Zoe's rebirth: when dreams come true
Introduction Zoe's Rebirth: When Dreams Come True Zoe is a very good and intelligent girl, always at the top of her class. Her boyfriend, Tom, is the captain of the basketball team, and he's charming, athletic, and attractive. In short, Zoe's life has always been perfect until problems began at home. Her parents weren't getting along and decided to divorce, but she, with her charming ways, suggested they all go on a trip together so they could clarify their ideas and calmly consider their decisions. But something goes wrong during the trip, and they start arguing again in the car, and they all end up hit by a tire. Unfortunately, they die, and Zoe is left paralyzed. There's nothing that can be done to help her walk again, the doctors say, but she never loses hope and decides, with a researcher who works at the hospital, to test a backpack-shaped machine that stimulates the spine and thus helps her move normally. Zoe has a dream in life: to become a researcher who helps people and saves them from many chronic diseases that can have fatal consequences. Zoe will be able to feel her dream. All of this is in the series "Zoe's Rebirth: When Dreams Come True."
Part One: A Life So Perfect Chapter 1
New Jersey
Monday, 7:50 AM
"Zoe! Are you ready, darling?"
"Yes, I'm ready, Mom! Actually, I have to run, or I'll be late for school."
"Wait! Zoe, I have to give you something."
"Mom! It's late!"
"This is your lunch! I made it for you with my own hands."
"Oh! Thanks, Mom! See you later, okay?"
"See you later, darling! And have a good class!" She kisses me on the head.
And so my week begins.
I run to the school bus that takes me to the great science high school in New Jersey.
I'm a huge science enthusiast and would like to further my research on chronic diseases and find a cure for them. That's my dream.
This morning we have two classes: natural sciences and math.
The science teacher enters the classroom with our test sheets from last week.
"Good morning everyone! Now we're starting our lesson on the nervous system. We'll do some experiments on mice as a test, but first I'll hand out your homework from last week."
The teacher walked around with the leaves until she reached me.
"Congratulations, Zoe! You were very good, and I really liked your points about how to treat brain diseases in children born with learning disabilities."
"Thank you so much, teacher."
"Now let's continue our lesson."
************************
When break time came, I decided to do my research in the high school library. I was browsing through the books on the shelves, and I felt like touching them all and reading them one by one.
"Zoe! Honey! But you always have to be there reading!" Tom says as he comes toward me.
"Tom! I'm sorry, but I have some research to do."
"You forgot something important!
Today was the basketball semifinal game! I was waiting for you to come cheer me on!"
"Oh! Honey! I'm sorry! I completely forgot!" I give him a gentle kiss on the cheek.
"Now just finish that page you're holding, then meet me in the basketball room.
I have a surprise for you! Please come over, I'll be waiting," Tom says.
"Of course, honey! Give me a moment and I'll join you."
Chapter 2
New Jersey High School
Hand in hand, I follow Tom, who has already covered my eyes with a bandana.
“Tom! Tell me where are you taking me?”
“It’s a surprise, honey, so don’t worry and relax!”
He leads me to the end, then a moment later he takes off my bandana.
“Surprise!” The lights come on and I see all my high school classmates and friends, along with all the teachers and the principal.
“Happy birthday to our number one student! Happy birthday, Zoe!” They brought me a beautiful cake.
The room is decorated with ribbons.
I’m breathless, I’m moved.
“Thank you everyone! I’m speechless! I don’t know what to say! Thank you so much!”
Tom gives me a big hug and then we celebrate.
*********************
It’s 6:30 in the afternoon, my school day is over, but I still have a couple of projects to do and my homework is completed.
I walk home
"Honey! You're welcome back."
My mom comes towards me in a tight hug. She had a sad look on her face. It seems strange to see her like that.
"Rachele! She just came in! Let her breathe," my dad said.
"I know when I need to talk to my daughter, John!"
"Are you okay, mom?" I ask.
"Zoe! You and I, mom, have something to tell you." This time, my dad speaks. My mom looks at him strangely.
"What happened? Don't make me worry!"
"Zoe, your mom and I weren't getting along as well as we used to, and that's why we decided to separate. But that doesn't mean you won't see each other again; we'll still see each other."
"No! Please don't do this to me on my birthday!"
A deep silence falls.
"Darling! I'm sorry! We've forgotten this important moment in your life too," says my father.
"And I forgive you for forgetting it! But on one condition! You stay together for this week! I know I'm asking you something hard this weekend. I suggest we all go to the mountains to celebrate and get a change of scenery!
And then you can think about your decision calmly! Is that okay with you?"
"That sounds like a great idea!" says my mother.
We look at each other with knowing glances.
Chapter 3
New Jersey
Saturday
9:00 AM
"Zoe! Have you finished packing your bags?"
And my dad was calling me from upstairs.
"Yes, Dad, I'm almost ready!
I'll be down soon."
The week flew by and was full of satisfaction.
Tom won the basketball championship final, and I entered a science competition at my school and was chosen among the top students. Tom and I went to celebrate at a nice, simple restaurant in downtown New Jersey. We spent a wonderful evening in the company of Beethoven's beautiful music.
*********************
And today was the big day for our trip, and my parents had been calm all week, which gives me so much hope that things between them will get back on track.
I got dressed quickly:
A simple white shirt with a pair of regular jeans.
I was just about to go downstairs when I received a video call on my phone. It was from Tom.
"No! Not right now," I said to myself.
I pressed the answer button.
"Tom! Love!"
"Good morning, love! You're ready! I just called to say hello and wish you a safe trip."
"Oh! Tom! Thanks so much for your kind words."
"How's your family? Is everything
OK?"
"Yes, thank you! It seems like things are settling down!"
"Zoe! Mommy's love! We're waiting for you! Your dad has already started packing the bags in the car!" says Mom.
"Love! I'm sorry, but I have to ask for the call! We'll talk again."
"Okay! Relax and enjoy your vacation! A big kiss! I love you!"
"I love you so much, too!"
And so I hung up the call
And I run quickly with my suitcase in hand.
"Here I am! I'm ready!" I tell my parents, who were already waiting outside in the yard.
******************
We're heading towards California. I opened my window, and I could feel the fresh mountain air. The radio was playing a Blue Brothers song.
"Is everything okay back?" my dad asks.
"Yes, Dad, it feels nice and fresh."
"Honey! Fasten your seatbelt tightly, we're going through a slippery area," my mom says.
We started climbing towards the mountain.
The music on the radio was interrupted by a reporter.
"Red alert on the California border! Severe thunderstorm forecast, possibly even thunderstorms," the reporter announces.
"Oh no! What do we do now, John? We can't risk it! We have to find a way to get back."
"What are you saying, Rachel? We're here now, we have to continue on our way!"
The rainstorm begins.
"Dad! What are we going to do now?"
"Let's go ahead, Zoe! I'll turn on the GPS so it shows us the safest route."
My father turns on the GPS from his phone.
"Go straight for three hundred meters, then turn left."
We follow the GPS instructions but enter a dead-end road.
"John! Are you sure this is the right road? We're going into a dead-end."
"Shut up, Rachel! You think you know more than I do!
Why don't you drive the car for me? Let's see if you can handle it," my father says angrily.
"Dad! Mom! Please stop! And try to stay calm."
"I knew it wasn't a good idea to come here!" my mother said.
My father made a sharp turn in the car at the end of the road to go back, but there was a very large truck going the opposite direction.
With the heavy rain, we couldn't see it, but it's too late now.
"Dad, be careful! I see something coming!"
"John! It's a truck! Do something! Now!"
"Don't give me orders..."
As he was about to turn the car, the truck hit him.
After that, everything went dark.
The only thing I remember from here afterward is being unconscious in a freezing room.
Chapter 4
"Ladies and gentlemen, today is the big day. The time has come for our university students, our doctors of the future, to receive their doctoral degrees and thus their rankings of those who will be rewarded according to their rank."
I was sitting in the front row waiting for my turn. I was actually completely excited, especially after presenting my thesis on my scientific research on chronic diseases, and particularly on proposing a mild yet effective cancer treatment that has no side effects on a person's health.
My parents and my fiancé were sitting next to me, all looking at me with happy and proud smiles.
"Your theses were very interesting. I'm sure you will have a wonderful future, that you will all be good doctors.
And now he announced the results.
The first-degree doctorate goes... to our prodigious student... ZOE MCCAIN!!!"
A huge round of applause filled the entire room.
My legs felt heavy and I couldn't even move them to get on stage. My voice was faltering with excitement.
"Zoe! Dear! Come on! Get up!" my mom urged me.
"Zoe! Come on!" my dad said.
"Honey! You're number one! We're all with you!" Tom said.
"Finally, I managed to conquer myself and went up on stage.
"Here you are again, Zoe! We've been waiting for you! Your thesis was a great success, and we'd be grateful to reimburse your project. We'll make it a reality. Here's your gold medal and your certificate. Do you have anything to say to your friends and family about this opportunity, Zoe?"
She passes me the microphone.
"Yes, I want to thank everyone here, especially my parents who supported me and my boyfriend who always believed in me. I hope my project becomes a reality."
"Thank you so much, Zoe! Now let's move on to the other rankings..."
*****************************
The ceremony is over.
And the celebrations have begun.
"Zoe! Dear! Please know that your dad and I are so proud of you! Congratulations!"
"Thank you, Mom! I love you more than anything in the world."
Then we melt into a tight hug.
My dad joins us.
"Zoe! Love! I have something to tell you!"
We break our embrace at Tom's voice.
"Tell me, Love?" I reply.
"I want to take advantage of your parents being here for this important moment in our lives..."
And he kneels before me, pulling out a small golden box and giving it to me. I will begin to open it.
"Oh! Tom! I'm speechless!"
"Love! Do you want to marry me and share every moment of life with me?"
"Yess ..."I reply by jumping on his neck.
At that moment, I began to hear a female voice calling me from afar.
"Zoe! It's your Aunt Marta! Please wake up, dear!"
I opened my eyes; it was just a dream.
It seems like I'm in the hospital.
Chapter 5
"Aunt Marta? What happened? What am I doing here? Where are Mom and Dad?"
"My dear, there was a car accident while you were on your way to California. Don't you remember anything, dear?"
"No, no, I remember nothing. The only thing that comes to mind is when we were about to leave for our trip. I don't remember anything else, I'm sorry."
Aunt Marta is my mom's older sister. She was always there for our family in every situation, she was always a great support to us.
"Zoe! I have something for you! Your parents gave it to me."
"What is it, Aunt?"
She shows me a small picture.
"It's a photo of you two. You were little, you were eight years old in the photo. Your parents have been hiding it in the memory box all this time."
She gives me the picture.
I take it, but my hands are shaking and I'm afraid I'll break it.
"Aunt, something's wrong with me. I can't feel my legs and my hands are shaking."
"Don't worry, dear! I think it's the effect of the anesthesia from the operation they performed on you."
"What operation? And what did they operate on?" I ask.
A noise is heard; someone opens the door, and a doctor comes in.
"Mrs. Spielberg, we need your help for a moment!" he says to his aunt.
"I'm coming! Give me a moment!" his aunt replies.
"Doctor! Can I ask you a question?"
"Afterwards, young lady, first I have to speak to your aunt."
"Don't worry, dear! I'll be back in a moment."
My aunt reassured me.
They've left the room; I can hear them talking, but I can't understand anything they're saying.
I look at the little picture that was on my bed, I look at the photo in the frame, and memories come to mind. When I did my first show at school, I had the band with rabbit ears; that was my role in the Alice in Wonderland rerun.
It was so much fun.
I try to hold the picture, but it almost slips out of my hand.
When I see a piece of paper stuck to the edge of the picture,
I pull at the paper with my shaking hand.
And a letter from my parents:
Dear Zoe
Happy twenty-third anniversary, darling, you've surely grown into a beautiful young lady. We hope all the best in the world for you, my love. I would have definitely finished your doctoral thesis. We hope everything went well, and that you've fulfilled your dream of becoming the most famous medical researcher in America and the world.
