(Story of Melissa) The Virus Part 1
Five minutes until detonation. It was almost time.
The canister sat inside the AC unit of Shelborne Heights Middle School, and it was ready to release its contents on not just the school, but the world.
You see, this was all planned, and it was certain to work. Inside the canister was a special gas containing a virus. The virus was a horrible one, created by a monstrous person named Samantha Roberts, the infamous criminal from statue city. If you know ger story, you will know that currently, she is frozen as a golden statue atop a fountain in Bea Hill’s mansion, forever stuck in her golden form.
However, before her defeat, she had created a backup plan. She created the virus in her lab, stuck it in a canister and began planning. The virus was not your ordinary virus. It was an airborne virus and could easily be contracted just by walking by someone who is infected. And you wouldn’t get sick when infected, oh no. The virus would enter your system, sit for a while, and then you would begin to turn to stone! The transformation would last only a few seconds. Then, when it was all said and done, and you stood a statue, you would never turn back. You would be stone for eternity.
Now Samantha’s plan was simple, place the virus in a school, let all the students and staff get infected, have them spread it to other children and adults, and it would be a ripple effect. She knew nobody would know who is and isn’t affected because the only sign of the virus was the transformation, and that happened anywhere from a few days to a week or two after exposure. By then, the number of people you would infect would be sky high. Scientists wouldn’t be able to study this virus, for getting anywhere near it would turn them to stone too. She had placed 5 canisters in each continent so the virus would spread worldwide quicker. It was a foolproof plan, and in just a few minutes the horror would be released on the world.
A few weeks later…
Athena and Melissa had the windows down and the music pumping. They were both very excited, they were about to go back to their hometown, and visit with Melissa’s old friends at their school, Shelborne Heights Middle School. Melissa was so excited to get to see her friends, they had so much to catch up on!
The Andromeda car pulled into the parking lot of the school, which was almost empty compared to what it normally was.
They hopped out of the car and walked towards the door. They noticed many staff members leaving the building, getting in their cars, and driving off.
As they walked towards the entrance of the school, they saw the principal of the school, Ms. Allison Crawford running out of the building, her black heels in hand as she shuffled her bare feet across the cobblestone path.
Ms. Crawford: Oh thank goodness, just the people I need, the Andromeda’s are here to save the day!
Athena: What’s going on Ms. Crawford?
Ms. Crawford: Its the students, they’re turning to stone left and right, my staff too! And I’ve even gotten calls saying the families of these folks are turning to stone too! It’s a nightmare!
Athena: What do you mean turning to stone? What’s causing it?
Ms. Crawford: I don’t know, one second I’m in a meeting with my vice principal, the next second she is screaming and I can only watch as she turns to a solid stone statue, and then when I go out to the hallway, I see a few students standing in the halls frozen solid, and its complete pandemonium.
Athena: That’s strange, can I go inside?
Ms. Crawford: I guess darling, but don’t say I didn’t warn you. I’ll show you what I mean.
Ms. Crawford dropped her heals and the three girls went inside.
In the front office alone there stood three statues, two adults and a child. They all shared similar expressions, faces of fear, of pain and suffering.
Athena: Oh, my goodness
Ms. Crawford: I know right, we just sent all the children home, and the police are coming tomorrow to investigate.
Melissa: Ms. Crawford, are my friends ok?
Ms. Crawford: Umm, I’m not entirely sure darling. We can go check on some, I do know that Ellie and Nora are statues, they were some of the first to turn.
Melissa: Oh no!
Melissa tried not to cry, and she only hoped that the rest of her friends were ok.
They walked to the classroom in which her friends had class, and they walked in to the sight of 6 statues, one of them being the teacher, Ms. Baker.
Melissa and Athena went in to check out the statues while Ms. Crawford stood in the doorway, tears rolling down her cheeks.
Melissa went up to the first statue of a young girl frozen in a pose that suggested she had been crying while the transformation occurred. It only took a glance at the statue for Melissa to burst into tears and collapse to the ground.
Melissa: Noooo!!! Not Amelia!!!
Athena went over to comfort her daughter, who cried for many more minutes.
Once she had taken the time to gather herself, Melissa stood up, tears still streaming down her cheeks. She went over to examine the other statues, and she knew immediately that it was the opposite of what she had hoped for. Three more of the statues were her other friends. And with that, it meant all six of her closest friends were all victims of this terrible curse. The last statue in the room was a random girl Melissa didn’t recognize.
Melissa: What could be doing this!
Athena: I don’t know sweetie. Ms. Crawford, do you have anything that could help us figure out what’s going on?
No response
Athena turned around to face the doorway where Ms. Crawford stood, and when Athena saw what stood there instead, she got very scared.
Athena: Melissa we need to get out, now!
Melissa: Why?
Athena: Look!
Melissa turned to look. There stood a gray stone figure in the doorway. It was Ms. Crawford, and she too had been turned to stone!
Melissa: I agree! Let’s go!
The two headed for the door, but found they were blocked by the statue of the principal. Carefully, the two laid the statue of Ms. Crawford down on the ground, and stepped over her.
Athena: Ms. Crawford, if you can hear me, we will get to the bottom of this, I promise.
