Travellers: The shape of her dreams

Journal Entry: Wed Aug 5, 2015, 1:22 AM
Your Title - version 2.0

She was as changeable as mountain weather. Her mind was full of sudden views and sudden precipices. When she wanted to withdraw she hid within a veil of cloud. When she closed her mind the chill was bitter. When the snow fell, the slopes were beautiful but deadly. When the ice began to melt, you had watch your step, because anything might fall and the streams were all in spate. And when lightning struck, it shattered rocks and souls.
To a traveller in her realm there was always interest, but even on a sunny day it was not without risks. A sudden squall could catch you basking on a crag, and your bones might not be found for years. Her moods were many, but when the sky was clear at night you could see to the limits of the universe.
An ancient traveller strolled into her realm. He had travelled far and seen many things, and he still had far to go and things to see, but he had seen the changing colours of the mountains from a great distance, and he wanted to know what was there.
At first she watched him from the heights to see what he would do, but then he made a spell of words and she went to find out what it meant.
She met him by a lake under a thin new crescent moon. She wore the darkness like a cloak. The crags were high, but she could fly and these were her mountains.
He caught the shapes of her dreams with words and showed them to her in a bowl of magic water that he carried with him. Sometimes he taught her the names of things that she had seen without knowing what they were. In return she gave him colours he hadn’t seen before and the gift of her smile.
Then one day, as she was prone to do, she went travelling. If you know where to look, on a clear night you can see her pass among the stars.
What happened to the traveller? No-one knows. His fate was hidden in the future. And all landscapes keep their secrets.

                                                                                                                                  By Robert Meadley

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 20, 2015, 5:02 AM