Know that we will always be by your side, wherever we are. We love you. A big hug.
Mom and Dad
"Mom, Dad, I promise I'll do everything I can to make my dream come true.
You'll always be proud, wherever you are."
My aunt enters the room with the doctor.
My aunt's eyes were sad.
"I'm paralyzed, isn't it? I've noticed that my nervous system isn't sending instructions to my brain like it used to," I told the doctor.
"Yes, unfortunately, that's how it went," he said.
"In this world, I've learned that there's always a solution to every problem, so I'll find the solution and be able to move forward."
My aunt nods, fighting back tears.
"I'll do it, Aunt! I promise!"
He reassured her.
Chapter 6
The days go by, and every day they make me try a new therapy: one day Baclofen, another Tizanidine.
I have physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy twice a day, and more, plus they give me botulinum toxin injections.
And so my days go by.
But I never give up hope.
Today I woke up at 7:00 in the morning. My aunt was sleeping on the couch next to my bed. I look at her tired face.
"We'll make it! Aunt, I promise!" I say to myself.
The nurse comes in with the breakfast tray.
"Here I am, dear Zoe! Breakfast is ready."
"Thank you so much, Matilde! You're so sweet!"
"You're welcome, dear! And don't forget your medication!" She hands me a small box containing the Tizanidine tablets.
"At your command, ma'am!" I say jokingly, raising my hand in a military gesture.
Matilde leaves the room with a smile on her face.
Breakfast was all cereal and protein.
I start eating but am interrupted by a video call on my phone. I pick it up and look at the screen.
It's Jessica, my best friend and classmate.
I press the answer button.
"Look, I can see it! Bye, my dear!"
"Hi, Jessy! Nice to hear from you!
Tell me how things are going at your place? I'm curious to know!"
"It's wonderful, but we still miss someone important.
Really! When are you planning on going back to school, Zoe! We miss you so much!"
Jessy says.
"Actually, I'm still undergoing treatment, hoping it'll be effective, but I'll be back with you soon! Don't worry, Jessy!
Do you have any news about Tom?
I don't understand why, but he hasn't been in touch since we said goodbye before the trip?"
"Tom is doing well and very happy because he won another basketball game, actually, the basketball tournament this time! And I can pass him over nearby if you want!"
"Wow! I'm so happy for him! Yes, of course, pass him on, but first, can I ask you a favor? If you could bring me all the lessons and homework that were done in my absence, I'd be very grateful!"
"Of course I'll bring him! I'll stop by tomorrow morning! But for now, I'll let you talk to your favorite champion!"
"Thank you so much, Jessy."
Tom passes me, but he seems to be looking through his phone screen.
"Tom! Are you there? Tom? Hi, love! Can you hear me?"
"Zoe! I can't hear you anymore! I'm sorry, but I have to end the call because the screen isn't very clear and I can't hear you."
"Tom! Wait!"
But it's too late now because he's already hung up.
I'm starting to suspect something strange.
Chapter 7
Zoe, dear, are you okay? I heard you were talking to someone on the phone.”
And my aunt must have woken up while I was talking to Jessica.
“Don't worry, Aunt! I'm fine, I was just talking to my classmate Jessy. I asked him if he could drop off my lessons and homework.”
“Okay, dear! But weren't you supposed to be resting? Calm down and rest for now, I need it.”
“No, aunt! Being so still makes me think of so many bad thoughts. I'd rather fill my time studying.”
“How are you feeling, dear!” my aunt replies.
“Excuse me! Can I interrupt your conversation for a moment?”
The doctor appears from the doorway.
“Doctor! Do you have any news for me?” I ask.
“Actually, yes, but it's not about the effect of your treatment right now, but something completely different.”
“What do you mean, doctor?”
My aunt asks.
"I'm curious to know what it's about," I said.
"We tried to contact a very famous research doctor in North America, his name is Gerard Norway. This man invented a backpack-shaped machine that stimulates the spinal column by acting on the nervous system, allowing Zoe to walk again and live her normal life as before, until we find a cure for her."
"I can't wait to try it," I snapped out of it.
"How much will it cost?" my aunt asks.
"Aunt! It doesn't matter how much? What matters is that you find a temporary solution to my problem."
"Your niece is right, madam! I invite you to think about this opportunity."
"All right, doctor! But I just wanted to know how long it will take you to come here to see Zoe?"
"It's already done, madam! He'll be here with you in two days! I've already told him something about Zoe's case."
"Finally! I can go back to school!” I say with a sigh of relief.
But Tom's last gesture comes to mind, and my thoughts immediately come flooding back.
Chapter 8
Time passes slowly, but I try to keep busy.
My hands aren't shaking like they used to, but I still can't get up normally.
My aunt left a while ago to run some errands.
It's 6:00 PM.
Carol, the nurse, came to do my physical therapy, and for the second time today, she massaged my legs, moving them in a gentle, up-down motion.
She also massaged my feet.
"How are you feeling, Zoe? If I'm hurting you, tell me."
"No! Darling! You're not hurting me! Don't worry."
She stayed there massaging me for another ten minutes.
"There we are, my dear! Matilde will be here soon with dinner and therapy."
"Thank you so much, Carol!"
"You're welcome, dear! Oh! I forgot to give you something! I found this book on the shelves in our library, I decided to bring it to you, thinking you'll like it!"
I look at the title:
"Chronic Diseases in Children and How to Treat Them"
"Thank you so much, Carol! This is exactly the book I was looking for!"
"You're welcome, dear! Enjoy your reading!"
Carol waves her hand at me as she leaves the room.
I can't wait to start reading this book.
But first I want to try to hear from Tom again. I pick up the phone and start the call. The phone starts ringing, but suddenly someone ends the call.
It seems Tom is busy and doesn't have time to answer me.
Oh well, never mind.
I start reading my new book until Matilda arrives with the dinner tray.
And as I read the book, she began to jot down the information I needed for my research.
"Zoe, my dear! Here I am! I'm here!"
"Welcome back, Aunt! I was just reading a very interesting book Carol gave me!"
"And I brought you something you really like!"
They were my favorite chocolates.
"Oh! Aunt! How did you know I like these chocolates?"
"Your mom told me all about you, my dear!"
"Thank you so much, Aunt! I'll tell Mathilde to keep them in the refrigerator."
"Someone called me!" Mathilde appeared at the door.
"It's 7:00 PM, and it's time for dinner, my dear,"
Mathilde said.
Chapter 9
Tomorrow is the big day; Dr. Gerard is coming to visit me.
This morning, Jessica dropped off the lessons and homework.
"Here I am, my friend! I brought you all your homework and lessons! Actually, there wasn't much homework while you were away."
"Thank you so much, Jessy, you've always been such a great support to me!"
"You're welcome! We decided to have a whole day of silence at school for you, and it was all directed by the principal.
We're so sorry about you and we hope you'll come back soon."
"I can't wait, too, dear Jessy! I miss you so much! It's just that Tom's behavior seems strange to me. I've been trying to contact him for a long time, but he seems to be avoiding any contact with me! Do you know anything about this, Jessy?"
"Actually, ever since the accident, Tom has been so withdrawn, he doesn't talk to anyone and is always alone.
But I think he'll get over this, too, as soon as he sees you at school again. You'll see how he'll be back to normal."
"I hope so too, Jessy! Anyway, send him my regards when you see him."
The fact that Jesse is the cheerleader for the basketball team makes her the person Tom sees most often, which is why I thought I'd ask her about his news.
While Jessie was at my place, the doctor suddenly showed up.
"I'm sorry to interrupt your visit, Miss, but I need to speak to Miss Zoe in private," the doctor says.
"It's okay, Doctor. I'll say goodbye to Zoe and hope to see you again soon!" He gives me a kiss on the cheek.
"Thank you so much, Jessy! See you soon! And I'm sorry again!"
Jessy blows me a kiss and leaves my room.
"Doctor, is there anything new?" I ask him.
"I have a big surprise for you, Zoe!
Doctor! You may come in!"
He ushered in a tall, young doctor in his thirties with light blond hair.
"Good morning, Miss Zoe! I'm Dr. Gerard Norway! And it's a pleasure to meet you!"
I'm speechless with surprise.
Chapter 10
"It's a big surprise, Doctor!"
Dr. Gerard greets me with a handshake.
I'm fascinated by the young researcher and his determined gaze.
"Dr. Gerard Norway earned his master's degrees in both medicine and biology, and I'm best known for his degree in biotechnology, which earned him his doctorate. His thesis was "how to enable paralyzed people to walk again," inventing a biotechnological device that stimulates the spine and acts on the nervous and immune systems, providing strength. All with magnetic waves that the backpack sends to the spine."
The doctor gave a presentation to medical researcher Gerard Norway.
"I find your presentation very surprising, Doctor, especially considering that Dr. Gerard is quite young, and this is a source of great admiration for his progress."
"Thank you, Miss," said Dr. Gerard. "And now let's get to our topic. We want to perform the first scientific test of the backpack on you, so we can see how your body will react to the new device. Then, if you accept it positively, we'll continue with the rest of our experiment."
"Thank you so much, doctor, and I can't wait to try it. I have so many academic projects lined up and a future waiting for me, realizing a dream of mine."
"It's still too early to thank me, miss, but we promise you'll return to school and study soon. From what your doctor told me, you're currently undergoing many treatments for your paralysis. We hope to find the right treatment for you and that you'll be able to walk again. For now, we'll try the multi-stimulator backpack.
But I'm curious to know something from you, Miss McCain. A little bird told me you're very passionate about natural sciences, and specifically the world of medicine. What dream would you most like to realize in the future?"
"I like your curiosity, doctor. Just call me Zoe!"
"Okay, Zoe! Tell me a little about yourself."
"Actually, my big dream is to become a medical researcher just like you, Doctor, and I want to find a cure for all chronic diseases, both in children and adults.
This way, I will combat any possibility of cancer or other similar chronic diseases for all human beings!"
"Very interesting, Zoe! I hope you achieve your goal as soon as possible."
"Thank you so much, Doctor. Your determination in your work is a great inspiration to me, Doctor. I hope to follow in your footsteps."
"Coming from you, Zoe! It's a great honor and pleasure for me to help you! And just call me Gerard."
Our conversation is interrupted by the voice of Nurse Matilde.
"Excuse me, hello, Doctor! I just have to administer the treatment to the girl."
You're welcome, Matilde. In the meantime, I'll see you later with the young lady for the tests.
"I can't wait!" I say excitedly.
"Zoe! My dear, your aunt was waiting outside too!"
"Let her in, Mathilde."
Mathilde opens the door.
"Madam! You may come in!"
"Hi, aunt! I'm so happy!"
"Hi, darling! I saw the doctor pass by with a young doctor. I think he's Doctor Gerard! It was a wonderful surprise! I'm so happy for you."
My aunt places a bouquet of flowers in front of me while she's trying to arrange it in the vase. Mathilde is waving goodbye.
"I'll be back in a couple of hours, dear! Have a good rest."
"Thank you so much!"
Mathilde exits.
"Aunt! Who sent these beautiful flowers?"
They were red roses.
My aunt pulls out the card that was attached to the rock and gives it to me.
I look at the card. It says:
"I loved you so much!"
Tom
I'm left with bated breath.
"Who was he?" my aunt asks me.
"And Tom!" I said.
Chapter 11
They've started doing the first experimental tests with the backpack on me, and it seems like my body is acting normally with it, as if it were a piece of myself. With the rotating button on the end of the backpack, you can control the amount of force transmitted to my body.
Dr. Gerard is so pleased with the results that the doctors have even decided to release me from the hospital.
I need to come back every now and then to see how the therapy is going and its effect on me. I hope I can walk normally and independently again.
I'm preparing my books for tomorrow's classes; I've already done all my homework and learned all the lessons Jessy brought me.
I'm actually very happy to get back to my usual routine, but I'm nervous about seeing Tom; I'm worried about his reaction to seeing me in my current state.
