Tepeyollotl - Aztec Jaguar God by ScribbleFox Tepeyollotl - Aztec Jaguar God by ScribbleFox
This is an ink drawing of the Aztec god Tepeyollotl. It took forever!! Ink pens are not the best medium for making something this detailed. It was fun tho, and it let me do a bit of research into one of the the more unusual cultures in the world - the Aztecs.

According to Aztec lore, Tepeyollotl is known as the Jaguar of Night. He is the lord of animals, darkened caves, echoes and earthquakes. In some legends he is a variant of the god Tezcatlipoca - who is the opposite and rival of the snake god Quetzalcoatl. This is why I've depicted him looking brooding and holding an anaconda. In one version of the Aztec creation story the two gods work together to create the world, but in it Tezcatlipoca looses his foot to a huge crocodilian monster - which is why the serpent is encircling one of his feet.

It was an interesting project, tho it took over a month of lunches, coffee breaks, and before-bed sessions. After this pic I had to take a break from traditional media; my current project is in photoshop. :) I'll save that for another post tho. I hope you like this guy -

DUDE.

TALK ABOUT SKILL AND PATIENCE.

I tried to draw certain animals in Aztec style and believe me, catching the interesting, cultural details (like the engraving on the side of the throne) is DIFFICULT. I'm still practicing but... you're so talented to have challenged and completed this. ;w;

Stumbled across this in the middle of researching Tezcatlipoca and Tepeyollotl. It's a really great picture, I love the detail, and the attention to lore that you gave in the image itself. Well done!

Nice art! I would like to ask for permission if it's okay to have your art be part of my list on my site? I am looking forward to feature some great gods and goddesses on my site. You can check out my site here, at the bottom. Of course I'll put a credit that this is your own art. :)
Hope you'll agree! \(^_^)/

Tepeyollotl is just Tezcatlipoca's nahualli. (Quetzalcoatl is a rattle snake.)

This is pretty good though. Is that jaguar on the throne from the werejaguar motif of the Olmecs? I know I've seen it before.

I don't even... This is so far beyond amazing that I can't figure out where to start the compliments on it. Jaguar obsessed me is beyond thrilled, but I'd love this even if jaguars had no significance to me. In a bit I'll post something more coherent comment-wise, but I'm almost in shock at the awesomeness that is this :) Oh, and by the way, this is fav'd :)

Quetzacoatl and Tepeyollotl are again a symbolic opposition between the moon which is the aquatic world for Aztecas and the sun wich is the earthly world. It is an opposition between influences of oriental civilizations from the Gulf of Mexico (the aquatic world) and the Chichimeca past of Aztecas (the earthly world) in deserts from the North.

I really like your artwork and I think symbols and colors are good for this god who is probably an oriental God with tropical colors like blue and green. Really beautiful.

This is a fascinating work, not only for the tremendous amount of detail that went into it, but for the subject matter as well. I love it. I love big cats, and Mexican Mythology-although this is the first I had heard of this one. I did know that Tezcatlipoca was associated with Jaguars though, and was a Night god, as well as being the patron God of both sorcerers and the Jaguar Knights.
