❄️ Chapter 1 — Wrong Team, Right Truth
The boys’ locker room at Frostvale Academy always smelled like damp wool, cheap deodorant, and the kind of ego that bruised easier than skin. Tyler had learned to live with it — or at least endure it — but today the air felt heavier, like the walls themselves were tired of watching him get shoved around.
He kept his head down as he laced his boots, fingers moving with practiced precision. Skiing was the one place he felt in control. Everywhere else, he was just… small. Quiet. Easy to overlook.
“Move it, Tiny.”
Brock’s shoulder slammed into him, knocking Tyler sideways. His helmet slipped from his hands and clattered across the tile.
Mason snorted. “Careful, Brock. You’ll break him.”
Tyler bent to retrieve the helmet, jaw tight. He didn’t respond. He never did. Talking back only made things worse, and besides — what was the point? Brock and Mason were the stars of the boys’ ski team. Tyler was… well, Tyler.

The whistle echoed across the field, sharp and cheerful, followed by a burst of applause.
Harriet Wren flinched anyway.
She stood just behind Darla Whitfoot at the edge of the community sports grounds, notebook clutched to her chest, eyes darting between the bright banners, the temporary bleachers, and the organized chaos of the weekend youth athletics festival. There were families everywhere—laughing, cheering, arguing over snacks.
It felt loud...and busy.
It felt exactly like the sort of place where things went wrong quietly.
“Overstimulating?” Darla murmured, not looking at her.
Harriet nodded. “A little.”
“That’s okay,” Darla said. “That’s why we breathe and observe.”
Harriet took a careful breath and steadied herself. The problem had been reported that morning: several pieces of sports equipment had been tampered with. Nothing dangerous, thankfully—loosened straps, misaligned weights, a timing gate that stopped recording halfway through a race. Enough to disrupt events.