"Zoe! Dear! Do you want to come keep me company? I'm making your favorite dish, lasagna with meat sauce."
"Of course, Auntie! I'm coming."
I ran down to the kitchen, a strange feeling of movement washes over me, as if it wasn't me running, but everything was mechanical.
"Auntie! Leave it to me! I'll give you a hand!"
She began filling baked pasta sheets with ragù, adding either béchamel or grated cheese, and topping them with the slices of cheese.
Auntie handed me the ingredients.
"Thank you, dear! You've been a great help!"
"You're welcome, Auntie Marta, you're like a mother to me! You took care of me the whole time, I can't find the words to thank you!"
We covered the container with foil and put it in the oven, and while we waited, we had a lovely chat.
"Aunt! She says everything will be fine at school!
Actually, I'm worried about Tom's reaction!"
"No, dear, you have to calm down! Tom has always loved you; your bond is so strong that it can't be broken easily."
"You mean, Aunt?"
"Of course! In life, love knows no obstacles! Put that in your mind, my dear!" she reassures me, giving me a kiss on the head.
That evening, after eating, I went to bed to read the book Carol gave me on chronic diseases, taking note of the information I need for my research.
Chapter 12
It's my long-awaited day, today, and my return to school. I got up early this morning, got dressed with my aunt's help, had a quick breakfast, and around 7:30 I ran to the bus with my books in hand.
When I arrived at the high school, the principal was standing near the entrance with my classmates and some teachers.
"Welcome back, Zoe!" said the principal.
"Thank you, sir."
We started chemistry and math lessons, then we broke for lunch.
I was looking for my friend Jessy in the cafeteria, but there was no sign of her or Tom.
I'm having strange doubts, hoping they're both okay.
After lunch, I stopped at the library to do some research. This time, it was an assignment to study the cause of human paralysis, using animals, especially mice, as an example. I took advantage of this research to delve deeper into my own case.
The afternoon ended with a biology and humanities lesson.
Afterward, there was a small welcome party for me in the sports hall.
I took the opportunity to ask a player on Tom's basketball team.
"Hi! Mike! How are you? I'm curious to see how your practice is going."
"Hi Zoe! Welcome back! Everything okay? Yes, practice is going great! We're ready to make it through another tournament!"
"I'm so happy for you, Mike! I'm doing great! But I'm actually here to ask you about Tom! Do you happen to know where? He hasn't answered me for days, and I'm worried!"
"Tom was actually upset because he told us you broke up and now he's with Jessica. Those two seem totally in love, and I hope it ends better than last time..."
He hadn't finished his speech when I stopped him with a wave of my hand.
"What are you saying, Mike! Impossible! I never abandoned Tom, but it was the other way around! Then with Jessy! My best friend! That's absurd!"
"I'm sorry, Zoe! I think I was wrong to tell you these things! I have to go!"
"You weren't wrong, Mike! And it's not your fault!" a familiar voice speaks and I hear footsteps coming toward us. I turned around and it was Jessica.
"Jessica! How could you do this to me!"
"Zoe! Welcome back! We'd better go and clear this up between us, if you like! The front room is open! It would be a more peaceful place to discuss it."
"All right! Let's hear his apology!"
He takes me to the empty classroom next door and I lock myself in.
"Why did you close the door? Are you afraid you're hiding something?" I asked him.
"You're the one hiding something, my love!"
Tom surprises me from behind.
"What's that backpack you're wearing, Zoe? It looks like some new technology," Jessica asked me.
"So you guys care about my backpack! Traitors!" I said to him.
Tom stops me with a brusque gesture as Jessy throws the backpack off my shoulders. I fall to the floor.
"How nice! I want to try it too!"
Jessica says with a wicked smile.
"Give it back!" I shout after him.
"That's why we broke up, dear Zoe! And why I'm tired of being with a loser like you! But with Jessy, everything is different. I feel feelings I've never been able to feel with a robot like you."
"Your glory days are over, Zoe!"
Jessy says, and they both leave the classroom, carrying my backpack. Jessica couldn't stop laughing evilly.
"Come back! My backpack!"
I limp through the door but find a cell phone that's fallen on the floor.
And my cell phone.
I look for my aunt's number on my cell phone and quickly press the call button.
The phone rings and then the call is made.
"Aunt! Please help me! Come get me right away! My backpack was stolen! Please, aunt, come right away! I'm in the high school's natural sciences lab!"
"Zoe! It's Gerard Norway! Who stole your backpack? Don't worry, okay, I'll come get you right away!"
I'm left breathless.
I've called the wrong person.
Chapter 13
Dr. Gerard came straight to the high school with his aunt and headed straight for the natural sciences classroom.
"Zoe! Are you here, dear? Answer me?"
It was my aunt's voice.
"Aunt! I'm here! Please let me out!"
"Zoe! I'm Doctor Norway! I'm here with your aunt! We're trying to open the door, but it looks like it's locked!"
"It's Tom and Jessica who locked me in! Then they made fun of me and stole my backpack!"
"So it was Tom! But how could he do something like that?" my aunt wondered.
"Call security, they might find a way to open the door!" I said.
"Zoe! I'm going to the principal right now to ask for help, so we can get you out of here!"
The aunt says and runs toward the principal's room.
Aunt immediately returns with the principal, a spare set of keys in hand, and they open the door to the living room.
"Aunt! I'm so happy to see you again!" I say, tears in my eyes.
My aunt hugs me tightly.
I see they've brought a wheelchair with them. Doctor Gerard puts me in it.
"Zoe! I'm sorry about Tom and Jessica's inappropriate behavior! We'll try to find them as soon as possible and get your backpack back from them! Those concerned will be suspended until the end of the school year," says the principal.
"Sir! I'll help you with your search! If our invention falls into the wrong hands, it could have serious consequences," says Doctor Gerard.
"Of course, doctor, let's start looking for them."
And they go off to look for Tom and Jessica while I stay with my aunt.
"I want to report them!"
The aunt said
"No, aunt! Forget it! It's not worth it!"
"Don't worry, dear Zoe! Let's go home now!"
The natural sciences teacher also witnessed the scene, and he was sorry.
"Zoe! You know what I mean? I'm sorry about everything!" said the teacher.
"Don't worry, teacher! We'll make it! Or not, aunt!"
"Of course, dear!" said the aunt.
"If you want, I'll take you home! I'm available; the car is parked in a recyclable area that's easy to get to."
"All right, sir! You're doing us a great favor! Thank you so much!" said the aunt.
"You're welcome! Zoe is our star student, and I really want to encourage her on her journey! Be strong, Zoe! We're counting on you!"
"Thank you so much, teacher! I won't disappoint you, rest assured!"
***********************
An hour and a half has passed since we got home.
"Tom betrayed me, Aunt! But I'm closing this chapter and starting a new life!"
"Good job, my dear! You always have to move forward in life."
I was in the living room reading a book and Aunt was ironing clothes next to me when the doorbell rang.
"I'll be right there, dear! I'll go see who it is."
"Of course, Aunt! Don't worry!"
Aunt looks through the cameras installed on the door.
"It's Doctor Gerard!"
"April, Aunt!"
Aunt opens the door and lets him in.
"Doctor! Do you have any news?"
"Yes! We finally managed to track down the boy and stop him in time. He was trying to steal from a medical center near the high school.
He was wearing his backpack. It seems he had regulated the movement of the backpack, and this gave him some sort of supernatural strength. We had to call the police to subdue him.
His accomplice and classmate were waiting for him outside, but we managed to nab her too."
"Tom caused all this mess! I'm sorry about everything, doctor."
"Don't worry, Zoe! It always happens like this when things fall into the wrong hands! I've brought you the backpack now! I'll give it back to you!"
"Are you sure it's the right decision for me to keep the backpack? And it's happening like last time?"
"I trust you, Zoe! And I know you'll be very good at handling this situation! And if you need anything, just call me," said Dr. Gerard.
Chapter 14
Thank you so much, Doctor, for your availability and trust. It's a great honor for me."
She looked at the man with great admiration.
"Doctor, you're a true gentleman. I don't know how to thank you! Would you like a nice hot tea?"
"Madam! I don't want to disturb you!"
"Please, doctor, stay!" I say to him.
"I want to share with you and ask your opinion on my research!"
"Gladly!" he said.
We sit in front of the stove, sipping a nice cup of hot tea.
And discussing my research.
My aunt watches us from afar with a smile on her face.
"I'll let you study in peace while I take care of the housework. See you later, dear Zoe!"
"See you later, Aunt!"
We take the opportunity to devote ourselves to my studies.
"Paralysis is known as a transient permanent suppression of motor activity in one or more muscles."
"Its general cause is damage to the motor pathways."
"There are many types of paralysis:
Spastic paralysis (central)
Flaccid paralysis (peripheral)
Progressive paralysis
Paralysis infantile paralysis (polio)
And finally, agitated paralysis (Parkinson's)"
"Right, Zoe! Well done! Let's move on!"
"Doctor! Mine is spastic paralysis, right?"
"Yes, that's true! But let's stick to our topic!"
"And let's find an effective vial that's injected into the dorsal system and that could be the solution to my case!"
"That would be a good idea! But we'd have to do some research in the clinic to find it!"
"I want to be there too!"
"Of course, Zoe! Listen! I'll give you some advice! Life is beautiful, so we must enjoy it and take advantage of this opportunity!
"Excellent advice, Doctor! Thank you."
"And now, dear soldier, drink your tea or it will get cold!"
"Affirmative, Commander Norway!"
And let's begin our search again, smiling...
And so the new Zoe McCain is reborn.
A smiling, strong, and determined girl, focused on her one goal and dream: to become a well-known medical researcher.
Part Two: Zoe's Rebirth
Chapter 15
Zoe! Dear! Don't forget your books or your things at school! And don't give your lunch to anyone! I made it with so much love!
"Okay, Auntie! Don't worry!"
"And be careful with people, Zoe!"
"Of course, Auntie, I have to go! It's really late!"
"Of course, my dear!" and he kisses me on the cheeks.
"See you soon, dear!"
"See you soon, Auntie!"
I ran towards the school bus.
A new Zoe is coming back to school today. I'll be strong, attentive, and smart. I won't let anyone make fun of me.
I run into school towards the science room since I'm really late.
But I glimpse the boys from the basketball team in the middle of the hallway.
"There's the perfect Zoe McCain! I heard Tom went to juvi because of you," says one of them.
"Yes! I heard they accused him and Jessica of stealing your backpack, Miss Angel!" says the other.
"Now stop throwing tantrums! It was Tom who asked for it. He humiliated me along with his classmate Jessica, and they stole a very dangerous scientific invention, unaware of the risks they could be taking!
One of them was about to approach me, but Mike came to stop him.
"Zoe's right! Stop tormenting her! If anyone should have paid, it was Tom!" Mike says.
The two players take a step back and walk away.
"Look, I don't need a lawyer, Mike! I can defend myself!"
"I know, Zoe, but I wanted to teach her a lesson in person! I know you'd never believe me, but I feel sorry for you!"
"I have to go right now, I have a lesson!"
I left him there watching and rushed into the classroom.
"Sorry, Professor! I'm late!"
"Relax, Zoe! The important thing is that you're well! Now take your seat."
I go straight to my desk. While my classmates look at me guiltily.
"And now let's get back to our injury.
We were talking about the involuntary gestures of the human species and how the human brain plays a role in these gestures."
Chapter 16
The school year is almost over.
I had already planned my thesis on cerebral palsy very carefully, and it was packed with information, thanks also to the help of Dr. Gerard, who always came to our house, brought a bunch of books on the various cases of cerebral palsy, and he studied all these cases with me. He always kept me up; with him, I feel safe, and this makes me have strange doubts about my feelings for this man. Also because I was completely forgetting about Tom, as if our childhood relationship were a false one. Empty, but with Gerard, everything is different, and this gives me so many fears.
"And if it ends as badly as it did with Tom,"
I said to myself, carefree.
"Everything's fine, Zoe!"
