last week. :P I'm thinking I may start updating full pages again on DA/FA, rather than the preview images I've been using for the last several years. Its interesting how things change and have changed, and continue to change in the world of webcomics and online sharing. I'll have to write an article on it some day, because its just kind of fascinating.
If you want to check out the lastest update its here: shiftersonline.com/chapter-3-p…

That's all for me now, hopefully I'll see some of you at Vancoufur!
So, I have a patreon. It's not much right now, but I'd like to rework it so it's got more value for people that support me through it. Its also got to be stuff I can deliver. Also right now it mostly is just around Shifters, but it could possibly support Brymstone too if there was enough interest.

However, I'd like to get an idea of what sort of patreon rewards you, the supporters, feel have value. I don't have core membership anymore, or I'd probably do a poll, so this will have to do.

So, here are my personal observations so far with Patreon:
  •  I've offered things like exclusive livestreams and skype Q&As, and no one attends, so I feel like this has little value on a "patrons only" level currently.
  • I've got a strong feeling that people are mostly there just for the early updates of the comic/lineart previews. this makes some sense though, people are there for the /comics/ first and foremost.
  •  I don't really get much feedback on the wallpapers or any other art, though up till recently I wasn't posting random art.

So I'm talking to different groups of people here.

One is people who already support artists on patreon (mine or others), and that is what sorts of rewards do you personally value? What things do you want to participate in? How do you want and expect to interact with an artist you support on patreon.

The other group of people who aren't supporting people on patreon, but If you were going to support an artist, (and that doesn't have to be much, $1 minimum here guys, Less than a cup of coffee), what would entice you to do so? What would an artist need to be providing for you to say "Yes, this is worth my dollar a month." (or hopefully more).

Rewards I commonly see offered by artists include:
  • Access to a patron only 'art stream' of sketches, sneak peaks, and random unpublished stuff
  • Discounts on commissions/products
  • Priority on Commission slots
  • Tutorials (art, or otherwise)
  • Private Streams - Process, lessons
  • Free Commission, icons, sketches rewards at a certain tier
  • Hangouts, Q&As
  • High rez downloads, PSD files
  • wallpapers
  • Credits/shoutouts on art or in a comic
  • Cameos in comics
  • Process videos
  • Physical rewards (stickers, charms, pins, prints)
  • Access to an exclusive upload area with PDF and other goodies
  • 1 on 1 art lessons, redlines, how-to videos
  • Preview artwork, lineart, in progress sketches
Which of these do you find valuable? Are there other rewards not listed that you would want to see? Obviously the rewards vary by tier, but I'm trying to get a sense of which of these things do people actually like and find valuable.

I posed this to my current patrons, but they are rather silent on the matter. So I'm having to look elsewhere for feedback. So I'm very interested in any feedback I get.
Drawing lineart for shifters. Come and gawk if you want. Normally I'd be doing this for patrons only, but attendance has been sparse since its summer probably and everyone is out camping. Also other people might not even know I have a patreon for Shifters/Brymstone. It's here www.patreon.com/shadowsmyst if you want to check it out.

Some stuff is a little messed up though because they magically put my page in a beta for tagging and it screwed up posts. I haven't fixed yet. Doing this art first, then fixing that stuff.

So if you want a free preview of new pages, you can want to come and watch the stream. picarto.tv/ShadowsMyst

Penny the dog needs your help

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 17, 2015, 12:13 AM
I don't normally do this, but I can't sit idly by and watch a sweet, innocent animal suffering. I have to try to help. I'm hoping some animal loving people out there can help me out.

In this case, this is my parent's dog Penny.

Penny the dog by shadowsmyst

She's an absolute sweetheart, the gentlest dog. She's only three years old, but so very loving. I know my parents do love her, but they are hurting too. My mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and had to get a colostomy. She was hospitalized for two months (and almost died) which cost my family a lot of money. My father runs his own handyman business, but he's been in quite in a slump with the stress of my mother's health issues and general business downturn. Its been very difficult with my mother's hospitalization and now they are already facing overdue bills, bill collectors and serious issues with the state of their house. I've already had to buy them groceries and provide other support as I can, just to make sure my mother has food to eat (that she will eat), and I've already shelled out for flea medication for the dog earlier this month. But I'm not exactly rich either, and there's a limit to what support I can give and still take care of my own needs.

However, when I was up there this Saturday (Aug 15), My husband went to pet her ear and she yelped. I examined her ear, and found it to be full of yellowish pus. It was warm, and I'm sure there's a raging infection going on in there. She's also got some sores on her body, which may be allergies or some other kind of skin condition. I want to take her to the vet, but my parents simply cannot afford it. My mother is very attached to her, because the dog keeps her company when no one else is around, which is often because my dad is trying to make ends meet. I don't want to end up that they lose Penny, because it would upset my mother when she's already in a pretty delicate mental state. But its obvious that this ear thing has poor sweet Penny in serious pain, and this skin thing makes her terribly itchy. I'm worried its mange.

If I hadn't already had to dish out $500 this weekend for my own cat's vet and husband's car expenses, I would have taken her immediately to the vet. But being that I am flat broke at the moment, and this kind of infection should be treated immediately, I need a bit of help to get the money to get her at least to the vet for evaluation. I'm guestimating the vet visit and first set of treatment will be around $300-$500 CAD, but could be more. I'd also like to get her shots and get her dewormed as I'm pretty sure she's never been either.

If you would like to help Penny get what she needs to get better, please donate via paypal to shadowsmyst@gmail.com. Anything you can give will help. If there is more raised than what is needed, I will put it aside and use it for Penny's ongoing care, like flea management, grooming, and any ongoing medications she may require to get her healed up. The sooner I get the money, the sooner I can take her to the vet, but they require payment upfront, and I just can't afford to do it without a little help in the time frame I'd like to do it in, nor can I afford to go into more debt to cover it. Without help, it might take me more than a month to get the funds I need together, and I don't want her to suffer that long.

Thank you, in advance, for any help you can give.
