How to Write a First Draft Without Perfectionism
Maybe you’ve heard that first drafts are supposed to suck, but what does that really mean? What does a sucky first draft look like? How do you allow yourself to suck? Why would you even want to allow yourself to write something that sucks in the first place?Because otherwise, you’ll most likely be crippled by the writer’s arch nemesis: perfectionism.Did you just cringe? We all experience it when we sit down to write, arrange everything just so, type a sentence or two (or a bit more if you’re lucky), and then it strikes—your inner editor. It smacks you across the face and demands that you fix that grammar mistake right now. Or worse, yo...
One Evening.
Yuki stood in the boxing ring of a gym.
In the vast ring, there were only her and her opponent.
No referee, no second. Only a cold, lifeless webcam was mounted on the corner post.
Why was this the case?
Over the past few years, the boxing industry had been plagued by scandals—bullying, harassment, match-fixing, and even suicides.
The industry's decline was severe.
Struggling gyms resorted to organizing unofficial gambling matches, treating fighters as disposable. The boxing association turned a blind eye.
Eventually, gangs and criminal organizations got involved, forcing the homeless and the desperate into the ring, using them up and discarding them like trash.
As a result, once night fell, ordinary people feared going near the gym.
Instead, a different kind of crowd gathered.
During the day, these men would train new fighters in makeshift, harsh conditions, yelling at them outside the gym.
By sunset, like shadows scattered across the ground, they became part of the landscape.
They had come, of course, to recruit more fighters to replace those who had already been consumed by the matches.
But tonight, perhaps because it was late, no one was around.
The gym’s glass windows, cracked and patched with tape, bore red-black stains—remnants of old blood.
Yuki stood before the corner post, wearing her worn-out blue boxing gloves, absentmindedly gazing at the ring floor, lightly touching the large bruise on her right eyelid.
The writer just wrote, "Yuki was waiting for the match to start."
But when the gong sounded, Yuki had no intention of fighting.
Normally, one steps into the ring to win.
But her eyes showed no sign of determination.
As mentioned earlier, the boxing gyms were thoroughly corrupt.
Yuki, who had long admired boxing, had now grown disillusioned. Stepping into the ring today was her small act of resistance against this corruption.
She was not "waiting." She had been "cornered", with no escape.
On top of that, today's opponent also played a part in influencing Yuki’s lack of motivation.
The match, scheduled for 5 PM, had yet to begin.
So, as Yuki desperately contemplated how to deal with today’s fight, she absentmindedly listened to the sound of her opponent retching.
The silence in the ring grew heavier, to the point where she could almost hear her opponent’s heartbeat.
The evening sky darkened, and through the gym’s glass, Yuki could see a satellite broadcast van parked at the roadside, its antenna pointed at the heavy, dim clouds.
Losing meant hell awaited. Yuki had no choice but to brace herself.
But "if I fight" remained just a conditional phrase.
Even as she acknowledged that she had no choice but to fight, she still couldn’t muster the courage to fully accept the reality—"Win this fight and use the money to pay off my debt."
---
How did it come to this?
Just a few days ago, Yuki had no intention of ever boxing.
She had simply signed a paper at a friend’s request, unaware that it was an illegal contract.
"Get the money immediately. If you can't, step into the ring."
Yuki could only laugh.
She was practically a boxing novice.
But when told that losing meant something even worse awaited, she realized there was no escape.
—Is there even a reason to survive like this?
Yuki stared at her fists.
She lowered her gaze, took a deep breath, and slowly lifted her head.
The city was cold enough to need heating.
Outside the gym, the wind blew through the group of men waiting for orders, carrying the evening darkness along with it.
Yuki hunched her shoulders, scanning the ring in her blue outfit with white side stripes.
She looked for a blind spot where the cameras wouldn’t capture her, a place where she could steal a moment’s rest.
Noticing that the corner post’s camera was angled slightly to the left, she thought, "If I stay here, they won’t see me."
Careful not to draw attention, she stepped toward the camera’s blind spot, her blue boxing shoes moving soundlessly.
Then, moments after the gong rang—
Near the red corner post, within the camera’s view, a girl hunched like a frightened cat, suppressing her groans as she endured a relentless barrage of punches.
The ring lights faintly illuminated her right eyelid, swollen and dark with bruises.