I bite my lip in a flash and turn abruptly to face my interlocutor.
"Doctor Gerard! It's you! It's a surprise! I wasn't expecting you to arrive."
I was outside the high school, it was 6:00 PM, waiting for the school bus to go home.
"Zoe! I actually asked your aunt if I could take you to the science lab in New Jersey!"
"Did you ask my aunt? And what did she say?"
"She said it was fine! And I say it's time to put all the scientific information we've learned together to test!"
"Are you sure this is the right thing to do, doctor? I mean, it's 6:00 PM and it'll be dark soon! I don't want to worry about my aunt."
"Don't worry, you'll be safe and protected with me! I've already told your aunt."
"All right!"
I get into his car, all red with shame.
I take a deep breath, hoping not to be disappointed this time either.
Chapter 17
Scientific Research Laboratory
New Jersey
"Here we are," says Gerard.
"So we have to test everything I've studied experimentally! And I'm totally ready."
"Wait, Zoe! I actually had something in mind before testing you."
"Tell me, doctor! What should we test?"
"Sit down, Zoe, please! I have to take your stimulation backpack away from you for a moment," he says to me.
"Did something happen, doctor? I'm worried."
"Actually, I need to give you an injection into your spine, and a new liquid vial I created after doing a lot of experiments on paralyzed animals, which immediately had a positive effect! It's actually miraculous! And I want to see the results on you, Zoe! I want you to be able to walk like you used to, Zoe."
"Do you think it will work for me, doctor? Do you think there's any hope?"
"Of course! And you and I both know there's always hope for a solution to every case, and now stay still and don't move! I have to give you the injection."
The doctor had me lie on my stomach on the bed, gave me a local anesthetic, then gave me an acupuncture injection in my main spine.
New Jersey
The next day
I woke up with sunlight hitting my eyes. I'm in my room, I feel like I'm home, but how did I get here?
"Zoe! Dear! I brought you breakfast!"
Aunt Marta enters the room with the breakfast tray.
"Aunt! How did I get here to your room? From what I remember, Dr. Gerard took me to a medical clinic and gave me an injection in my main spine to help me walk again, but then I don't remember anything!
Was it just a dream or was it reality?"
"Yes, it's true, dear! The doctor took you home and then left..."
My aunt hadn't finished speaking and was starting to feel sick. She was about to fall to the floor, and I didn't notice until I jumped out of bed, instinctively running toward her and catching her before she fell to the floor.
"Oh my God! Zoe! You're standing! You managed to walk!"
My aunt said, her eyes wide with surprise.
"Everything's fine, Auntie! I'm here now!" I said, equally surprised.
"Don't worry, dear! It could just be a drop in blood pressure!"
My aunt said to me.
Chapter 18
I'm in a dream, a dream where I can walk again, I can be the Zoe I was before," I said to myself.
But suddenly my legs start shaking again, and I collapse.
"Auntie! I didn't realize! I acted on instinct without considering the consequences."
"Relax, dear! I'm going to call the doctor right away! We need to understand your health situation now!"
"Auntie! Gerard did it! With his vial, he helped me stand!
It's a miracle!"
"Yes! Dear, I saw it! And I was amazed by the surprise!" That young man is a genius."
My aunt helped me get back to bed.
I tried to move my legs, which were still weak.
I must say that I managed it with difficulty, but the important thing is that I did it, and that's a big step.
My aunt immediately goes to call Doctor Gerard, who arrives at my house in a quarter of an hour at most.
The doctor usually examines me and then says:
"Zoe! I think you need to start physiotherapy! That way, your legs will be able to support your body weight after all this time, and you'll be able to walk normally again."
And so it was.
Two weeks later
I took two weeks off from school with the certificate that Doctor Gerard gave me, but he didn't stop helping me, studying with me for my final year thesis and always bringing me homework from my high school teachers.
I'm starting to feel a lot of determination.
And gratitude to That man, but these feelings are deeper than that. I'm scared to see the future of this relationship.
I'm in the physical therapy room and I'm trying to stand. Doctor Gerard was holding my shaking hands, and the physical therapist was there with him.
"Come on! Zoe! Take the step! I know you can do it! Come on!"
"I'm trying!"
And I move forward with my shaking leg.
"Well done, Zoe! Come on! Keep going!"
And I kept walking toward him, dragging my legs in front of me, which were shaking once until I lost my balance, almost falling on the doctor.
"Great job! You did well, Zoe! Now it's time for rest.
We'll get back to work tomorrow."
And we continued like this until the excellent results began to show.
Chapter 19
I returned to school, fully prepared and in great shape to pass the big final exam.
My classmates were completely surprised and amazed by my physical results, as were the teacher and the principal.
Besides all these stupid classmates, Mike was coming toward me. He was definitely trying to open Tom's speech, but I pretended not to see him, avoiding him by walking away.
We prepared our thesis and research for the exam.
And then the big day arrived.
All the professors were sitting there, giving notes and quizzing us about our thesis, our chosen topic, and the different tools that test our arguments.
At the professors' desk, the natural sciences teacher patted me on the shoulder before he went to sit down with the other professors.
"Come on, Zoe! Know that I'm counting on you!"
He told me
Everyone presented their topic.
Then when it was my turn, I began to explain the different cases of paralysis, from children to adults, and how to treat them. I also paid tribute to my study partner, Professor Gerardo, without revealing his identity in front of the audience, mentioning the new scientific research that has revealed a miraculous vial that can work on humans and cure them of any type of paralysis.
I was very nervous when I finished the exam. My aunt was waiting for me outside.
"Zoe! Dear! Are you okay? How did the exam go?"
"I'm so nervous, Aunt! They still have the results to give, but I hope everything went well!"
"I wish you all the best, dear Zoe!"
My aunt said to me.
A few weeks later,
The results came out. I was outside waiting anxiously with all my classmates.
I was looking for my name on the list of those admitted.
With fidgeting fingers, I searched for my name until I found it.
Finally, I saw on the list
ZOE MCCAIN: Eligible. Score: 100/100
I was breathless.
I was about to let out a cry of happiness,
But I stopped myself.
"Good morning! Here's our prodigious student!"
"Good morning, Mr. Principal! I don't know how to thank you! I'm at a loss for words!"
"And I have something to tell you, Zoe."
He gestures for me to follow him to the office.
I enter the office.
My aunt is sitting there waiting for me.
"Aunt! What a surprise to see you here!"
"Dear! The principal and I are happy to share this great news with you!" says my aunt.
The principal takes over again:
"Zoe! Considering your excellent results and your very interesting thesis, we at the New Jersey Scientific High School would be happy to pay for your scholarship to medical school!" says the principal.
"Finally, your dream will come true, my dear! You will become a research doctor!"
My aunt says.
I am stunned by the surprise.
Part Three: When Dreams Come True
Chapter 20
New Jersey
Three Months Later
Dear Mom, Dear Dad
Time flies, and I'm racing toward the goal I promised you.
Today is my first day at medical school, and so begins my new adventure toward my big dream.
Yesterday I stopped by the hospital to say goodbye to the dear people who took care of me and supported me until I got to where I am today.
I stopped by to thank Doctor Gerard, because thanks to him, I became the Zoe I am today. He is my idol and my point of admiration. I would like to become a research doctor as good as him.
Five more years of sacrifices, and I will finally have achieved my goal, so you will be very proud of a courageous and determined daughter.
I wish you all the best wherever you are, may your soul rest in peace.
Your daughter
Zoe
Chapter 21
The years pass, and I'm even more committed to studying.
I returned home after a full day of studying at university.
I did my homework, then I fell asleep.
After that, I woke up abruptly to the light of a new thought.
I'm actually curious to test a theory I've had in mind, which would be to avoid chemotherapy to treat chronic diseases, due to its negative effects on the human body, and instead use another method, which involves freezing malignant cells to prevent them from multiplying and causing cancer.
And I thought of sharing this theory with an old friend of mine.
I grabbed the phone and dialed without noticing the time, waiting for an answer.
"Hello! I'm Dr. Gerard Norway: let me know!"
"Hello, Doctor! I'm Zoe McCain! You remember me?"
I look at my watch; it's past 11:00 PM.
"Of course! Good evening, Zoe! How nice to hear from you! Are you okay?"
"Yes! Everything's fine, thank you! Actually, and sorry about the time, but I just wanted to ask your opinion on a theory of mine."
"Gladly! Let me know! No problem!"
I'll tell him everything I have in mind.
"Interesting, Zoe!
I think this is a good opportunity to discuss this in person! I'll schedule an appointment!"
"You really will, Doctor! I don't know how to thank you for your time!"
"A nice hot tea made by your aunt will be enough to thank me."
I smile and at the same moment I feel all red as a chili pepper.
Chapter 22
New Jersey
After a few years
I was just a few months away from presenting my doctorate.
Every day after finishing my studies at the university, I went to the scientific clinic in New Jersey.
Together with Gerard, we conducted many experiments to explain my theory on how to fight chronic diseases without chemotherapy.
I took note of all the results of the experiments we conducted and we continued to experiment until we reached the long-awaited result.
And the big day arrived to test my research—or rather, my thesis—in front of my university classmates, professors, and the dean.
My aunt was there, along with the parents of all the medical school students.
My parents came to mind.
"Mom, Dad, the big day has arrived. I'll do my best to keep my promise."
I said to myself.
Gerard was also in the crowd, his gaze reassuring me.
By now we've managed to find the language to communicate with each other.
Ladies and gentlemen, let's give the floor to our student Zoe McCain to present her thesis:
"The most effective way to treat chronic diseases."
And so my presentation begins.
Chapter Twenty-Third and Final
"...the freezing of tumor-causing cells, or as my colleague Dr. Gerard Norway and I called it, cryotherapy, is a technique that uses intense cold to destroy tumor cells and can be considered an alternative to chemotherapy in many cancer cases.
We have conducted numerous experiments on both animals and humans, and the results are excellent. In fact, we are thinking of eliminating chemotherapy due to its negative consequences by seeking a cure that can eliminate chronic diseases forever, and we are still conducting trials on this basis.
For now, I will give you a scientific demonstration on sick mice using cryotherapy, and as I always say: You should never give up hope in life because there is a cure for everything."
After finishing my speech, I began my demonstration to the applause of the audience. The demonstration went very well.
"Thank you very much to our student Zoe McCain, you can return to your seat now."
The principal says, calling the next student.
"Well done, Zoe! You'll see, everything will be fine!" Gerard said, looking at me with a knowing look.
"Congratulations! You did brilliantly, my dear!" my aunt said, touching my shoulder.
After hearing all the students' theses,
It was time for the jury to take notes.
After a while, the dean arrived to announce the results:
"Ladies and gentlemen, students of the medical school! Your theses were very interesting. Let's just say we had a bit of trouble giving you the rankings you deserve, but in the end we managed it.
I'm calling the students, according to the rankings, to receive their doctorates." A slight pause ensued.
"The first-degree doctorate goes to our brilliant student and our future research doctor: ZOE MCCAIN!"
I'm breathless with surprise. Dr. Gerard takes my hand and helps me up onto the stage.
Deeply moved, I thank my aunt and my partner in crime, Gerard, for their support.
"I've finally made it! Mom and Dad will be happy with me wherever they are," I said to my aunt.
She hugged me with tears in her eyes.
Plus, the university decided to donate money to our project against chronic diseases.
*******************
After the doctoral ceremony was over,
The celebrations began.
"Zoe! I need to talk to you for a moment! I'm taking advantage of your aunt's presence!" Gerard said.
"Tell me, Gerard!"
"From the first time I saw you, I've felt so much admiration for your grit and determination.
But little by little, my feelings grew deeper and stronger.
Getting to the point:
Miss McCain! Do you want to share your life with me as my wife?"
I'm speechless.
My aunt puts her hand over her mouth in surprise.
"Yess ... He pulled my arm hard, I couldn't help but scream. Gerard and the principal noticed, and they came running toward us. Two policemen chased Tom. Tom ran away, but before he left, he said some words that have stayed with me for the rest of my life.
