For the last two weeks I have been playing Majora’s Mask. A game I missed out on in my childhood. I never had an Expansion Pack plus I was actively playing the Dreamcast at the time. Anyway I’ve grown to love Majora’s Mask and I too have many issues with it that I would really want Nintendo to address if they decide to remake it. NO! the 3DS version does not count and should be immediately scrapped. To me thats nothing more than a Port with slightly better graphics and very questionable changes. It is NOT a remake and I will never acknowledge it to be.
I want a true faithful remake of Majora’s Mask for the Switch. Thats closer to the N64 version but EVERYTHING is better. If Nintendo included these things below into the game. I’d be much happier with Majora’s Mask!
I would call it Majora’s Mask Reawakening. I feel that subtitle is appropriate for a Remake since you are constantly turning back time to start afresh.
Before reading this please take note I have only played the N64 version of Majora’s Mask. However I am aware of some of the changes of the 3DS version.
My main criticism with Majora’s Mask is there is no way to effectively speed up time without skipping a huge portion of the day. Lets says its 6am and you need to do something at 3:30pm, you’re fucked. Because the song of Double Time forces you to straight to 6pm. So you have to literally WAIT IT OUT. Or very very tediously sit through the Grandma’s stories. So enjoy hanging around Clock Town until then... You need to wait over 8 game hours for the Alien attack on the first day From 6pm to 2:30am This is another example where a speed up is necessary. All Nintendo needed to do is make a song which doubles the speed of time WITHOUT! skipping.
Note I’ve only played the N64 version, this may have been fixed in the 3DS vers? Really what should have happened. The Song of Double Time should literally do just that, double the normal speed of the day. Then have a different named song which skips a portion of the day to 6pm or Dawn. This would make me happy! And then I’d feel less frustrated. The Inverted Song of Time is down, A, right repeat. The song which doubles the speed flow could be down, down, A, A, right, right. Then right, right, A,A, down, down, skips the day to 6pm or 6am. We want to speed up time anywhere in the world! As it currently stands the only method Nintendo gives you is Grandma’s stories in Clock Town which even then just allows you to skip 2 game hours or a full day.
Since Clock Town is the main hub of the game I wish it was much bigger and more to do in it. Sure, N64 Hardware limitations and time restraints. But that’s why I said the game needs a proper remake faithful to the N64 version. We need more people in the town, actual market stalls in the town which sells vegetables, fruit etc, a bakery, a cafe which sells coffee, an ice cream stall, a fountain, an actual park, more houses, just more everything... Nintendo could implement some things from BOTW like crafting, food preparation etc say you can buy food from the market stalls to then cook into meals. They will serve as health and magic recovery. Maybe even give you temporary health and magic reinforcement.
More Masks, more quests, more minigames, new NPCs with variety. I feel that Clock Town just isn’t lively enough for me, there aren’t that many people in each area. North Clock Town is practically empty, if there is unused land, fill it. To me anyway Clock Town is like the Capital of Termina so it needs to be huge! I think Nintendo did ok considering the N64 hardware but if this was remade for the Switch I would expect Clock Town to be at least double if not triple its current size. What I thought about is a school in the town would be good. It could be filled with the Bomber boys and Romani clones! lol (jks) still this is another building to put in it! Actually I did see fanart of Malon wearing school uniform in the past (imgur.com/a/veHWtBr) what a coincidence! Clock Town Academy! haha. In a classroom there could be a lesson on the anatomy of the plant enemy Peahat with a blackboard and labels. The teacher could drop a hint by saying. There could be one buried nearby so be careful!
More female NPCs in Clock Town. Why are they predominantly male? As in... out and about. Yeah there are female characters inside buildings.
Romani Ranch is huge! So there is further opportunity for more things to do there. We have the dog racing game thats cool! And the Cuckoo coop next to it. How about an actual horse racing mini game? One that you can do anytime?
Same again, if there is space fill it.
QoL improvements: At Clock Town Shooting Range, increase time by a few seconds. I can get to 49 points but then I miss the 50th by literally a couple of seconds. Its just annoying that I have to redo the whole game again. On Second Day Deku Mini game. Make moving platforms slower. They are too fast! sometimes its hard for me to calculate when to leave the flower to make the platform.
We need a 999 Rupee Wallet!
We need game achievements!
Rupee Hoarder - Deposit 5000 Rupees in the Bank.
Collect all Heart Pieces
Complete the Masters training
Teach the dance to the Rosa Sisters
Save Romani and the Cows at the Ranch.
Theres so many you could add!
