Matthew was always too competitive for his own good, he would enter every competition he saw or read, he would even enter competitions off cereal boxes, if they had a decent prize, his whole family, his sister, mother and even his father, were fed up with his win at all costs attitude.
It was the first day of the summer vacation, Matthew was up first, (As usual) he scanned the newspapers for competitions, there were all the usual crosswords and sudoko's, he never bothered with those because there was no prizes for winning.
The morning was going well, he had already completed two competitions before anyone else had even got out of bed, his sister, Jo, was first up, (well second if you think about it) she saw Matt sitting at the breakfast table, she was wondering what kind of summer it was going to be with her brother.
Jo doesnt dislike her brother, but this competition thing was getting totally out of hand, she felt she had to do something to "Fix" it, as she reading her "TeenVogue" magazine while eating her cereal, she saw a competition, "The Works" was the headline, as she read more, the competition was for young girls and the prize was for a full makeover, a wry smile came over Jo's face, she ripped out the page where it said exactly what the prize was, so it just said what ages could enter and what the prize was, "The works"
Jo - "Wow what a great competition"
Matt - "What did you say"?
Jo - "Just a dumb competition you wouldn't be interested"
Without even looking up Matt asked, "Is there a prize"?
Jo - '' Oh yes, the prize is ''The Works" it says its worth up to $1,000"
That got Matt's attention, she knew it would, he didn't even read the small print and was already checking out the questions, he considered them sooo easy, within 15 minutes he had answered them all, he asked Jo, "so what now"?
Jo - "You fill the form out with your name and address and we send it in, I can do that for you if you like, while you look for other competitions.
She wasn't usually this helpful, but Matt had no reason to think anything bad, he handed Jo the answers, she was trying to be careful so he couldn't see what she was writing, in the name box she wrote "MADDY" Matt snatched it from her, she thought the game was up, he said, "No I'll do it, I don't want you copying the answers", lucky for Jo he never noticed the name difference as he filled in the rest of the form, just as he finished, his mom came down stairs and he handed her the envelope saying, "Can you post this mom, and don't let Jo see inside" again a wry smile from Jo.
Two weeks later, a letter arrived, Jo opened it, and threw away the envelope saying "Maddy" had won, "The Works", Matt read the letter, all he had to do was show up at the address on Saturday and he would receive his prize, he was so happy to win, he never even asked Jo why she had opened the letter. His mom and dad insisted on going with him, as his dad said it could be a scam, Jo asked if she could come, she didn't want to miss out on the laughs when Matt found out just what the "Prize" was, Matts mom suggested they could make a day of it and then take Matt to the hairdressers to get his usual buzz cut for the summer, as it had grown quite long over the school term.
When they arrived at the address given in the letter, they all stared as in disbelief, they were stood outside a women's hair salon, Matt's mom said,
" There must be some mistake" Matt re-read the address, and said, "No this is it, this is where my $1000 prize is and I'm not leaving without it" They all went inside, Jo could hardly keep her face straight, Matt went to the counter and showed the lady the letter, the lady said, "Your Maddy"? Matt thought she had said Matty, so he said, "Yes, that's me" The lady looked surprised, but said, "ok lets get you started" Matt's eyes lit up finally he was going to get his $1000 prize, Jo looked over at Matt, confused, the salon lady invited Matt to the back, "You can take a seat there if you wish", she said to mom and dad, and pointed to some seats in the front of the salon.
Matt was led by the lady to some chairs, "Ok I'm going to wash your hair first", Matt was a little surprised but a $1000 prize was the biggest he had even won, he didn't want to miss one second of it, he had no idea exactly what they were doing, he just sat back and let the ladies do what they do, after his hair was washed they put some cream on his head, this must be some kind of conditioner he thought, twenty minutes later they washed his hair for a second time and wrapped it in a towel.
They again Matt was led to another part of the salon, a young girl used a piece of ice on Matt's ears, he didn't feel thing as she pierced his ears, and she added the diamond studs as part of "The Works" prize, next was his eyebrows, again she froze them with the ice cubes, pulling each hair with expert precision, it was then that Jo felt this had gone far enough, she left her chair to save her brother from further embarrassment, "Matt there's something you need to know" she said, "Get away from me" Matt replied, "your just jealous"
Jo - "No Matt you don't understand"
Matt - "Oh I understand perfectly, you never like me to win prizes, and now I've won the biggest prize of my life you want to spoil it for me"
Jo - "But Matt!"
She was cut off by Matt again, he just didn't want to listen, Matt's mom saw what had happened and saw that Jo was actually crying, once Jo had explained that it was all just a joke that had gone too far, but how Matt had said she was jealous, his mom called the stylist over and told her what she wanted her to do to "Maddy" He needed teaching a lesson. She cut his hair into a girl style, meanwhile, his mom went next door and came back with a large bag and a smaller box.
Matt had been so relaxed in the chair he didn't even realize that they had painted his nails the color that his mom had chosen for him, "Hot Pink" His newly dyed blonde hair looked amazing, But as he sat up to look in the mirror for the first time, He let out a scream any girl would have been proud of,
Matt - "What the heck is going on"?
Matt's mom - "Well, if you hadn't been so intent on winning at all costs, all the time, you would have noticed what was going on around you, I've talked to your dad and we've decided you should stay as "Maddy" until you start being nicer and less competitive, now go and put this dress on, and there are some shoes for you in the smaller box, Matt, pulled the dress from the large bag, it was a black and white gingham dress with daises around the neck, "But mom" was all he managed to say before his mother smacked his bottom, and said, "Not another word young lady, now move, or should I call your father?"
When Matt and his mom walked back out to the front of the salon, his dad was blown away, but he still managed to say "Ok ladies where should we go for lunch''?
Jo - "Can we go to the Russian tea room daddy, its so sweet"
Matt - "I hate that place"
Dad - "Ok so the Russian tea room it is then, then turned to his newest daughter and said "Looks like your going to be Maddy for quite some time son"
