“I hope you realize what a lucky boy you are?” Said my mom
As I stood there in my new school uniform, I couldnt believe that I had got myself in this position all because of a packet of chewing gum, can you believe it, if I hadnt have gone back for that gum then I wouldnt have been the 10,000th customer of Barretts, the local ladies dress store, the store was offering a prize for the 10,000th customer and I won, initially I was over the moon because I thought I had won the prize of a new bike but that was the prize for a boy.
Let me explain, I went to town to get my neck length hair cut but before that could happen I went to the store to help my sister and her friend bring home all their purchases, I went into the womens change room as I had done many times before, but the store had introduced a new policy that boys couldnt go into the ladies change room which I was totally unaware of, when my sister saw me she said she had to dress me as a girl to get past the old lady watching for such things, of course I fought it until I realized there was no getting past the old biddy, but it worked, I passed the old lady went through the cash but went back for some gum, thereby making me the 10,000th customer.
I was taken upstairs to the salon and given a full makeover and have my picture in the newspapers, the store wanted as much coverage as they could get after all, the first prize for a girl was the makeover and a full scholarship to the local school for girls, can you see now where this is going?
When my mom and dad finally arrived (My sister had called them to tell them what had happened) I was in full dressup and make up, I thought my dad was going to go nuts, and he did until he found out that the prize was a scholarship to a local school, I was thinking but wait till he finds out its a “Girls” school he will hit the roof.
How wrong could I be.
Oh he was mad alright “No son of mine is going to a girls school” I heard him tell my mom, but then she dragged him to one side and calmed him down, “Look Tom as you know we cant afford to send Karl Lee to a school as good as this one, so lets play it by ear and try and figure something out, I mean look at him, doesn't he look cute all made up like that, and the damage has been done, he's had his picture taken, it will be all over the town by tomorrow, do you really want people to think that he is your son?”
So mom, dad, my sister, her friend and myself all piled into our station wagon and set off home, with my sister and her friend giggling about how much fun they were going to have dressing me up, I was so humiliated.
