Mookie and Beautiful Assistant Number 1 ask the crowd to cheer for Princess Tutu

The Princess Tutu costume was made and worn by me.

Photo was taken by TheBigTog at Connecticon 2009 and is posted with permission.

I made a pattern for the bodice from a bodice I owned as part of a ballet costume. It is cotton twill with a layer of interfacing, boning, and a muslin lining.
The skirt is a premade lycra tutu panty, 5 layers of hand-ruffled petticoat netting, three layers of hand-ruffled pink tulle, and a twill plate to match the bodice.
I didn't have a pattern, but I found ballet-tutu instructions online.
I originally ruffled around 10 layers of netting for the skirt, each one taking at least 2 hours since the strips of netting started out between 15 and 20 feet long!
The wings are yellow tulle over a wire frame, the blue "feather" things are cyberlox over wire.
The wig was, in a previous life, a plain white bob. I dyed it pink with Katie Blair's wig dye and formed the antenna with a felt-and-wire base, pink markers, fiber from the wig, and lots of glue. Then I sewed on a piece of white felt as a base for the feathers. The crown is paperclay painted gold and sewn onto the skin top of the wig.
The necklace was fun to make. I used a template I found on a tutorial online. The glue I used on it smelled so bad I had to use a respirator while I was working on it!

Omg! Is this a PT cosplayer that ACTUALLY can DANCE?
I commend you.
Your tutu is actually really good, compared to a lot that I've seen, too!
Where did you find the tutorials for the necklace and tutu? O_o I've been looking forever and I can't find any...

haha, it is! Thank you ^^

This is the tutorial I used for the necklace:[link]

Unfortunately _both_ websites I used for the tutu are giving me 404s >_< It is hard to find a tutorial for a real tutu online. Tutu.com has things you can pay for but my free ones seem to have gone away :(

The basic idea is you take very long strips of petticoat netting (20-15 ft each) in different (decrementing) widths (I started with 12.5" and went down to I think 9.5"), ruffle them, and sew them on to a tutu panty or basque. One tutorial I found actually recommended sewing them in alternating directions, which is what I did here.

I originally ruffled enough netting for 10 layers but wound up only using 4 because the netting supported itself better than I thought it would. For a flatter tutu I would've needed more layers.

Or if you want a much easier way to get a tutu, you can buy a practice tutu: [link]

Yeah! I spent sooo many hours looking, and then I found Tutu.com...but the problem with that is, I got the book, but I don't understand it....thanks for that! That really helps.

But wow, thanks for actually replying! (and for trying to find the tutorials)

;^; well I hope that helps you understand the book a little better.

and it's no trouble, I know how frustrating it is not to find any information on tutus!

maybe I should do a Princess Tutu tutorial for others like us lol

Haha, that'd be cool. You don't have to if you don't want to, though :P