"Our story isn't over yet, Zoe! I'll haunt you for the rest of your life!" he said.
Under Gerard's reassuring embrace, I was thinking about Tom's words.
"I think I'm back where the nightmare began!"
I said to myself.

Chapter 11: Humans
(authors note: no sex this chapter, it'll come in with the next one ;) PS: I know the timeline is wack)
Part 1: Hot Springs. Robin
Waking to the gentle warmth of the morning sun streaming through the window, I find myself enveloped in Rimuru's comforting embrace, his rhythmic breathing lulling me back to consciousness. With a tender smile, I press a soft kiss to his cheek before extricating myself from his arms, the sensation of his warmth lingering as I rise to start the day.
As I make my way through our humble abode, a sense of anticipation prickles at my senses, a subtle shift in the air heralding the arrival of Shizu's companions. Stepping outside, I'm greeted by the bustling activity of our town, the familiar faces of Yohm and his party drawing my attention.
Approaching the trio with a sense of pride swelling within me, I sidle up beside them, a confident stance belying the excitement thrumming beneath the surface. "Welcome back, guys," I greet them warmly, my hands planted firmly on my hips as I survey their weary but determined visages, a testament to the progress we've made since their last visit.
Gobuta, ever the efficient aide, scurries off with a giant spider in tow, destined for Shuna's culinary expertise. With a silent exchange of thoughts, I entrust him with the task of attending to Yohm and his companions, a gesture of implicit trust in his capabilities.
"Robin? Is that really you?" Eren's voice cuts through the air, his eyes scanning me with a mix of surprise and admiration.
"Looking sharp, Robin," Kaval chimes in, his gaze appraising as he takes in my appearance.
Before the conversation can veer off course, Guido interjects, a hint of impatience tinging his tone. "Let's stay focused, shall we? We're here for a reason."
Arching an eyebrow in feigned curiosity, I redirect the conversation. "So, what brings you to our humble abode?" I inquire, masking my amusement beneath a façade of mild interest.
Guido sighs, the weight of their purpose evident in his expression. "We've come to seek audience with Rimuru," he explains, his gaze flickering to me briefly.
"And what about me?" I interject playfully, delivering a light punch to his chest. "Rimuru might be catching some extra Z's. How about I get you settled in? The hot springs are calling after your journey."
Fuze's cautious gaze lingers on me, a hint of skepticism coloring his scrutiny. "So, you're a slime then?" he remarks, his curiosity piqued.
With a mischievous grin, I beckon them to follow, my form shifting effortlessly as I lead the way to the soothing embrace of the hot springs. With a graceful leap, I transform into my slime form, the anticipation palpable as I guide them towards their destination.
As they immerse themselves in the rejuvenating waters, a collective sigh of relief escapes their lips, the tension of their journey melting away with each passing moment. Drifting lazily on the surface, I turn my attention to Fuze, the tranquility of the surroundings lending a serene air to our conversation.
"So, you wished to speak with Rimuru?" I inquire, my voice carrying softly over the gentle lapping of the water.
Fuze nods, his demeanor shifting slightly as he gathers his thoughts. "Regarding the recent orc lord incident... Are we to be wary of your intentions?" he ventures cautiously, his eyes betraying a hint of apprehension.
With a reassuring smile, I extend a calming presence, the faint ripple of magicules dancing upon the water's surface. "While we may not be entirely passive, rest assured that we seek only peace. Treat us with respect, and we shall extend the same courtesy in return," I assure him, the weight of my words punctuated by the subtle shift in the atmosphere.
Relieved, Fuze reclines back into the warm embrace of the water, a tentative smile gracing his features. "Thank you for clarifying," he murmurs gratefully, the tension dissipating with each passing moment.
Before our conversation can delve further, the soft sound of footsteps heralds Rimuru's arrival, a tray of steaming tea in hand. "Good morning, everyone," he greets cheerfully, his gaze alighting upon me with fondness as he joins us in the tranquil waters.
I chuckle softly, my slime form morphing into a makeshift bowl that envelops Rimuru from below. "Good morning, my little cutie," I murmur affectionately, squeezing him tightly within my slime embrace while the others watch on, their expressions a mixture of amusement and confusion. "Oh, by the way, Rimuru and I are an item," I announce gleefully, our combined forms floating serenely on the surface of the hot spring.
The collective gasp that follows echoes through the hot spring, the men's incredulous shouts drawing the attention of the women on the opposite side.
"What's all the commotion?" Erin's voice carries over the walls, her curiosity piqued by the sudden outburst.
"Seems like Rimuru and Robin are a thing!" Kaval's voice booms over the barrier, eliciting a chorus of delighted squeals from the other side.
Rimuru's slime flushes a deeper shade of blue as he addresses me, his embarrassment evident in the subtle shift of his form. "Maybe next time, break the news with a bit more finesse," he suggests sheepishly.
I shrug nonchalantly, squeezing him affectionately. "Eh, it was bound to come out eventually," I reply, my tone light-hearted despite his embarrassment.
Before the conversation can stray further, Fuze interjects, steering us back on track. "About the orc lord incident, did you two really defeat it?" he queries, his gaze flickering between Rimuru and me.
"Yeah, though I may have gotten a bit reckless," I admit sheepishly, a hint of embarrassment coloring my tone.
Rimuru interjects, his voice gentle but firm. "No, Robin played a crucial role in the battle. We should credit a human champion and highlight Tempest's support in equipping them," he suggests diplomatically, his gaze meeting Fuze's.
Fuze considers the proposal, his hand stroking his chin thoughtfully before nodding in agreement. "A mutually beneficial arrangement indeed," he concedes, a spark of enthusiasm igniting in his eyes.
"Speaking of plans, Rimuru, we can't forget about finding Shizu's students in Engracia," I remind him, playfully poking his slime form with my own.
He giggles at the gesture, clearing his throat before responding. "Right, we'll need to head to Engracia soon. Any advice?" he asks, turning to Fuze for guidance.
Fuze, unfazed by our antics, offers practical advice. "You'll need adventurer's licenses to bypass the screening at Engracia's gates. Just swing by Blumond and register with the guild. I'll ensure the test is fair for you," he assures Rimuru, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes.
Rimuru nods in understanding, mentally noting the task ahead. "Got it. I'll need some time to prepare before we depart. Oh, and let's schedule a meeting with Yohm. He might make a good champion," he suggests, his mind already racing with plans.
Fuze nods in agreement, stepping out of the hot spring to dry off and dress. "Sounds like a plan. I'll wait for you at the city hall," he declares before taking his leave.
Part 2: Meeting With Yohm. Robin
After luxuriating in the hot spring, we emerge in our human forms, stealing a private moment for a tender kiss before setting off for city hall. The brightness in our expressions reflects the unspoken bond between us as we intertwine our fingers and walk side by side. We acknowledge the citizens with warm waves as we stroll, my head resting on Rimuru's shoulder, cherishing the closeness.
As we approach the imposing white building, our demeanor shifts to one of business. Inside, before stepping into the meeting room, I steal a glance at Rimuru, unable to resist teasing him. "You're always so adorable, you know that," I whisper with a playful smile.
He blushes and protests, his attempt at denial only adding to his charm. "You're cute too!" he retorts before correcting himself, flustered. I can't help but laugh softly at his adorable antics.
"Sure, sure, keep telling yourself that," I tease, sticking out my tongue before leading the way into the room.
Inside, Rimuru takes the lead, addressing Fuze and Yohm with a sense of authority. "As you know, the orc lord has been dealt with. Now, we must discuss our next steps." He proposes the idea of a human champion, backed by Tempest, to solidify our relations with humans.
I playfully interject from behind Rimuru. "You're the boss, cutie," I tease, enjoying his exasperated reaction.
Turning to the matter at hand, Rimuru queries, "Any suggestions for the role?"
Fuze hesitates, opting for caution. "Perhaps we need more time to consider."
Seizing the opportunity, I offer my suggestion. "Yohm could be a great candidate," I propose, causing him to startle in his seat at the unexpected mention of his name.
"Me?" Yohm's confusion is palpable. "But why?"
"You're a natural leader," I explain, "and with some training from Tempest, you could become even stronger. Hakuro can whip you into shape," I add with a mischievous grin.
Yohm looks bewildered by my suggestion, prompting a chuckle from Rimuru. "What's with that look?" he asks, amused by Yohm's reaction.
Rimuru bows his head respectfully. "It was an honor knowing you," he acknowledges with genuine sincerity.
I can't help but giggle at his response. "Get ready to be transformed into a whole new person. Hope you enjoy the ride," I tease, a mischievous glint in my eyes.
Hakuro materializes as if on cue, seizing Rimuru with a firm grip. "A new student, huh? Hope you're sturdy," he remarks, his tone laced with a hint of challenge, before vanishing into the shadows with Yohm in tow.
"Well, I suppose he doesn't have much of a choice. We accept," Fuze concedes with a resigned sigh. "Just make sure he survives the training."
"I can't make any promises," I quip with a smirk, taking my seat with a casual air. "Say, would it be alright if we borrow Erin and her party for a bit? We could use their guidance to Blumond for the licenses."
"Of course, they could use some gear upgrades anyway. And if that's all for the meeting, I have matters to attend to back in Blumond," Fuze replies, rising from his chair.
"Yeah, I think we're done here. Yohm will be in good hands, and their gear will be top-notch by the time you see them again. Safe travels," I bid farewell as Fuze exits the room.
Turning to Rimuru with a playful grin, I make a request. "Hey, Rimuru, can you carry me now?"
He sighs, but with a fond smile, he scoops me up as I transform into a slime. "You know I can't resist you, my dear," he murmurs, holding me close as we begin to walk, my consciousness slipping away as I drift off to sleep in his comforting embrace.
Part 3: Feast. Rimuru
With Robin nestled in my arms, I can't help but smile, running my fingers gently over her slime as we walk together. The aroma of something delicious draws my attention, and I follow my nose to find a crowd of monsters gathered around a massive spider being cooked. I locate an empty table and settle down, Robin comfortably perched on my lap. The chatter of the monsters fades into the background as I lose myself in the mesmerizing patterns within Robin's slime, resembling golden, glittering stars against the dark backdrop.
Suddenly, a plate is placed before me, breaking my trance. "Here you go, Lord Rimuru!" chirps Shion cheerfully, leaning in close with a curious glint in her eye. "What are you looking at?" she asks, leaning even closer, her ample cleavage on display.
"Just admiring Robin," I reply, struggling to maintain eye contact and hoping she'll give me some space. "You can go ahead and get your own food now," I suggest, subtly hinting for her to step back.
"Oh, alright, sir. Let me know if you need anything else," she says with a smile before retreating to get her own meal.
I sigh with relief and lean back slightly, continuing to pet Robin's slime as I watch the monsters around us enjoy their food. I take a bite of the spider meat, savoring its crab-like flavor with a creamy texture and a hint of sweetness. "This is incredible," I murmur to myself, the taste sending shivers of pleasure down my spine. A few nearby citizens chuckle softly at my reaction.
"Thank you for the compliment on my cooking, Lord Rimuru," Shuna's voice comes from behind me.
"Oh, it's always a pleasure, Shuna. Your cooking never disappoints," I reply with a grateful smile, though inwardly feeling a slight twinge of embarrassment at being observed so closely, even by my own subordinates and citizens.
As the feast stretches on longer than anticipated, a flash of blond hair catches my eye, drawing my attention to Erin. With a silent signal to Robin, I leave her at our table and make my way over to Erin, gently tugging on her sleeve to get her attention.
"Hey, Erin. Would you mind staying for a couple of days? We'd like to get you guys some new gear, and I'd appreciate your guidance to Blumond," I ask, hoping it's not too much to request.
She turns to me, a warm smile spreading across her face. "Of course, Rimuru. I'll let the others know," she assures me before heading off to join the feast.
