Members of the newly launched Nlian Defense Fleet going on maneuvers.

SHIPS
Defense ships were built by the Nlians for the purpose of protecting their homeworld,
outposts and trade routes.
While comparatively small to the ships of other species, they were fast, highly maneuverable
and heavily-armed.

Members of the Guardian class were the largest, most powerful and heavily armed ships that the Nlians ever built.
Their primary purpose was the defense of the Revla System (Nlian homeworld), but they always stood ready to assist other systems.

These were the equivalent of fighter planes and were usually assigned to a single system

At its height the Defense Fleet was comprised of thirty four ships and divided into 4 fleets.

The High Command was responsible for overseeing all military action in the Defense Fleet
It was made up of several High Commanders/Admirals
Each Fleet was under the command of a Fleet Commander (Admiral/Commodore)
Each ship was under the command of a Ship Commander (Captain)
A Squadron (6 flights of Interceptors) was under the command of a Squadron Commander (Commander)
A Flight (4 Interceptors) was under the command of a Flight Commander (Lieutenant)
COLORS
Like most Nlian vessels, Defense ships are brown and gold, the colors of the desert, the dominant geography of Nlia.
The ships are powered by Green Fire Nlia's most powerful energy substance
and thus the nacelles are green.
Green is also the color of the trees of the tiny but important Northern Continent
Blue has long been a symbol of both the sky and freedom.
Both Tkarites and Andorians trained the first members of the Fleet.
To honor their teachers, the Nlians added black and red Tkarite stripes on their ships, and blue stripes with Andorian symbols.
HISTORY
Nlia was a peaceful planet, with no armies prior to its entry into space in the early 21st century.
Early encounters with other species were peaceful, but through those encounters the Nlians first became aware of potentially hostile species (Romulans, Klingons, Orion Syndicate, etc)
While Nlia had long had a Planetary Security Force, charged with maintaining law and safety, they knew that they would be no match against a hostile attack from space. While not wanting to give up their peaceful ways, the Nlians heeded the advice of their wily neighbors, the Tkarites, who stated: ‘To not be prepared is to commit suicide.’
In 2169, the government formed the Defense Ministry/High Command .
The Nlian Defense Fleet was put together, with its first ships launched in 2173.
Since the Nlians had never had experience with warfare, they asked both Tkarite and Andorian instructors to help train the first members.
To honor their instructors they added both Tkarite and Andorian designs to their ships.
For thirty-seven years (2173-2210) the Defense Fleet protected Nlia.
At first it was comprised of only two Fleets, the Revla Fleet and the Norayis Fleet.)
In 2191 the Fleet was expanded to patrol the Ziyafa System and the Milora Nebula.
The Defense Fleet was most needed in 2200 when the Zeuna Outposts were attacked by pirates.
The Fleet successfully repelled the attack, although they suffered losses.
LATER HISTORY
Nlia joined the United Federation of Planets in 2210
Since then all Nlian military operations have been aided by Starfleet.
As an added safety measure Starbase Alpha was constructed in the Norayis System.
The sector is now always regularly patrolled by two Federation starships.
Despite this the High Command has been maintained, as have the ships of the Defense Fleet.
