Can you believe it, I got the gopher job, I have never had less expectations about getting a job, I admit, Amy did a great job of getting me ready. It wasn't much of an interview I got the job based solely on the fact I knew Amy. At least here I could talk.
I got thrown in at the deep end, working for Amy's boss Angela, this is pretty much how the whole day went.
"I need you to place a lunch order for me." Angela shouted from her office
I took down her order before Angela stepped out of the office to head for the ladies room. I reached for my phone and called in the order at a nearby eatery before I placed one for myself as well. I wrote down when I could pick it up before I went back to finishing her spreadsheet. After Angela walked back into the office, she asked me if he had placed her order. After confirming that I had and when it would be ready for pickup, she told me to drop off her dry-cleaning on my way to the luncheonette.
I tried to act upset about it, but my efforts did not fool Angela. She gave me the money for her lunch and dry cleaning before she sent me out the door with her dirty clothing in hand. I walked through the hallway and rode the elevator down to the underground parking garage before I remembered that my car was parked on the street.
"Shit," I said as the doors opened. I pressed the button for the ground floor and road the elevator back up a floor. After the doors opened again I headed for the front door of the building I reached for the door handle just as a man was reaching for it too, his hand dwarfed my small hand, it looked even smaller with my painted nails, "Sorry" He said. "No" I answered it's ok,"
He walked out of the building with me, and I could feel the warm sun on my skin. The breeze up the skirt of this dress was different from anything I had experienced before, during that time he asked if maybe we could go for coffee sometime, I smiled neither saying yes or no, I smiled and he walked south on the next street,
I opened my car and got behind the wheel. I slipped off my heels and put on a pair of flats before I started the engine and pulled out of the parking spot. After exiting the parking lot, I drove down the street to the dry cleaner that was located a few blocks from the eatery I had placed the lunch order with that afternoon. I parked in the shopping center and started towards the dry cleaner with Angela's clothing in hand.
I greeted the old woman behind the counter with a smile as I placed Angela's clothing down on the counter. The woman examined the clothes as she rang them up before she said with a heavy accent, "These aren't for you?"
"Oh, no," I admitted, knowing that the woman knew that I was dropping them off for another person. "Who they for?" She asked.
"My boss," I answered, struggling not to smile at the way my admission sounded. The old woman paid no attention as she told me the amount that was due. I paid it from the money that Angela had given me before I took the dry cleaning ticket. I walked out of the dry cleaner and went back to my car. I then drove over to the luncheonette. I got out of the car and walked into the crowded building.
I looked around, hoping that no one would recognize me in the crowd. I went to the cashier and waited in line. As I waited, a young woman walked over behind me to stand in the line with her purchases. I could see her looking me over. I felt nervous for a second I thought she may have recognized me, before the girl realized that I had noticed her looking at me, she girl smiled as she said, "I love those shoes. They're so cute." "These. Oh, thanks," I replied before I complimented her bag.
Just another day in the life of a gopher, ha ha, Hopefully tomorrow will be better as I will be working with Amy, phew.