Satisfied with her response, I return to our table, scooping up Robin and carrying her back to our house. Settling into bed, I cradle her slime gently against my chest, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me after the satisfying meal. As fatigue sets in, I find myself drifting off, my gaze fixed on the mesmerizing patterns within Robin's slime. With a soft sigh, I embrace her closely, surrendering to the embrace of sleep.
Part 4: The Morning Before Departure. Robin
As I awaken, I'm greeted by the sight of Rimuru's adorable face mere inches from mine. A surge of affection floods through me as I admire his endearing features, marveling at his charm. With a soft smile, I shift into my human form, wrapping my arms around his petite frame, relishing the feel of his soft blue hair between my fingers. His warm breath against my neck sends a shiver down my spine, filling me with warmth and contentment.
Gently pressing a kiss to his forehead, I pull him close to my chest, basking in the intimacy of the moment. "I love you," I murmur softly, my heart swelling with affection as I gaze down at him. Reluctantly slipping out of his embrace, I dress myself in a simple cloak and black attire, eager for the day ahead, hoping we'll visit the adventurers guild.
Stepping outside, I'm greeted by the serene beauty of the morning. The dew-kissed grass sparkles in the soft light, while a gentle breeze plays with my hair, and the only sounds are the chirping of birds and the rustling of trees. A sense of tranquility washes over me, bringing both a smile to my lips and a tear to my eye.
As the rest of our companions begin to stir, disrupting the peace of the morning, I find solace in the quiet moments. Seating myself on the stump where Rimuru once named all the goblins, I watch the sunrise, lost in its beauty as our friends emerge from their homes.
"Good morning, Lady Robin," Gobuta greets me as he heads towards the training grounds.
"Morning. Try not to overdo it in training," I jest, a playful smile tugging at my lips.
"Come on, you know I'm tougher than I look," he retorts, flexing his non-existent muscles with a grin before continuing on his way.
I let out a soft chuckle. "Sure thing, buddy. Break a leg," I quip, waving him off with a smile before returning my gaze to the rising sun, soaking in its warmth for a few more moments until Geld approaches.
"Hey there, Junior," I greet him with a playful nickname, a smile dancing on my lips.
"Good morning, my lady. How's your day shaping up?" he inquires, a hint of warmth in his tone.
"It's going splendidly, thanks for asking. And how are you and the other orcs faring?" I inquire, genuinely interested.
Geld straightens up with pride evident in his demeanor. "Things are progressing smoothly. Construction is going well," he replies, glowing with satisfaction.
"Good to hear. Keep up the great work," I encourage him with a bright smile.
"Will do, my lady," he responds before heading off to attend to his tasks.
Before I can fully immerse myself in the peaceful morning, I'm interrupted by a familiar red oni approaching from behind.
"Hey, Lady Robin. How's it going?" he asks with a friendly tone.
"Just gearing up to get an adventurer's license with Rimuru," I reply with a smile.
"But aren't you supposed to be human to get one of those?" he questions, a hint of skepticism in his voice.
I raise an eyebrow, feigning offense. "I look human enough, don't I?" I retort with a playful smirk.
He hesitates for a moment before responding, "Well, you do have a youthful appearance, and, uh... you're not exactly... endowed in certain areas," he explains, a touch of nervousness creeping into his tone.
I feel a twinge of annoyance at his comment. "How about you stick to calling me beautiful, and I'll stick to not ripping your head off?" I reply with a half-joking yet menacing tone, emphasizing my point.
"You know what, I think I should get going," Benimaru announces, taking a step back.
I let out an evil laugh as Benimaru starts to back away, then bursts into a sprint, disappearing around a corner. Suddenly, I yelp in surprise as Rimuru sneaks up behind me.
He looks at me with a pout. "Why did you leave the bed? I wanted to snuggle you when I woke up," he complains, forcefully lifting me up.
Blushing at his sudden boldness, I brush some hair out of my face, feeling flustered. "I wanted to, but the sun was about to rise, and I wanted to watch it," I explain, offering an excuse.
"Not buying it. You're coming with me so we can cuddle before Erin's party wakes up," he insists, carrying me back to our house and closing the door behind us, before laying on top of me on the bed.
"Y-you're being awfully forward... what's going on?" I stammer, trying to hide my flustered state.
"Good question. All I know is that I want you," he admits, softly kissing my neck.
Blushing, I try to suppress any sounds as he kisses me, wrapping my arms and legs around him, pulling him close. "Well... I want you too," I confess, hoping he'll act on his desire.
"Good," he murmurs, smiling, before kissing my cheek once more, wrapping his arms around me tightly. His face flushes bright red as he kisses along my neck and jaw, teasingly doing nothing about our clothes, yet continuing to embrace me gently as he showers me with kisses.
"You know, Rimuru, you're so adorable when you're forward with me," I tease, hoping to convey my desire for him.
"S-shut up, l'm not cute," he stammers, flustered by my words, his confidence wavering.
I sigh, holding him close against me, reveling in the scent of his soft blue hair as it brushes against my face and neck. Despite his embarrassment, he remains pressed against me, seeking comfort in our closeness.
Our moment of intimacy is interrupted by a knock on the door. As we both scramble to compose ourselves and stand up, Erin peers inside.
"Hey... um... you two ready to go yet?" she asks, sensing the awkwardness in the air.
"Yeah, just give us like 2 minutes, okay?" | reply, blushing softly, wishing I had more time alone with Rimuru to explore my desires.
"Okay, see you soon," Erin says before leaving our house.
With the door locked, I push Rimuru against the wall, unable to resist the urge to express my longing for him. "I can't wait to have you all to myself when we get back," I whisper, before kissing him deeply on the lips. I gently bite his lip before pulling back slightly, asserting my possessiveness. "You're mine," | declare, a hint of possessive desire in my voice.
"Y-yes, ma'am," he stammers, his cheeks flushing crimson. He leans in to kiss me gently on the cheek before reluctantly pulling away and heading towards the door. "You can have me once we get back from Blumond," he stammers, clearly flustered.
I can't help but giggle at his adorable reaction, reaching out to boop his nose playfully. "I'm holding you to that, cutie," I tease, planting a soft kiss on his nose before happily making my way outside.
Part 5: Road To Blumond. Robin
I step outside, my smile radiant as I approach Erin's party. "Give Rimuru a minute; I left him very flustered," I admit with a playful giggle.
"Yeah, I assumed as much," Erin responds with a sigh. "You guys are very cute together, but geez, you're way too overly lovey-dovey," she remarks bluntly.
I deflate slightly, realizing I may have been too outward with my affection. "Oh... I didn't realize it was so much of an issue," I murmur, feeling a pang of guilt.
"Don't get me wrong, it's adorable and all, but you're totally rubbing it in other people's faces," Erin explains gently, her hand resting on my head. "It's okay, though. As long as you two love each other, then who cares?"
I feel a mix of relief and remorse. "No, no, it's not okay. I'm sorry for doing that to you. It's just... I'm just so deeply in love with him that I can't help but swoon whenever I see him," I confess, my voice tinged with sincerity.
"It's okay. Just tone it down, okay, girl?" Erin reassures me.
"I'll sure try," I promise with a soft sigh.
Just then, Rimuru arrives, looking visibly happy. "Hey, guys! Are you ready to go now?" he exclaims, his smile infectious.
"Yep, we're all good. Let's head out," Erin responds, waving for him to join us. I follow suit, a smile returning to my lips as we begin our journey.
As we walk, I decide to strike up a conversation with Rimuru. "So, Rimuru, what do you want to do when we first get our adventuring license?" I ask, my gaze filled with curiosity and affection.
"I don't know, isn't it kind of just a means to an end?" Rimuru questions, his tone contemplative.
"What, no! I wanna go on an adventure and get some gold!" I exclaim, excitement evident in my voice.
"You're basically made of gold," Rimuru points out casually.
"Yeah, and? You're not gonna sell me, are you?" I tease, raising an eyebrow playfully.
Rimuru chuckles, hoping to keep the mood light. "No comment," he replies, a hint of jest in his voice.
"Sell me, and you won't have a girlfriend," I declare triumphantly, crossing my arms.
"True, true. But if I sell you, I'd also probably have a lot of gold. I could just hire a new girlfriend," Rimuru teases back, a mischievous glint in his eye.
My expression falters slightly, a hint of concern creeping in. "You'd better be joking," I say, my voice tinged with uncertainty.
"Of course I'm joking. I wouldn't sell you for the world," Rimuru reassures me, chuckling at my reaction.
I pout playfully. "You're lucky you're so cute," I tease.
"I-I'm not cute! Shut up about that!" Rimuru protests, his cheeks flushing as he hides his face in his shirt, flustered by the compliment.
Giggling, I pat his head affectionately before we continue walking. Eventually, we reach the edge of Blumond. Rimuru dons his mask, and I conceal my aura as we approach the receptionist desk. I can't help but giggle as Rimuru struggles to see over the counter, prompting me to lift him up so he can reach.
"Th-thank you, Robin," Rimuru stammers, his cheeks turning a soft shade of pink. He then grabs an application form and begins filling it out, his focus on the task at hand.
The receptionist giggles softly. “Looks like we have a Shizu fan here. Aren't you a little young to be an adventurer, little girl?” she asks, amusement evident in her voice.
Rimuru shakes his head. “Nope, and I want to take the test today, please.” He clicks the pen to close it and hands her the sheet with determination.
"I'm applying too!" I chime in, grabbing an application and swiftly starting to fill it out. I decide to omit most of my skills, only listing my proficiency in armor manipulation, as it's the most relevant for the test.
The receptionist raises an eyebrow. “Are you her sister?”
"Sure am, miss," I reply, trying to play it off as casually as possible, hoping to divert any suspicions about our relationship.
"Well, isn't that just swell," she comments in a caring and slightly motherly tone. "I think you'll have to start at the lowest rank, though, little girls."
Rimuru interjects confidently. “Nope, we're very strong. Give us the test to rank up. We want to determine our strength.”
The receptionist looks skeptical. “Hmm, are you sure you can handle it?”
“We're both much stronger than we look, ma'am. Trust us,” I assure her, echoing Rimuru's confidence.
"Yeah, I'm totally swole!" Rimuru adds with a grin, attempting to flex his non-existent muscles.
"Sis, no... Just no," I sigh, shaking my head in embarrassment.
The receptionist nods, considering our words. “I'll go get the proctor for the test. Just wait right here, please,” she says before heading off to find him.
I take a seat, adjusting my clothing to ensure I look presentable. As usual, I don the reaper outfit, feeling a surge of confidence in my appearance. With my scythe strapped securely to my back, I can't help but feel like the epitome of coolness. However, my thoughts are interrupted when the test proctor emerges, hobbling along on a peg leg. I can't recall encountering him in the anime, which piques my curiosity.
"Hello," he greets us, glancing at our applications. "Robin and Mr. Rimuru, I'll be conducting your test today. Head to the training ground, and I'll assess your skills. Be prepared for a challenge," he adds nonchalantly, showing little reaction to our unconventional appearance.
I exchange a shrug with Rimuru before leading the way to the training ground. As I step onto the field, the proctor wastes no time initiating the test. "First up, hound dog," he commands.
With practiced ease, I swiftly dispatch the creature, demonstrating my proficiency without breaking a sweat. The proctor's expression remains impassive as he moves on to the next challenge. "Dark goblin," he calls out.
Before the creature can even take a single step, I eliminate it effortlessly, maintaining my focus and composure. Despite my flawless performance, the proctor's frustration becomes palpable as he summons a lesser demon in a fit of rage.
My eyes widen slightly as I dodge and roll out of the way, narrowly avoiding the demon's swooping attack. With quick reflexes, I slash upward, aiming to strike the creature, but my blow misses its mark, leaving me momentarily puzzled by the unexpected turn of events.
Reacting instinctively, I coat my scythe in my aura, channeling additional power into my weapon. To my surprise, the enhanced strike effortlessly slices the demon in half, its blood dripping off my blade.
I instinctively take a drop of the demon's blood, hoping to absorb its powers, before turning back to the proctor, who looks utterly mortified. Meanwhile, Fuze stands nearby, glaring daggers at the man.