We need an Item Bank! One thing I find an inconvenience in the game is how you need to wait until 10pm to buy Chateaux Romani. So if you start the day at 6am, you will need to wait to 10pm to buy it. Which also means you cannot start any temple before 10pm if you want to use it. If you could store the milk in an Item Bank then take it out at 6am it would save loads of time and make the game more enjoyable. Blue potions and Magic Beans are something else you could store in the bank to save time.
We need a better Pictograph! One that takes colour pictures and of course many more pictures too. Basically... give us the Shiekah Slate camera function from BOTW in Majora’s Mask.
A 4th Item slot, one to the top of the “Circle” move Tatl’s icon to a different key somewhere else. This is one aspect I truly want added to the game! 3 slots is not enough! One will always be occupied by a Mask whether it be Transformation or Bunny Hood etc. One for the Bow, one for the Hookshot/Ocarina. Now the 4th one could be for a bottle or extra item. We Need It! Plus it would save us time constantly going in and out of the menu screen.
More enemy variety, I can recall fighting the Goblin looking dude who warps in and out of portals about 3 times in the game. I kinda disliked how he was reused over and over in the other locations.
We defo need a skip option for songs. Especially for the effigy one as it can take up to 10 seconds each time. You see, since you play all these songs so much in the game they all add up in time. I bet in an entire play through at least 1 hour is spent just playing the songs. So allowing us to skip right after the song notes are pressed will help so much! So basically when the jingle occurs after playing a song have a skip button right after it.
One more Transformative Mask. I was thinking a Rito Link. Imagine flying around everywhere? That would be really cool! Add it plz! Perhaps after you finish the Stone Tower Temple. Maybe a chance of a 5th Temple? That could make use of a possible Rito Mask? Like a Sky Temple or something! Of course a Rito Village would be nice and in addition I would have liked more Sheikah presence in the game. Rito Link’s instrument could be an Accordion. I’m thinking the 5th temple could be an optional extra dungeon for you to complete.
Theres not really many people wandering around Termina. Theres that one guy up a tree. The guy trying to dismantle the boulder, Tingle obviously. Then just a couple of Zora, Goron and Deku in their respective zones. The overall world feels too barren for me. Hopefully there will be more people to meet in a Remake. Like in BOTW you do see people trekking around who you can talk to and help.
Remade text boxes with the name of the person talking. Voice acting is optional then again the Zelda series did not use it much pre BOTW. Majora’s Mask just has grunts which is actually fine I think. But maybe in gaming today full voice acting is to be expected.
Add an extra empty bottle to make it 7.
Add a couple more hearts to create more heart pieces. To basically make more rewards if new content is added. So have 12 hearts in a row instead of 10.
As it stands... I enjoyed Majora’s Mask, the N64 Version that is. I would probably give it an 8.6/10. Considering the N64 hardware and time restraints Nintendo did well with the game overall. However for me, if the game was to get to the 9.5+/10 score it would need to incorporate the above points into a proper remake. Apparently the original game was made in 1-2 years. So imagine a 3-4 year development span? This game would be absolutely legendary!
Its sad that I’m gonna say this but I feel a lot of things about this game just serve to waste your time. Like you are waiting for something all the time. Its very reminiscent of Shenmue where you need to wait several in game hours to progress with the story. Its at least in Majora’s Mask’s defence, you can skip time albeit not in a perfect way. Plus I feel with a lot of stuff that goes on in this game just serves to waste your time. You need to wait all the time, you need to wait for the stupid Deku salesman dude to fly away from his flower. Bye 20 seconds of my life each time. You need to wait for him to fly from Clock Town to the Hole in the ground by which he takes a huge detour and takes forever to reach it. You need to wait from 6pm to 2:30am for the Alien attack to start at the Ranch. You need to wait for the songs to play and finish before you can continue (Which is hell with the Effigy song). When you slow down time or return time to normal you have to again sit through an unskippable cutscene. It all adds up in wasted time for the player. Funnily enough the ONLY thing you can skip is the transformation sequences. Honestly it would be amazing how allowing us to SKIP the bullshit in between people would like this game more. Let Us Double The Speed Flow Of The Game That Would Be Fucking Amazing Nintendo! Remake Majora’s Mask Adding This In!
Basically you have to be a patient person to enjoy Majora’s Mask as it stands. I think comparing it to Shenmue 1 is very justified. I do feel as if a Third of this game is spent just waiting around for stuff to happen. If you think about what Majora’s Mask could be it shows just how bad and lazy the 3DS version is. I truly wish Nintendo could read this and realise that MM is far from a “perfect” game and it deserves the full remake treatment.
P.S if I sound highly negative in some parts it isn’t fully intentional. This is my “constructive” criticism of Majora’s Mask. I genuinely did enjoy the game.
