In 2014, the French Ministry of Defence launched a project to replace the FAMAS assault rifle then in French service. The Modular Rifle System was one of the weapons entered into the trials, produced by Industries de L'Etalon-Or, a relatively new independent French firearms company. Firing a standard 5.56x45mm full metal jacket round, the weapon took several design features from weapons used by the French special forces, namely the FN SCAR and the Heckler and Koch HK416. Intended to be used ambidextrously with ease, the weapon employs a conventional layout with controls made ambidextrous where possible.

The upper and lower receivers are constructed from 7075-T6 aluminium, with a hammer-forged polygon-rifled barrel (14.5 inches in the Light Standard configuration shown here) and a long-stroke tappet-actuated gas system similar to that of the FN SCAR. The rifle was intended to take advantage of equipment already procured by the French army such as the M203 grenade launcher, and thus no specific attachments were produced for the weapon. The weapon features a telescoping folding stock similar to that of the Ak 5C, with an added adjustable cheekrest.

The rifle shown here is the Light Standard variant, firing 5.56x45mm from a 14.5 inch barrel. The other produced variant is the Light Compact, with a shortened 10 inch barrel. Both variants feed from 30-round 4179 STANAG magazines.
