Ph.D. student at the Charles University in Prague
I am a zoologist specializing on vertebrate zoology, I am a part of Fish Evo group focusing on sensory systems and their dynamics in evolution of teleost fishes. In my research, I focus on developmental plasticity of vision in freshwater fish species of central Europe, and also work occassionally with cichlids from west Africa.
I consider art being my hobby which I'm unable to give up on. I discovered the oil painting technique at high school and have been practising since then. Although I was born into a family where no one ever created art (nor was the University graduate in any field - except for father), my parents left me be myself, and I consider myself lucky.
  • Reading: Emily Voigt: The Dragon Behind the Glass
  • Watching: ... out for monsters under my bed
  • Drinking: pure caffeine
Long time no see.

Well, it clearly has been a long time since I have written the last journal entry (which nobody reads, really). I have little to no time (or I have been lazy as fuck, dear reader) to write almost anything. There has not been any progress with my novel since last year; and although I have finished a big canvas which I worked on for two years (I won't add it here since it's heavily inspired by Dusk river by daRoz and I have no permission from the artist whatsoever), I mostly just practice on still life from time to time.

Since my camera literally crashed last November, I barely take photos (and cell camera is pure shit), so instead of hunting for best photos, I am hunting for results in my research. It takes time to isolate the DNA and RNA from tissue, and I am so exhausted afterwards that I cannot even finish my sketches for current paintings. However, the main theme for this year seems to be "mermaids" since I have three paintings in mind (with one partially underway). So, let's see if I can finish at least one of them before I leave for international scientific conference in Groningen, Holland.

Lusitania, 2018
oil on canvas, 50x90 cm (approx. 19.7x35.4 inches)

It took me almost eight months to return to this beautiful painting and try to finish it.
Although I used old photographs not exactly from 1915 as a reference, I like the black funnels. There is one theory, however, that they were repainted during the voyage in May 1915 after she left New York as RMS Lusitania was supposedly reported to have funnels painted in Cunard red while at the pier.

Also, the old photographs from the beggining of 20th century have this "problem" of depicting yellow and reddish funnels as pitch black while the black hull is somewhat lighter. This imperfection allowed me to fool around with indigo and olive green as I didn't use black on the ship itself, except for her portholes because indigo on indigo would be somewhat more foolish than white square on white background.

Winter, 2018
oil on canvas on board, 30x40 cm

I tried to recreate one of many lovely views I see almost every time when I'm wandering in the hills beyond the village with my dog. Quite a fair chance to encounter either a deer or a fox in these places, too.

You're welcome :D I'm starting to like modern poetry that's on DA. It's a way better than that we learnt about at school a long time ago (probably sometimes in the Stone Age) :D