And with that Athena and Melissa ran out of the school, got into the car, and sped off towards statue city.
If anyone could offer guidance on a situation like this, it was Bea Stone.
Bea Stone paced her office. The calls she was getting were troubling. She knew something was happening. Something bad, very bad.
It was the same worrying thing everywhere. Masses of people randomly turning to stone.
Bea had gotten calls from every part of the world. World leaders, scientists, everyone was very concerned, and Bea believed she knew what was going on, and what her hunch was concerned her even more.
Bea believed it to be a virus of some sort, but would need further testing. Just as she was about to call her head scientist, the doors to her office were knocked upon in a rather urgent knock.
Bea: Come in
The doors suddenly burst open and in came Athena and Melissa.
Athena: Bea!!! We need your help, back at home….
Bea: Let me guess, people randomly turning to stone?
Athena: Yes!!! How did you know?
Bea: It’s everywhere Athena, I’ve gotten calls and messages all day from leaders, principals, the police, everyone is begging for me to help them.
Athena: What could be doing this?
Bea: I have reason to believe it is a virus, but we need to do some testing quickly. I’m going to call up my best scientists to get on this immediately.
Bea went to hug her friends.
Bea: It is going to be alright. Now, I think we all need a break don’t we?
Athena: Very much so!
Bea: Alright here is what I’ll do for us, I’m gonna make the call to my scientists, and when I’m done, we will go to my private spa and relax there, sound good?
Athena: But why have a spa day when there is a virus circulating.
Bea: We are not scientists, there isn't much we can do right now except try and avoid it. Why not enjoy ourselves while we can.
Athena: I guess your right. Lets do it!
Bea made the call to her scientists, gave them her instructions and hung up. It was time to relax.
Bea left her office and met the girls out in the hallway.
Bea: Alright friends, lets head to my house!
At Bea’s mansion, Bea led the group to a room towards the back of the house. She opened the doors and inside was a beautiful spa.
Bea: Ladies, welcome to the chocolate spa!
Melissa: Chocolate Spa?
Bea: Yes darling, a chocolate spa. Chocolate has special soothing and healing properties! And Statue Supply Co has developed a special chocolate that turns people to chocolate statues!
Melissa: So, we get to be chocolate statues?
Bea: If you wish! Why don’t we get chocolate massages first, then chocolate foot rubs, then get our nails done, and finally take a dip in the chocolate tub which will turn us to chocolate. I can have the servants release us next week!
And so they each were guided to a massage table. They laid down on their respective tables and laid there for the next half hour, receiving the best massage they ever had received. Thick gooey chocolate was rubbed on their bodies, and its warmth made this an even more pleasurable experience.
After their body massages, the servants moved to foot massages. The chocolate was again applied to their feet, and Melissa couldn’t help but squish it between her toes. The massage was so relaxing and especially needed, for the girl’s feet were all very sore and tired from lots of recent hard work.
At the conclusion of their massages, each girl was moved to a salon chair and each received a special “chocolate” manicure and pedicure. Their nails were painted using a special brown colored polish that contained chocolate, to further the health benefits! And even though brown may not sound like a good look, the girls looked stunning with their new nails!
Finally it was time to take a dip in the chocolate tub!
Bea: Alright friends, now here are my instructions. First you will take off all your clothes, kind of embarrassing yes, but it won’t work if you don’t. Now next you will hop in the tub and fully, i emphasize fully, submerge yourself in the chocolate. Sit under there for a few seconds, then come up, get out immediately and take your pose. The chocolate will begin to harden very quickly so you only have a few seconds to pose before it gets hard to move. The chocolate will harden, and you will be a statue! My servants will release us next week! Sound good?
Athena and Melissa: Yes!
Bea: Alright, who wants to go first?
Melissa: I’ll go!
Bea: Ok, go ahead and remove your robes and hop in!
Melissa removes her robe and steps into the pool of thick chocolate.
Melissa: Ohh that feels so good
Bea: Good! So now completely submerge yourself and step out and pose!
Melissa sinks down below the surface of the thick brown pool, a few seconds later she pops out and is covered on chocolate. She quickly feels around for the edge and climbs out. She makes a pose quickly before the chocolate begins to harden. She is standing straight, her head tilted slightly to the side with a big grin on her face. Her hands are held in a heart in front of her chest. In just a matter of a fee seconds the shiny liquid chocolate that covered her quickly hardened into a dull brown shell.
Bea: How lovely!
Athena: Yes that looks fun!
Bea: Want to go next?
Athena: We should go together and pose together!
Bea: Ok!
Both women take off their clothes and step in
Bea: Ok how are we going to pose
Athena: I thought maybe we could hug Melissa, like one of us on each side smiling and hugging her!
Bea: I like that idea! Ready to go?
Athena: Yep!
Athena and Bea submerge themselves, step out and take their poses. Just seconds later they stiffen up and are chocolate statues just like Melissa.
The servants take the statues and move them to the entry of Bea’s mansion as a decoration. They will be unfrozen in a week by the servants.
For Melissa, Athena, and Bea it is a week of relaxation an escape from the world, but what will happen over the course of the next week will change the world forever, and they will unfreeze to a completely new, chaotic world, where they will be forced to fight for their lives. But for now, all is well.

