Part 1 – The Bite
Dr. Emily Carter had chased legends before, but this one felt different.
A 32-year-old American herpetologist from California, she'd built her career debunking exaggerated claims - oversized anacondas, cryptic caimans, the usual cryptozoology noise.
But the whispers filtering through academic channels and local guide networks were persistent: sightings of enormous black tegus in the deepest reaches of the Brazilian Amazon. Salvator merianae, the Argentine black tegu, was already one of the largest lizards in South America, known specimens pushing five feet, but these reports described beasts twice that size, with heavier builds, prominent dorsal ridges and aggressive territorial behavior.
A possible undiscovered giant variant? Climate change driving rapid growth? Or just tall tales?
