50 Hand Challenge Pack - 244 Hand References by SenshiStock 50 Hand Challenge Pack - 244 Hand References by SenshiStock
This is a ZIP file of 244 hand poses. This is being uploaded for general reference and for the 50 Foot, 50 Hand Challenge. Please check it out and consider participating!

This is mostly my drawing hand so there are some blisters and things. My right pinky has a tendon deformity that doesn't always allow me to extend it fully. Also, some of these images feature a double jointed thumb.

Thank you very much for replying. Apparently it was something in my browser cause I opened this page on incognito mode and it worked!
I was then able to download it normally!
I believe the problem is on my end then. Thanks again!

Thanks for providing these references :) I did 30 of them yesterday and already learned quite a lot for the next time I have to draw a hand or two :D
One question: Do you use the finger alphabet in those references?

I've noticed that so so SO many stock images, especially of hands or of people holding/using things in their hands, are taken from the point of view of the hand's owner. Just glancing at these - yup, here it is again.

[NOTE: This is not a criticism - it's an observation.]

I don't know why it is, and I've now searched thru thousands of references looking for what I need (not realising that there was so much great stuff here on DA; derp!) - and yup: that's been the biggest frustration.

Example - I wanted to show one of my characters holding a pen, and yes there were hundreds of images, but ALL were from the POV of the hand's owner. Well; almost all, by a factor of like 200 -to-1!!

All of them seem to be of the front (palm-side) of the hand. Almost none are ever taken from an external POV (viewed by an external observer as we naturally do as artists. we draw others, seldom ourselves).

I just don't get it? Why the massive bias?

Not expecting you to answer that, or solve it, but please take note of the bias, and see what you can do to provide artists with what they more-likely need.
Otherwise so many excellent images here. Thx!
Cheers!

Perhaps looking at some references in the gallery where I'm writing/drawing would help?

There's an impossible number of interations for a hand so I'm certain there can be more hand stock from me in the future.

Also, might be worth taking a quick shot of your own hand in a pinch, rather than searching and hoping to find something perfect. I do this frequently when I'm drawing.

Hope it goes well, happy art making!

I'll look for that gallery. Must have missed it on the first pass. (This is the first time I've searched hands *within* D.Art.)

Re my own hand - I have a huge mirror beside my desk, and it is invaluable for getting views of 'another person's' hand. Most notable use was in this work:
lookafar.deviantart.com/art/Sa…
where I needed a hand holding a hat (just *so*) and finally used my own hat as well!
As you say, "There's an impossible number of interations for a hand."
HELL YEAH!!

I'm also pleased with these little fists - modeled off my own dainty-boy hands: sta.sh/0suhlkcq9on

I'm glad you took my comment in good spirits.
Out of curiosity I suggest you run a Google Image search on hands doing various things. you'll see what I mean.

I shot all of these with a camera on a tripod and tried to do as many versions of things as I could, but there's definitely an opportunity for many more! Next time I do a hand shoot I'll try to remember poses that show the back of the hand more. Like poses of a person's back, it's sometimes something that's overlooked!

I agree with Lookafar (not to say your photos are bad when in actually lots are helpful!!). Lots of artist try to draw from an outsider pov than one's own and I also have difficulty looking for such poses of the hands. I really hope you'd make stocks for this kind. I look forward to it! Your stocks are great, thanks! ^^