---
The Match Begins
Yuki had assumed her opponent, like all the others, would lack the will to fight.
But as soon as the match began, she realized her mistake.
The girl attacked fiercely, showing no hesitation.
A piercing jab sliced through the air.
Yuki barely dodged it, feeling the wind graze her cheek.
Had she hesitated, the punch would have landed squarely.
A fast one-two combination followed.
Too fast—
Yuki instinctively raised her guard.
A dull thud echoed as her opponent’s fist slammed into her arms.
Pain surged through her.
But she was still standing.
Breathing was painful. Sweat blurred her vision.
But stopping meant the end—she knew that.
Her opponent was just as desperate.
Yuki peered cautiously through her guard.
Another jab came.
If she lost focus for even a second, she would be finished.
Her mind was blank.
Yet, without thinking, she stepped forward.
A right straight to the body, delivered without hesitation.
And in a low voice, she murmured,
"Don’t hate me for winning. I have no choice—I need to repay my debt."
A sharp impact.
The world went silent.
The last thing Yuki saw was her opponent collapsing.
As the referee counted, Yuki stood in the blue corner.
A small drop of blood on the floor.
Whose was it?
It didn’t matter anymore.
Yuki took a final glance at her opponent, still on the ground.
She would never know what she was thinking.
But she turned away, walking forward.
There was no turning back.
From then on, no one knew what became of Yuki.

With stories, writing, or art being so integral to our lives, it is hard not to let it singularly define us instead of letting it be healthy part of us. As a result, we judge ourselves based on warped standards for writing that ...

• COMICS: Comics are basically short stories told in a more visual way. Even a graphic novel wouldn’t exactly be considered a “novel” because novel is defined by a set word count minimum. If you really have a story you want to write out but can't seem to make it detailed or long enough to be a book, you may want to consider a comic especially if your passion is for drawing and visual things. Making a comic, as I've personally learned, isn’t something you can just go in head first without some kind of plan. I’m not at all a planner so making a comic I could finish beyond one or two pages was definitely a struggle.

Zootopia 2- What I Hope To See
There are so many highly anticipated movies coming out in 2025 and 2026:
- Shrek 5
- Toy Story 5
- Captain America: Brave New World
- Dune: Messiah
- Avatar: Fire and Ash
- Jurassic World: Rebirth
- Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning
- Elio
- How To Train Your Dragon (LA)
- Moana (LA)
- Lilo & Stitch (LA)
- Superman
- Michael
- Tron: Ares
- M3GAN 2.0
- The Conjuring 4
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps
- Thunderbolts*
- Hoppers
- A Minecraft Movie
- Many other Oscar nominees
Well, my most anticipated film is, in shameless bias, ‘Zootopia 2.’ That sneak peek at D23 has lived in my head rent free ever since it aired, and I am seeing this opening night even if it kills me.
So, expectedly, here are ten things I am hoping to see in ‘Zootopia 2.’
1. PLEASE BE UNANIMOUSLY GOOD
I would take this over any of the upcoming nine requests, but PLEASE WDAS- you have literally brought back Oscar winners Byron Howard and Jared Bush to run the story and direction, and that trailer was arguably the best theatrical reveal of D23. If that same humor and interesting story can be maintained throughout the whole movie and deliver on some of the asks below, then hopefully, WDAS can bag their first Oscar nomination since 2022 (pending ‘Moana 2’ results) and this film can be a $1B success.
2. Stress Nick and Judy dynamic
Jared Bush literally wrote Nick and Judy’s first and second exchanges word for word in the first film, and his ability to show their growing friendship in a beautiful and brilliant way went down in Disney history. This film needs to enhance that in a way all audiences can get behind, and I’ll go ahead and say this- at the end of the first film, Judy quite literally says she loves Nick, and making them a couple would appease a lot of people. I mean, look at DeviantArt- we all want it! Do not separate them or make one more important than the other- equal screen time, equal moments and iconic lines and scenes, and hopefully an equal love!