"Um, did I pass?" | inquire tentatively, though Fuze's grumbling response leaves me uncertain.
"Sure, you did, Robin," Fuze finally responds, his tone strained. "Let's discuss this inside."
"Of course, sir," I reply promptly, gesturing for Rimuru to follow as we head indoors to address the aftermath of the unexpected outcome.
「Heartless Woman part 2」
24:
Rino woke up in a bed.
It was a room she had never seen before.
A middle-aged woman was sitting in front of her.
"You're Satoko's mother, right?"
"Nice to meet you, I'm Rino."
"We live in the same apartment complex and became friends."
As they talked, a strange feeling began to grow inside her.
This wasn't her voice.
When she looked at her hand, she saw it was connected to some wires for an electrocardiogram.
A hospital?
She stared at her bandaged hand and felt uneasy.
These weren't her nails.
Upon closer inspection, the familiar mole she had was missing.
What is going on?
As Rino started to panic, Ema smiled warmly.
"Good morning!"
25:
When the doctors learned that she had regained consciousness, they came into the room.
They conducted a medical interview and measured her blood pressure.
After instructing her to rest for a while, they left the room.
Rino wanted to know what had happened to her body.
However, she suppressed her anxious feelings and pretended to be Satoko.
Ema must not find out.
She decided to think about it after leaving this place.
Rino tried to lift herself from the bed.
But her body was heavier than she expected.
Just a little movement left her out of breath.
Rino looked up at Ema's face.
"It's okay! I'm here with you!"
Ema responded with a forced smile.
Ema was clearly anxious.
She wouldn’t leave Rino’s side.
She must have been through a terrifying experience.
Rino gently held Ema's hand, trying to reassure her.
Ema seemed a bit surprised by the warmth of her touch.
"Mom, I'm okay."
"Let's both get some rest."
Ema nodded and lay down on the nearby cot.
Soon after, Rino also fell asleep.
26:
When she woke up, Rino was beginning to get used to Satoko's body.
Maybe Satoko was in my body.
Why hasn't she come to see me?
Could it be that I'm already...
That anxiety crossed her mind.
Looking at the hospital's wall clock, she saw it was already evening.
"I need to get to my own room..."
Rino quietly resolved herself and slowly sat up.
That night, Rino slipped out of the hospital room in a wheelchair.
Her destination was her own hospital room.
The hospital, shrouded in the darkness of night, was silent.
As Rino wheeled herself through the halls, she checked the names on the doors.
She maneuvered past the nurse's station.
When she finally reached the ICU, there was no one there either.
In the distance, she heard the sound of footsteps running down the hallway.
The commotion created an ominous atmosphere.
Rino held her breath and looked around.
At that moment, a voice suddenly came from behind her.
"Satoko, what are you doing here?"
She turned around to see a nurse standing there.
Rino quickly tried to think of an excuse.
But before she could, the nurse continued.
"The person you're looking for is currently undergoing treatment."
"Don't worry."
Rino understood in an instant.
27:
The nurse helped Rino lie down on the bed.
For the first time in a long while, Rino fell into a deep sleep.
In her dream, Rino met Satoko.
Satoko was sitting on a swing in the park at midnight.
As Rino walked around to her, she saw that Satoko was sound asleep.
There was no sign of her waking up.
So, this is where you were.
Rino was filled with relief.
I’ll let her sleep until she wakes up.
With that thought, Rino woke up.
28:
What could I do until Satoko wakes up?
The thought of bullying crossed my mind.
There might still be people like Kanako, the tough type.
Even so, I decided to create a place for Satoko to return to.
If Satoko changes, the people around her should change too.
Satoko just needs to become stronger.
There's only one thing I can do.
Boxing!
For that, I need to get discharged from the hospital.
Then it hit me.
I had left Hiroshi's bike at the hospital.
29:
Rino asked Ema for a favor and borrowed her smartphone.
After searching, she found a video.
Rino told Ema that she was in the video and that the person who posted it was worried.
Ema had a hard time understanding.
Rino repeatedly pleaded to make contact.
Finally, Ema sent a direct message to Hiroshi's social media account.
30:
Ema sent a direct message:
"I’m contacting you on behalf of my daughter Satoko."
"Satoko has woken up safely and is doing well."
"Thank you for helping with the bicycle."
"Just wanted to give you an update."
Hiroshi hesitated.
"The bicycle situation is something only Rino and I knew about."
"Is Rino alive?"
"I checked so thoroughly; there’s no mistake."
"Did Rino tell Satoko?"
"As far as I know, she wouldn’t have had the time."
"So then?"
Hiroshi had posted many paranormal videos, but he had never actually encountered anything supernatural.
His heart raced at the thought of this first encounter.
31:
The hospital he arrived at was unbearable.
Unable to find a taxi, he had walked there.
He arrived two hours after Rino had left.
He had naively assumed that Rino would be okay.
At the scene, the area was cordoned off, preventing him from getting close.
He had no choice but to ask the onlookers from a distance.
Amidst the conflicting information, the reporters began to arrive one after another.
When he heard what the reporter was saying, he couldn't believe his ears.
Rino had died.
Could it really be that sudden?
He searched online to verify the truth.
A video posted by one of the onlookers had been uploaded.
It showed Rino fighting on the rooftop, and then falling together with Satoko.
Rino had leapt to protect Satoko as they fell.
The view was obstructed, so what happened after the fall was unclear.
Hiroshi let out a bitter laugh.
Why go to such lengths?
He had been attracted not just to Satoko’s beauty but also to her character.
Her innocence as well.
It was just like Rino to meet her end this way.
The helplessness overwhelmed him, and he couldn't stop crying.
He found the bicycle inside the restricted area.
It was right in front of the hospital entrance.
Rino must have ridden it there herself.
The thought made his sobbing uncontrollable.
31:
Hiroshi replied to Ema.
"Thank you for the message. I've received the bicycle. I'd like to visit, but could you let me know what time would be convenient? Also, if there's anything Satoko needs, please let me know."
Hiroshi waited for a reply.
Ten minutes later, he received a message from Ema.
"Thank you. You can visit between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM on weekdays. We've received special permission, so I'll guide you to her room. Please let me know your planned visit time. Also, she's requested a jump rope."
Hiroshi couldn't help but laugh.
It was such a Rino-like request.
He ordered a jump rope from a sports brand, arranging for it to arrive the next day.
He decided to visit at 1:00 PM the day after tomorrow and sent a DM to confirm.
In response, he received a message: "(≧∇≦)b."
Hiroshi smiled, thinking, "That’s so like Rino.”
32:
Hiroshi met Ema in front of the nurse's station.
He immediately recognized her because she looked so much like Satoko.
After greeting each other, Ema asked about their relationship.
Hiroshi explained that he was a video content creator, that he had been filming the apartment complex at night, and that he had found Satoko on the swing late at night. He mentioned that she had agreed to be in one of his videos.
He didn’t mention anything about Rino.
Ema nodded, but her expression was skeptical.
Hiroshi understood why.
When they entered the room, Satoko was there.
She was doing sit-ups on the bed.
"Welcome, Hiroshi!"
Ema's face darkened.
The atmosphere must have changed significantly.
Ema offered him a chair but remained standing herself.
"You've been through a lot, haven’t you... Satoko?"
"Kanako lost it, and it was a real mess."
Hiroshi could feel Ema's gaze on him.
He began to sweat nervously.
"Thanks for the bike. It really helped!"
Now there was another thing he would have to explain to Ema.
"You brought the item I asked for?"
Hiroshi nodded and handed her a package.
It was neatly wrapped.
"Thank you! I owe you one!"
With that, Satoko carefully unwrapped the package.
When she saw the jump rope, her face lit up with a beaming smile.
"This is a really good one! Thanks, Hiroshi!"
Every time Rino spoke, Ema's gaze seemed to pierce through Hiroshi.
He knew he wouldn’t be able to avoid a barrage of questions later.
"Are you going to start boxing?" Hiroshi asked.
Hugging the jump rope, Satoko answered, "You bet! I'm going to box! I'll show everyone!"
Hearing that, Ema left the room.
"Huh? What’s wrong?" Satoko asked, puzzled.
"Who knows?" Hiroshi replied, though he had an idea of how Ema was feeling inside.
Hiroshi thought to himself, "Rino is scary!”
33:
They decided to discuss the details after she was discharged.
Hiroshi quickly left the room to find Ema.
He found her hunched over behind a pillar.
Hiroshi thought he would just say goodbye and leave.
"Thank you," he said.
As he spoke, Ema wiped her eyes with a handkerchief.
She approached him, took his hand, and bowed deeply.
"My daughter has been through so much."
"She collapsed at school, was hospitalized, and then attacked."
"Do you know someone named Rino?"
Hiroshi lied.
"That person risked her life to save my daughter."
"Since then, Satoko has become like a different, much brighter person."
"I'm grateful, both to you and to Rino."
"I know there are many challenges ahead."
"Please, take care of Satoko, my daughter."
She bowed again.
"Understood! Leave it to me!"
Hiroshi responded.
Feeling Ema's emotions, his chest tightened with warmth.
34:
Rino's discharge was confirmed.
Until then, Rino trained as much as she could in her hospital bed.
Under Rino's control, Satoko's body recovered faster than expected, allowing her to practice basic footwork in the limited space of the hospital room.
Each time the nurse made her rounds, Rino quickly returned to behaving like a patient, but her eyes always shone as if planning her next move.
While Ema handled the discharge paperwork, Rino stood by the window, taking deep breaths and preparing herself to step back into the outside world.
The moment she left the hospital, Rino made a decision in her heart.
She would support Satoko only until she woke up.
The next day, Rino began her training.
Early morning jogs, jump rope, and strength training—all the routines she followed as if she were still an active boxer.
That weekend, Rino finally mustered the courage to return to the gym she had once fled from.
As she approached the gym, her legs grew heavy.
She couldn't find the words to say to the coach.
Would he accept her back after she had left without a word?
Should she tell him that she had died?
Or should she fully assume the identity of Satoko?
Rino hesitated for a long time, standing in the shadow of a utility pole near the gym.
Suddenly, someone spoke from behind her.
"Hey! Here to check out the gym?"
Rino turned around.
There stood a short, balding, chubby man with thick-rimmed glasses.
"Ah! Rino! You—"
His raspy voice delivered his usual catchphrase.
"Sorry! Coach! Forgive me!"
On reflex, she performed her usual karate chop gesture.
"So it really is Rino!"
Oh no! She’s been found out.
"No, I’m not! I’m Satoko!"
She was getting herself deeper into trouble.
"What the hell is that, some stage name?"
"You're Rino! I can tell!"
"Did you fake your death? Is this some kind of stunt?"
"Why are you here at my gym?!"
"Depending on your answer, I won’t go easy on you!"
His short temper hadn’t changed a bit.
He was already getting worked up by himself.
"I told you, I’m not Rino!"
"You four-eyed, balding, chubby idiot!"
Rino raised her voice.
"You said it! You little—I'm gonna kill you!"
His husky voice trailed off, making it hard to catch the last part.
"I’ve already died once; how do you plan on killing me again, you idiot!"
Before she knew it, her former colleagues had gathered around them in a circle.
They whispered among themselves, "It's Rino. She’s alive."
Rino knew she had to overcome the pressure.
She was a professional boxer who had survived many battles.
She would find a way to handle this situation!
With that resolve, she straightened up, winked, and replied confidently.
"I'm not Rino! I’m Satoko!"
But everyone kept whispering, "No, that’s definitely Rino."
No one believed she was Satoko.
Rino's plan crumbled right before her eyes.
At this point, she decided to spill everything.
"Alright, fine! I am Rino! I came back from hell because I was lonely!"
It wasn’t a lie.
Everyone started to respond, "Welcome back!"
But the coach said, "I’m not forgiving you!"
Rino's heart sank.
"I’m sorry, Coach! I shouldn’t have disappeared like that! I’m really sorry."
