Magnus and His Frostbite by sej Magnus and His Frostbite by sej
My poor poor Magnus has been frost bitten. It happened on the 14, well, the night of the 13 and I discovered him on the morning of the 14th. I noticed his wattles where dark and that his comb looked odd. The light in the coop isnt great so I touched his comb and it was frozen SOLID. Ive never felt anything so awful in my life. I just dropped evrything and scooped him up and brought him in the house. It took a good hour for his comb to thaw and then the color started to change. Uhg, my poor Magnus! In just a matter of hours it went from a fairly normal looking comb (if a little yellow) to an awful black. I've photographed him every day since so I can see how its changing. Its blistering now and getting some scabs. I like the scabbing, scabs mean good stuff underneath, usually. But the blisters....
When he first came in his wattles swelled up like balloons and they hurt him SO much. He coudlnt even move. Anywhere I set him down he would stay there untill I moved him again. Even hours later, he would still be sitting on his perch, not having moved even an inch. He was silent too. And he couldnt eat or drink unless I helped and even then he had such a hard time hes just give up. His wattles would get int he way and bump what ever the food or water was in and he would pop his head up and swing his head around. You could see how much it was hurting him. On the second day even his earlobes and eyelids swelled up. The eye swelling went down that day, but his ears stayed like sacks of water for a couple days.
Well, the swelling has bee gradually going down every day. And just 2 days ago I was awoken by him crowing!! I knew thent hat he MUST be feeling better. And each day since he has improved alot. The swelling is just about gone and he can eat, drink and preen again. Its SO nice to see him doing normal chicken things again. Hes dicided that his perch (which was an upsidedown piano bench) is BOOOR-IING! and now he roams around our two rooms. THough I love that hes doing better, him staying where ever I put him was awfully convenient! Now I have to watch out for poop everywhere!
Magnus also thinks that our bed is just the most awesome plapce to hang out. He spends nearly the whole day there. When I'm sleeping he likes to lay by my feet or perch on my hip. I love it. I mean, how many people get to experience a giant bird sleeping with them? Snuggling up to you (and the cats and dogs) on the bed?? Me likes. THough my poor bf, Shane, doesnt care much for the crowing and the pooping. I'm thinking a diaper would be great right about now!
One good thing about this all is that it was Magnuc who was frostbitten. Not that I would wish it on any of my babies. Magnus is the sweetest, most docile roo that we have. He the only one whos never bitten me! Actually hes never really shown any aggression towards me at all. I dont know how William would have gotten along in here. He attackes me every chance he gets! Id have to have built him a cage I guess. But Magnus is nice enough, even with the cats and dogs (This is the first time he actually seen dogs, come to think of it). If William or Harry where in here, loose, I'd be worried that while I sleep he would try to kick me or peck my eyes out!
This is a collage of his frostbite from the last 5 days. The first two are from the first day (his comb changed alot in the first hours, like I said) and the rest are from every day up till yesterday. I havent one from today yet. Hes still sleeping on the bed with Shane, heehee. I'll get some and repost this as the days go by.