3. These stakes need to be HIGH
If you read the description of the film, it clearly states the plot revolves around ‘Nick and Judy’s most daunting case yet.” A quick reminder to everyone that catching a snake, whom is being played by one of the nicest celebrities in Hollywood I’ll note, is going to be more intense than a plot that tried to frame the whole predatory race of natural savagery according to that. Honestly, I want to see a story where one of these cops get into a life or death situation reliant on the other to save them, and then they join up in the finale (all of this in the third act, keep them together for 1 & 2). Have something that could tear Zootopia apart just like last time, but give it more emphasis. Here’s a fair bar for WDAS to surpass- in the finale of this movie, Bellwether convinced us audiences for a minute that Nick was going to kill Judy by going rabid- pretty dark plot line. MAKE IT DARKER.
4. This villain better be pure evil, or there better be a twist
Gary is the name of the new villain- literally one of the cutest villain names I’ve heard at WDAS. He probably won’t be an all-time menace, but do not do something like Magnifico where he dips into madness- that plot line nowadays is poorly received. Make this guy pure mischief and purely bad- don’t turn him into a twist hero, either. Bellwether is one of the better villains in WDAS history (top half) because her twist was such a hard left. So, WDAS can do that and make us happy, or we could get a classic well-written evil villain that doesn’t change. Ke Huy Quan is such a nice person, and I’ve never seen him as a villain, so in part, PLEASE MAKE HIM GOOD WDAS!
5. More movie references
‘Zootopia’ became world-famous for its famous reinterpretation of ‘The Godfather,’ ‘Breaking Bad’ reference, and last but not least, the “unreleased” movies from Duke that paid homage to past and upcoming Disney hits were all hilarious and age like wine. More movie references came in that trailer, so keep them coming!
6. Flawless animation again!
WDAS needs to remind people their animation is insane, and ‘Wish,’ although beautiful, took on a style on animation cameras over 85 years old and gave many people the wrong impression. To date, ‘Zootopia’ has the second most flawless fluent animation SCIENTIFICALLY of all time- ‘Coco’ is #1. ‘Zootopia 2’ must have zero mistakes so no one can call Disney out. Make a movie worthy of the $1B it will make, and Disney will be back on top in animation again!
7. Grow up with your audience- just enough though
‘Zootopia’ will have released four months shy of ten years prior when ‘Zootopia 2’ releases, and that means you have to pull what ‘Inside Out 2’ did and be willing to ride a fine line between more mature and still child friendly audiences. Make humor that will hit us older kids hard and make kids laugh in between. Tell a story that can be dark when watched by a kid long into their future, and make a series of scenes that will make it worth rewatching as we grow up. ‘Wish’ and ‘Strange World’ was very focused on a very old and very young audience with the makeup of most of Earth not included in the mix. Appeal to all age groups and grow up just enough so your audience will love it.
8. Don’t change the plot for the worst
If Judy leaves the ZPD or both her and Nick don’t get to be on the force in the ways they once were, then what was the point of Judy’s dreams and lifetime goals in the first film? If the story ends with them in love or married with a new branch of casework they can do—or SOMETHING like that—people will be unable to complain. Keep what works and things will go better. This whole idea of going undercover sounds BRILLIANT, and I’m hoping it works out.
9. Prioritize everything on a fine line
If I were to give a complaint about ‘Wish,’ I’ll admit that focuses such as character development, story, and comedy are all blocked into different segments and don’t often mix together. Well, ‘Zootopia’ did that well the first time, so do it again. Jared Bush is a mastermind of a writer- he literally has ‘Moana,’ ‘Zootopia,’ ‘Encanto,’ and ‘Moana 2’ under his belt, and now this. Please do what you do best and give us a world class story blending everything together!
10. Bring everyone back with no changes
Everyone did a great job in the first ‘Zootopia,’ and every character was loved- Jared Bush has confirmed in an interview that he is “trying to bring everyone back,” and that would be awesome. Shooting for this movie started a while back, so time will tell who returns and who doesn’t, but I think we can all agree we want everyone back.
Overall, I trust WDAS to deliver a great movie that further includes the Disney magic this world has already established.
All I’ll say to Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and WDAS- you have created great groundwork for this upcoming moment, where you have an Oscar winning franchise focused on a visionary idea of animals living in a fully utopian society. You have the chance to extend this story for the better and remind everyone why you are amongst the greatest at your jobs in the whole world.
WDAS, you have the tools.
WDAS, PLEASE DON’T SCREW UP! YOUR SNEAK PEEK LOOKED INCREDIBLE!!!