The coach shouted at Rino.
"You made a fool out of me!"
Rino mimicked her signature karate chop.
"I’m sorry for hurting you, Coach! Please forgive me!"
The coach broke down in tears.
His crying face looked like a newborn creature, as unsettling as ever.
No matter how many times she saw it, it was always disturbing.
"We searched for you, all over the place."
"We even handed out flyers."
"We were so worried that you might be dead."
"When we heard on the news that you had died, the person who took it the hardest was the coach."
"No matter who you saved, the fact remains that you died."
"But there must be a reason why you came back from hell."
"Tell us the truth."
Trainer Satoru spoke up in place of the coach.
Rino nodded and told them everything.
Her story was sad and heartbreaking, and everyone felt a deep sympathy for her.
"Coach, is it okay if Rino re-joins the gym?"
Satoru asked the coach.
Through his tears and a mix of sobs and his husky voice, the coach replied,
"Yes. Of course."
"Coach says yes! That’s great news, Rino!"
Rino was always impressed by Satoru’s ability to handle the coach, who was like a creature.
35:
That night, Rino visited Hiroshi's room.
"Hiroshi, I need to talk to you."
Rino recounted everything that had happened at the gym.
Hiroshi was speechless.
What is Rino planning to do?
"Are you planning to go public about the switch?"
Hiroshi asked cautiously.
"That would totally freak everyone out."
Rino had a look on her face like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"You're starting high school next week. What are you planning to do?"
Annoyed, Hiroshi changed the subject.
"About that! No plan."
Rino said, eating Hiroshi's cup of ice cream.
"The school is going to be in a panic."
Hiroshi said seriously.
"People will think you came back as Satoko to get revenge."
Rino burst out laughing.
"That sounds great! Let's shoot a teaser video beforehand!"
"I'll bring justice with my fists!"
Rino mimicked a famous character.
Hiroshi thought that one day she might get caught by the authorities and become a subject for human experimentation.
"Maybe you should keep a low profile?"
Hiroshi tried to calm her down, but Rino cut him off.
"I should have consulted you about the gym. I'm sorry."
Rino said, winking as she made her signature karate chop gesture.
Hiroshi was impressed to see Rino genuinely acknowledging her mistake.
Her expression was overflowing with charm.
Hiroshi thought she had a natural gift for winning people over.
"Let's stop pretending to be Satoko!"
Hiroshi suddenly had an idea.
"You should just act as yourself, Rino!"
"Without revealing that it's actually you."
"And let's go ahead with the teaser video!"
Hiroshi was someone who liked to take his time arriving at a conclusion.
For someone like Rino, who acts on the spur of the moment, the process didn’t matter.
"For what purpose?" Rino pressed for the conclusion.
"For revenge, of course.
The bullies enjoy seeing Satoko suffer.
But if you, Rino, just act like yourself, it’ll be fine.
You have the power to captivate people.
Even the bullies will be captivated and change their ways.
I think that's the best revenge."
Hiroshi explained.
The word "captivate" resonated with Rino as she nodded.
After a long silence, Rino asked again.
"Explain it to me one more time!" Rino was entranced by the idea of captivating others.
Hiroshi realized that she just wanted to hear the part about captivation again.
This time, he went into more detail, emphasizing the idea of captivation in his explanation.
Rino gazed up at the ceiling, listening with a blissful expression.
Hiroshi, struggling to keep a straight face, explained it over and over again.

Great War RPG: 1900s-1910s Prelude to Great War
Campaign Sourcebook: 1900s-1910s European & Colonial Crises Leading to The Great War
Time Period: 1900 - July 1914 Core Concept: This campaign plunges players into the escalating geopolitical tensions that ultimately detonated into World War I. It's a war of nerves, diplomatic brinkmanship, colonial expansion, arms races, and burgeoning nationalisms, where every incident, no matter how small, has the potential to push the great powers closer to the abyss. Players will experience the atmosphere of an era teetering on the edge, where peace is fragile and war seems both unthinkable and inevitable.
Geographic Focus: Primarily Europe (especially the Balkans, Central Europe, Franco-German border) and key colonial territories (Morocco, African colonies, Pacific islands).
DEFCON Level Interpretation: In this campaign, DEFCON levels reflect the overall international tension and the immediacy of widespread conflict. Localized incidents might briefly spike the DEFCON for a specific region or mission.
DEFCON 5 (Routine Peace / Naval Race): The default state for much of the early period. Nations are building empires, engaging in economic competition, and participating in an arms race (especially naval), but direct military confrontations between major powers are avoided.
Effect: No penalty to rolls. Focus on intelligence gathering, economic competition, and minor colonial skirmishes.
DEFCON 4 (Increased Preparedness / Colonial Tensions): Major colonial disputes (e.g., Moroccan Crises) or regional annexations (e.g., Bosnian Crisis) elevate tensions. Mobilization plans are updated, and diplomatic rhetoric hardens.
Effect: -1 to all action rolls when dealing with rival national authorities or operating in disputed colonial territories. Increased scrutiny for travel.
DEFCON 3 (Alert Status / Balkan Powder Keg): Crises in the Balkans (e.g., Balkan Wars) create significant risk of wider war. Assassinations, coups, and direct military interventions by regional powers occur. Naval blockades or border troop buildups might be seen.
Effect: -2 to all action rolls in crisis zones. High risk of combat for military personnel. Increased intelligence activity.
DEFCON 2 (Further Increase / July Crisis): The final, rapid escalation to general war, such as the period following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Ultimatums are issued, alliances are triggered, and mass mobilizations begin.
Effect: -3 to all action rolls. Imminent combat and desperate diplomatic efforts. Escape or preparation for war become paramount.
DEFCON 1 (Maximum Alert / Declaration of War): War has been declared. National borders are closing. This level marks the transition into "The Great War" proper, and this campaign's story typically concludes as it begins.
Effect: -4 to all action rolls for any action preventing or delaying the war; focus shifts to survival and immediate combat.
Overall Atmosphere: Imperial ambition, rising nationalisms, a complex web of alliances, technological advancement (arms race), a sense of inevitable doom mixed with complacent optimism, and the "Great Power Game" played by diplomats, spies, and military strategists.
Key Historical Events & Context (1900-1914)
Early 1900s: Scramble for Africa & Asia: European powers (Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium) are aggressively expanding and consolidating their colonial empires, leading to frequent diplomatic clashes and smaller conflicts over territory and resources.
Anglo-German Naval Arms Race (1900s-1914): Germany's ambition to build a High Seas Fleet to rival Britain's Royal Navy fuels deep suspicion and a costly escalation in warship construction.
First Moroccan Crisis (1905-1906): Germany challenges French influence in Morocco, testing the newly formed Anglo-French Entente Cordiale. Resolved diplomatically but highlights German isolation and strengthens the Entente.
Bosnian Crisis (1908-1909): Austria-Hungary annexes Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ottoman territories it had occupied since 1878. This enrages Serbia (which had aspirations for a Greater Serbia including Bosnia) and Russia (Serbia's protector), further escalating Austro-Serbian and Austro-Russian tensions.
Second Moroccan (Agadir) Crisis (1911): Germany sends a gunboat to Agadir, Morocco, again challenging French influence. This crisis nearly leads to war, further solidifying the Anglo-French-Russian Triple Entente against the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy).
Italo-Turkish War (1911-1912): Italy invades Ottoman Libya, exposing the weakness of the Ottoman Empire and encouraging Balkan states.
First Balkan War (1912-1913): A coalition of Balkan states (Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro) attacks the Ottoman Empire, largely expelling it from Europe. Serbia's gains alarm Austria-Hungary.
Second Balkan War (1913): Bulgaria attacks its former allies over territorial disputes. Bulgaria is defeated, and Serbia emerges even stronger, further infuriating Austria-Hungary and increasing regional instability.
July Crisis (1914): The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo triggers a rapid chain of ultimatums, mobilizations, and declarations of war, pulling all the major European powers into conflict.

GM-less Solo Play Notes for European & Colonial Crises
Playing this campaign solo requires a keen eye for historical detail and a willingness to interpret geopolitical events as direct challenges or opportunities.
Macro Events, Micro Impact: Use the real historical crises as major plot points. When a crisis (e.g., Agadir Crisis) occurs, roll on an "Impact Oracle" (2d6: 1-2 Negative impact on your character/mission, 3-4 Neutral, 5-6 Positive impact/opportunity).
The Pressure Cooker: Emphasize the rising DEFCON level. The penalties to rolls will increase, reflecting the mounting pressure and danger of the era.
Diplomatic Oracles: When your character tries to influence an NPC or a situation, use an Oracle:
"Does this sway them?" (Yes/No Oracle): For negotiations or persuasive attempts.
"What is their true agenda?" (Complication/Advantage Oracle): For determining hidden motives of NPCs.
Information is Power (and Danger): Successfully gathering intelligence should feel rewarding, but failures should mean capture, exposure, or misinformed decisions.
Navigating Alliances: If your character is allied with a nation, remember their allies and rivals. Your actions might inadvertently help or harm your nation's alliances.
"What's the latest news?" Oracle: Regularly consult an "Events Oracle" (2d6: 1-2 New colonial dispute, 3-4 Balkan unrest, 5-6 Arms race acceleration, 7-8 Diplomatic breakthrough (temporary), 9-10 Assassination/coup, 11-12 Major international incident). This pushes the global narrative.
The Personal Cost of Escalation: As the DEFCON rises, ensure your character feels the increasing threat. Do they have to destroy beloved items? Say goodbye to contacts? Face direct threats to their life?
The Final Countdown: The July Crisis of 1914 provides a perfect, frantic climax. Make a series of rapid rolls to see if your character can achieve their final objectives, escape, or secure their position before the declarations of war. The campaign ends as war officially begins.
This campaign offers a captivating journey through the intricate powder keg of the early 20th century, allowing players to shape (or witness) the events leading to the catastrophic Great War.

Sci-Twi about to be transformed into a Polyp
As the sun set over Canterlot High, the school's science lab was abuzz with activity. Twilight Sparkle, known to her friends as Sci-Twi, was engrossed in her latest experiment. She had been studying the magical properties of a rare plant called the Polypus Florus, which was said to have transformative abilities.
Sci-Twi had always been fascinated by the unknown, and her thirst for knowledge often led her to explore uncharted territories. The Polypus Florus was no exception. Its unique ability to transform living beings into polyps intrigued her, and she was determined to uncover its secrets.
With her lab coat on and goggles in place, Sci-Twi carefully handled the Polypus Florus specimen. She had spent weeks studying its properties, analyzing its DNA, and conducting various experiments. But tonight, she was ready to take her research to the next level.
As she prepared the necessary equipment, Sci-Twi couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. She knew the risks involved in experimenting with such powerful magic, but her curiosity outweighed any fear. She had taken all precautions to ensure her safety, or so she thought.
With a deep breath, Sci-Twi activated the magical amplification device she had built. The device emitted a soft hum as it channeled energy into the Polypus Florus. The plant began to glow, its vibrant colors intensifying.
As the energy surged through the specimen, Sci-Twi

Dame Cyane #26 (English version)
I have to be VERY careful.
I have three pairs of eyes installed less than a meter from me.
I have to handle my pendulum with finesse...
Or be extra subtle myself…
I take advantage of the fact that all three of them are concentrating on unfolding the map of the country to discreetly pass my tentacular partner through the smoke of the white sage.
That being done, I notice that Mack seems to be looking for my gaze.
Bringing out the old files (if I dare say so) seems to bother him...
Why?…
I can only see one possible explanation: other interrogations ended badly for him.
How? Who's to say...
Plus: our man's lost gaze comes back to the forefront.
Hm…
- We are ready, Madame Juneau.
- Then, let us start.
While Mack seemed to like my cards, he didn't seem to be a fan of my pendulum.
Is he afraid I'll unearth some sinister secret?
If that were the case, he would not have requested an Akashic reading or agreed to work with me.
How strange…
The more time I spend in his company, the more