Is Your Job Making You Fat?
If you’ve recently had a tailor let out your pants, you're not alone: 45% of workers say they've gained weight in their current job, according to new survey.
Are those cookies Bob keeps bringing to share at the office going right to your waistline? What about the annual influx of leftover treats at Halloween, or the homemade sugary gifts at the holidays? Don’t forget about the all-too-frequent office birthday cakes. Add all that eating to a lot of sitting around and being too tired or busy to work out, and it turns out our jobs can be bad for our BMI.

Future Shock [COMMISSION, EXTREME HEALTH ISSUES]
Prologue
It started started with the miracle of miracles, something so profound it revolutionized the world and drove countless scientists to madness and physicists to suicide: perpetual motion.
The first real and true perpetual motion machine turned everything upside down. Everything we knew about physics was wrong and the immediate aftermath was the end of the world’s energy crisis. Perpetual motion advanced so many things, it helped maintain Climate Change from getting any larger thanks to oil and fossil fuels becoming obsolete, although the effects it had inflicted still remained and there was a terraforming project being done on earth trying to fix things up and turn the climate back to normal.
The things we thought were impossible became reality and the things that were already fantastic became even more fantastical. We were able to go to mars and terraform it into a second earth. We have several ships in deep space thanks to mastering FTL travel. AI had advanced to the

The American Obesity Problem
I have no face. There was a time when I may have owned one, but this is a fuzzy half-memory. In fact, it may be entirely an invention of fantasy. These days, regardless of my history, I know for a fact that I have no face. However, I have been granted a name: The American Obesity Problem. And I am growing in the United States. You may have seen me on television. You may have been witness to my disconcerting back cleavage and mystified by the seamless transition my legs make from my calves into my ankles. You probably saw my unsettlingly large, shelf-like behind as it strained against my tight Capri pants that I swore I would fi

As a junior in college Lexi was looking for work studies to complete her mandatory college credit requirements as a social worker. While her field of study was hard to find internships in behavioral science, she had always set participating in case studies on the back-burner as she felt it wouldn’t benefit her as greatly in her own studies compared to being on the administrative side of the experiment. With time winding down before she had to make a definitive decision for Fall Semester courses, she visited the campus lab to scour the public case study listings in a ditch effort.
On a wall covered in fliers, one freshly printed page tacked on top caught her eye.

You finally got to stand on your feet. It took an extreme amount of effort, and you can hardly keep your balance, but you did it. You don’t know when last you stood on your own two feet, it was hard to keep track of time while being stuck in a room for so long. Being fed whatever she brought, whether you were willing on not. How much food she’d bring and how forceful she’d be was completely based on her mood, and as of late, she was in a very bad mood. She’d enter the room with enough food to feed a family and stuff everything down your throat while complaining about her work until there was no food left and she was satisfied. By the end of it leaving the room, turning the lights off, and locking the door. Leaving you in the dark on that two-person bed you’d grown so used to.
This had been the cause of your now comically large body. Legs so large that your thighs were always touching, a belly
