Tyrannosaurus or allosaurus... these dinosaurs are roughly similar to those species. This is a more colorful, livelier version of an Escher-type T-rex tessellation I did a couple of weeks ago.

Latin for "Give Us Peace", that is unexpected.

Another contrast of dualities: competition vs cooperation. Empathy vs selfishness. Violence vs peace.

In his book "The Selfish Gene" Dawkins argues (effectively in my opinion) that what seems to be altruistic behavior is often in our self-interest. He shows how teachings like "Love thy neighbor" or "Turn the other cheek" can enhance our chances for survival. Even if approached from completely different world views it is still possible to arrive at the same memes of tolerance and forgiveness.

But actually following these policies is a lot harder than just paying them lip service. In my own case I still sometimes succumb to my vengeful nature even though I know better.

Where I learned the song "Dona nobis pacem" will surprise you even more, Hop. I learned it in a church. (Unitarian Universalist... OK, so it's sorta kinda a church, and sorta kinda not.)

I agree with you and Dawkins, that working toward cooperation and peace can be a selfish act. Strangely, it's the OPPOSITE behavior-- selfishness and non-altruism-- that Ayn Rand felt was so obviously the way forward that she made it the central principle of a philosophy she called "objectivism". It's simply sad that someone (Ayn Rand) could be so wrong yet think they're objective! From hunting mammoths to nationalized armies, health insurance, and police forces to public libraries, cooperation and averaging out the wins and losses is simply, objectively, good policy for the group and the individual's success.

EDIT: I meant to write "my church", not "a church". Yup... I go to a church on Sundays. It's not a faith-based organization, though. We call ourselves "principles-based" because we agree on a set of 7 principles, but don't arrive at those principles by the same faith-based road. We have Christians, buddhists, a la carte-ists, atheists, and agnostics.

So do I ... and so does every kid under 12. It was my frustration with WANTING so much to do a dinosaur tess that led me to finally figure out a way...same with the shark tessellation shown elsewhere.
