Lame title is lame.

This was a vexel I did back in December 2009 along side a tutorial I did for Digital Artist magazine.

A bit delayed, but I wasn't comfortable uploading until I was paid.

Herpderp.

Edit: sweet jesus, this has only been up 24 hours and I've already been given a DD by the lovely Jussta! Thank you so much, sweetpea! !!

I'm so glad you're vexelling again, it's great seeing an old skool vexel artist come back and shake her pentooled raster ass!

From the offset, my impression is that this was going to be a carbon copy of the original reference image. Hence asking to see the reference. Sadly your client didn't want anything added - a little disappointing.

I would have definately said that an artist with your experience and skill shouldn't be carbon copying - but ofc your digital sketches and paintings prove you know how to modify things and go reference free. Your skill is not questioned at all.

So let me get down with this vexel. The whole piece is a feast for the eyes... little details after little details and what I'm most impressed with are the earrings. Whilst a posterize tracer would have made these elements look absolutely unfocused and not sharp at all, you've definately shown you have an eye for details and managed to successfully illustrate each of the beads in the earrings. Great work there.

The eyes are very inviting, although I would have been tempted to make the green a little more bold.

The hair... oh my the fucking hair woman. It is very well done although a little flat... it is crying out for more contrast and some further tones in it to make it look more alive.

The colours used are fabulous and I feel with such a skilled piece, the hair would have been significantly improved if you adding more tones to the hair.

Other than that, I think the whole piece is absolutely amazing. Please get back into vexelling... you're one of my favourite vexel artists!

No, I don't, and it would be against my contract to provide you with a copy. If you're interested in one of the tutorials I've written, you may be able to buy a back-copy of the Advanced Photoshop magazine that the first tutorial was featured in, or a back copy of Digital Artist magazine, which the second tutorial was featured in.

[link] issue 55 and [link] issue 2.

It seems that they're out of stock from the publisher, but they may still be available from places that stock the magazine.

I know that my initial vexel tutorial featured in advanced photoshop magazine was also included in a larger Advanced Photoshop magazine featuring the best tutorials of the year, which I bought in January, so that may still be available.

Thank you so much for the information!! I actually was able to get the Collection Vol. 4 with the cover of issue 55 on it, so I'm crossing my figures that your tutorial is in it!!:)

That's fantastic! If it's the big chunky collection volume with my vexel on the front, my tutorials definitely in there :)

Glad to hear you could get your hands on it! I'd also love to hear how you find the tutorial :)

This is absolutely amazing. I love the detail! I'm a minimalist myself, and skip out on alot of the amazing details you've created here. I usually only vector, and am thinking I need to try vexeling at least once. Amazing, amazing all around. Congrats on your DD! Her skin is so amazing, so is everything else. I just wanna..touch it..
Right then. Big yuck spot on my screen now.

... it was made in photoshop.

Besides, it's not about the final outcome, it's about the techniques used.

You might be using a different technique, it looks like you've got a lot of meshwork in yours, but I could be wrong.

I believe that `ChewedKandi has a tutorial or two you could look at that might help with Illustrator?

the face looks pale while the area around the eyes is darker. doesn't seem like a natural contrast

Well, the eyes are the darkest part of the face, and I was aiming to make her pale, so *shrugs*

I wasn't particularly aiming for 'natural' anyway. All of my vexels have a cartoony element.

Yeah. If i'd had more time, I would have definitely spent it on the skin. Unfortunately, that's what you get when you're working to a time limit.

Thanks for the comment. :)

Quick question-- what makes an image a vexel vs. a digital painting?
Reply
:iconsewwy:
Sewwy Featured By Owner May 10, 2010   Digital Artist
Well, for one, you'd be pretty shunned if you used brushes in a vexel... :p

If you look at my close ups version of this, you'll be able to see pretty distinct layers: The way I create vexels is through the building up of solid layers and then the lowering of that layer's opacity to slowly build up tone. I end up with thousands of layers, which, again, is probably frowned upon in digital painting.

It's just a completely different technique. A vexel draws on the style of vector art but is created entirely in raster. :P
