The Goblin Queen

Who is this? And what is here?
And in the lighted palace near
Died the sound of royal cheer;
And they crossed themselves for fear,
All the Knights at Camelot;
But Lancelot mused a little space
He said, "She has a lovely face;
God in his mercy lend her grace,
The Lady of Shalott."
(Lady of Shalott quote)

The Black Queen of Arkadia - a story I am working on with my husband... She is the Queen of creatures, woven out of myth and cobwebs, and had been asleep for centuries too long, thanks to the greed of her absolute twin, The White Queen.

Something awakened her...

She calls the Hunt on a strange boy who wishes to join their Court, and is... stunned, by his abilities to turn away her powers of creation, so she ends up using the Hunt to distract her sister and steal him away all for herself.

Not a scene out of the story, but more of HER portrait, her sadness, and uncaring for that which is around her. Nor do you (the viewer) din to see the whole of her face, for what are you but a mere mortal?

This is excellent, I love artwork with story behind it.

At first glance while noticing the title I thought of a poem called "The Goblin Market" by Christina Rosestti. In the painting I thought of Laura who bought the fruits of the goblin men, following the same footsteps as her sister, Jeanie, who also accepted their offerings. Every night she'd return to the glen to listen for their return.

It's a long poem in the form of a short story published in 1862 that was not meant for children, yet written -for- children. XD

Ooh, I'm going to have to look this up :)

There will be a goblin market, but that part hasn't been fleshed out enough for me to work on yet. Been kind of just doing them here and there as I have time.

I love how the colors of this piece look earthy yet they still have this other-worldly glow. I also really enjoy the little goat-like guy who's reaching up for the elf woman's hand.

What a beautiful painting! Such a lovely scene, great paintingstyle and I love the colours too. They are really earthly and nocturnal, which I think suits the subject very well. I honestly wish I could paint like this.

Practice Practice Practice :)
Every year I get a "I need to do better than last year piece" and this was her. This took me two months of forcing myself to push it just a hair further, 3 or 4 people giving me suggestions on where to take her. Plus even the sketching before hand took a very long time before I got it all right :)

I think that's a great idea, the 'better than last year piece' I may steal your idea for my photos! Will be a good drive.. :)

It's not really stealing :) It was maybe one of a few 'lessons' I learned from college! My favorite painting teacher Tim Doud always said the moment you get comfortable with what you're doing (as in it comes easy to you), it's time to learn something new and push a little harder.

Very true, must be a good teacher!

Beautiful, delicate and mysterious...I am a very privileged mortal to catch a glimpse of the Queen. Great job! :)

She's still one of my favorites to have created, for sure. And extremely picky on how she wanted to appear too. I had a few other alternates, but this was the ONLY one that screamed at me to finish. Funny how the rest, she was looking at us, but it just didn't have the feeling that it really needed:)

I completely agree. This version perfectly depicts the feeling you were going for in your description. :)

wow beautiful <3 gorgeous concept

The limited color palette really works here; the way you've used ranges of brown and blue to carve so many of the little silhouetted goblin shapes into/out of the scenery adds so much to the feel of the piece.

This one was definitely difficult:) One of my friends suggested I really try to push the darkness in this, specially since I tend to only do light and airy.
