Serious comics

We like comics, and we like art, and we like comics that are art. Which is what we're looking for with this group: people who want to extend the artistic boundaries of comics, and who know art when they see it. As for "serious": we don't mean "somber," we mean, "seriously, that's fucking good!" Now that you know what we're about, if you would like to join, READ THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES.

Here is a basic guideline for the kind of work we're looking for:

1. "IT HAS TO BE COMICS." Comics are sequential; we do not want individual images, even if they're splash pages (unless you've been submitting a longer series and the splash page comes up in it and is part of the sequence. So you have to have been submitting sequential pages before we'll consider a splash for the gallery). Also, we like many strips, so we won't be exclusive, but we would like to encourage full pages. We do not want to be jerks about this, but lately we have received a rather large number of membership requests that have come from people who do not take this guideline seriously. We have ZERO interest in rejecting people who honestly want to join if they are on the same page as us; we do not like rejecting people, but will do so if their work is not comics. Single illustrations will not be accepted to this group, and so if you do not have any comic pages on your page, you will be rejected. It's nothing personal; it's just what our group is about.

2. "Form fits function and function fits form." In other words, we're not picky about which styles are acceptable, but you have to work in the style you work in for a real reason; it has to fit what you're trying to do, not just because it's all you can do. Let us say this less bluntly: we don't mind people who are just starting out, since we want everyone to learn. But really consider why you're working in the style you're working in - like, why it's appropriate to what you think you'd like to accomplish with your comics.

3. "We all improve when the medium of comics improves." We want the possibilities of comics as a form of expression to expand beyond what they already are. And that means, well, we don't mind people imitating each other here; techniques are developed because they support the meaning of what you're doing (for example, linear perspective was not developed so stuff could look like stuff in paintings, but because the idea that a single viewer could synopsize all visual reality was considered to be a very meaningful thing). So we want to develop new techniques that can become meaningful. In other words, that will become part of the medium, and so useful to any artist who wants to use it for his or her own artistic purposes.

4. Addendum to #3. We like debate about the merits of works of art. We'd like as many of our members as possible to submit work for critique, so there can be a discussion and we'll all advance.

5. "No, no, no." Sorry to be a bit too exclusive, but we think certain types of work are well-represented on dA, so we will not accept submissions of manga or straightforward superhero comics. This does not mean we do not like these things (one of the co-founders even plans some day to write and illustrate the Fantastic Four, whether Marvel likes it or not), it just means that, for this group, it's not what we're looking for. Please feel free to watch us if you illustrate either of these things, though- really, we mean no offense in excluding them.

6. "Alan Moore knows the score." (Sorry to be quoting from a band most people don't remember, P.W.E.I., but it gets at what we think counts as comic "art"). We bow before Alan Moore, and think he is the epitome of the unrecognized artistic genius of comic art (we comic artists all recognize its genius, but other people still disagree for some reason). Alan Moore knows that art wastes no resources. Alan Moore knows that every square inch of every page has to count for something. Alan Moore knows that serious art doesn't have to be tragic (comedies are serious, too). Alan Moore knows lots of things we don't, but if we pool all of our resources we can maybe, as a group, come closer to his glory.

Now, a lot of this probably doesn't help you understand what we're looking for, and a lot of it is subjective. But that's the way it goes. We love comics and we're serious about them, so we're seriously going to consider what comes our way, and we hope to amass a kick-ass collection here.

:iconmichaelcleaves: :iconbesnglist:

Because of the dozens of declined submissions per week, I have to say it loud and clear now:
That felt good, thanks!
As time passes, things get old, so is this group, so I'm about to just let it die.

The quality of works on the whole dA is getting lower, also the quality of people's interactions.

Thank you for your collaboration so far and I wish you best.

Hello, you are not accepting artworks anymore? Or why did my page expire four times in a row?
besnglist Featured By Owner May 24, 2017
It happens, mate. But I should probably close this group in the near future.
VikJones Featured By Owner May 25, 2017  Professional Digital Artist
Ah. Well, maybe you could at least write a journal or something.

Thanks for accepting me! :)

However, I'm not sure how to submit my work. It looks like everyone has their own specific folder. I don't want to make a mess, so what should I do?

besnglist Featured By Owner Apr 21, 2016
You're welcome!

Submit to the Featured folder, please. That thing with folders we abandoned a while ago.

Abandoned? :D Ok, thanks much!

Hello, I'm RomanJones's (who has a folder here) co-writer and I'm making a spin-off for his comic which is submitted in here. Can I upload in his folder?
besnglist Featured By Owner Apr 28, 2015
Hello. Can you check it with him and confirm it with me, just to be on the safe side that he doesn't mind?
VikJones Featured By Owner Apr 28, 2015  Professional Digital Artist
He sits beside  me (we live together) and actually suggested it. Should he send you a note or some kind of confirmation?
besnglist Featured By Owner Apr 28, 2015
No it's ok, go for it :)
