Face of a Killer by shadowfire-x Face of a Killer by shadowfire-x
Face of a Cicada Killer that is. Their jaws are quite formidable, but the males are stingless, and the females are rather placid.

How did you get so close then? Did you see one outside?

A gentle chilling works well. I caught it in a net, and put it in the freezer for just a couple minutes. The cold makes them sluggish. Once it was back out in the sun, it warmed up after a moment, and flew away =3.

It's because they're cold-blooded. It happens with reptiles and other cold-blooded animals, too. :3

That's one impressive close-up. I sure wouldn't like to face this if I were a cicada, those jaws look evil.

Thank you!

And, if you're a cicada, you should be most fearful of the female's sting. It paralyzes cicadas, then buries them, and lays a single egg on the bug. The larva of the cicada killer eats the prey alive.

Oh-uh. It does sound painful.
Very interesting insect. I don't think we have something like that here, probably because there aren't that many cicadas.

That is one heckuva closeup! I really love being able to see all the detail of the eyes that way. How big WAS this thing, anyway? Great shot!
