What rendering engine are you using in Catia V5? I'm still playing with Mental Ray inside Pro/E but camera management is so bad I'm not going to work with it full time :) Anyway results are good, transparent plastic was better in 3dsmax though.

I'm using the Mentalray engine of the Photo Studio tool in CATIA. The tuning is awful...

The only "easy" cad-related rendering software I ever tried was Alias ImageStudio (now discontinued). It used Mental Ray and was dead easy to setup, it imported IGES and STEP files without tassellation (you could chose at the time of rendering the level of detail needed). It's too bad rendering engine are so poorly integrated in CAD packages, I'm waiting to see how Keyshot and CREO will work together...

I fell in love of the iRay engine in 3dsmax 2012.
I think it's the same engine as in CATIA V6

AFAIK iRay is the "progressive refinement" rendering engine from the same people that do Mental Ray, and is the engine now used in Bunkspeed Shot. It's a great engine, it should be implemented in Creo too as they are privileged partners, but I'm still waiting for this.
