Whispers of the Hidden Grove
- Players are all first years at Castelobruxo
We start with all students being led into the school by the deputy Headmaster Rafael Oliveira. Rafael is a tall and sturdy man in his mid 40’s. He has a very commanding presence with dark skin, short cropped black hair flecked with grey, sharp brown eyes that miss nothing. He wears practical robes, often with hints of green and brown reflecting the forest and a leather wristband engraved with protective runes.
The students walk through a cave like entrance into a vast hall that is bathed in a soft greenish light filtering through enchanted stain glass windows casting a gentle shadow that dances like leaves in a breeze. The walls are carved from ancient mahogany wood, etched with glowing runes the pulse faintly with magic. At the center of the room lies a shallow circular pool filled with clear water, its surface shimmering with faint colors like a living prism. Above surrounding the room is a balustrade with tables filled with older students watching with their houses.
Vice Headmaster Rafael steps forward, his tall frame commanding the attention of the gathered students. His eyes scan the room, settling on the new students standing nervously before him.
“Welcome, new students, to Castelbruxo! A place where the heart of the rainforest beats in every spell we cast and where ancient spirits watch over us all.” he gestures toward the shimmering pool.
“Before you stands the Pool of the Spirits- our sacred link to the creatures and magic that protects this school and its people. Today, you will be bound to one of the four houses, each chosen by the spirit that calls to your very soul.”
He steps closer to the poo, raising his hand. The water ripples and swirls, before four large statues rise from the water, The houes Sepente-Solar represented by a giant feathered serpent, House Cao-Sombre represented by a dark stone dog, house Arara-Viva represented by a Vibrant Macaw, and finaly house Tige-D'agua represented by a fierce Jaguar.
“One by one, you will approach the pool. The statue that reacts to you reveal where you belong.”
Rafael’s gaze lingers a moment longer, then he nods with quiet resolve and one by one the students are called up by an unseen voice. As each player approach the Dark Xolo god statue’s jade eyes shine and the dog lowers his head in a gentle bow of respect or acceptance. A soft whimper emits from the statue and its tail wags before returning to normal.
Three figures step forward from the cluster of Cão-Sombra students. Their robes are dark forest green trimmed in black, each embroidered with a subtle image of the Xolo dog's silhouette.
• Eduardo Costa — A tall sixth-year boy with tightly curled hair and a serious face. His green robes are worn and faded at the edges, and he carries the quiet authority of someone who has seen real danger. Eduardo nods respectfully to each newcomer, offering a solid, no-nonsense presence.

• Success reveals something is terribly wrong: the stairs are enchanted to trap minds and split souls.
• Failure means wasting time, believing everything is "fine."

The Wendigo:
After three people step on the stairs or after three rounds, a tear opens at the top of the staircase, and the wendigo slips free into the world:
• Visually: It appears to each character as the most beautiful creature they've ever imagined — radiantly divine.
• Physically: It smells horrifying, like rancid meat and death.
The wendigo moves silently, luring others closer.
If it scratches or touches a character:
• The victim feels drawn to the jungle, resisting any suggestion to leave.

Insight DC 16 (when first seeing the wendigo):
• Success lets a player realize something is wrong despite the beauty.
• Failure means the player views it as completely harmless.
Possible Solutions:
• Casting Dispel Magic on the stairs halts the enchantment temporarily.
• Pouring salted water (learned via magical lore) on the steps disrupts the enchantment.
• Knocking a catatonic friend off the stairs snaps them out of the trance.
• Identifying the rot smell and trusting their instincts can help them resist the glamour.
• If the wendigo is banished or driven back across the threshold (through force or magic), the stairs lose their power... for now.

• The wendigo appears after the third player (or NPC) steps on the stairs or 3 rounds after the trap is triggered.

• Initially, it uses Illusory Beauty to charm and confuse the players.
• The wendigo avoids direct attacks initially, using hit-and-run tactics to confuse and isolate players.
• Players can also end battle by running to a teacher for help as they know how to handle the beast.
Turn-by-Turn Outline:
Round 1:
• Wendigo appears and uses Illusory Beauty on all players in sight.
• It tries to move around the battlefield, keeping its distance but eyeing a vulnerable target (someone who failed the saving throw).
Round 2:
• If a player is charmed, the wendigo moves close and makes a Claw attack.
• If no one is charmed, it moves closer to try again, staying just outside reach.
Round 3+:
• Wendigo alternates between attacking and repositioning.
• If a player uses salt or a salt item, it reacts violently (taking extra damage and losing its charm).
• If cornered or below 7 HP, it tries to flee deeper into the jungle, forcing players to decide whether to chase or retreat.

What the players see:

During the fight:

• The players can focus on distracting or attacking the wendigo while she attempts to banish it.
