Good Critique vs Bad Critique
Community Week
Heya awesome people! :la: It has been a long time since I wrote for Community Week, so here I present you a new article on Good and Bad critiques- How to differentiate between them, how to react to them and preserving self confidence! This article is dedicated to a friend who recently lost her confidence due to an overly insulting critique. So to make every thing clear and concise, here is the index:

Artist tip: Use References! plus links
This is something a lot of artists need to change their mind on. Somehow a bunch of us were taught at some point, or heard, that we shouldn't use references. Some teachers may say you can ONLY use references from life.
That's dumb.
Yes, if you have something available to you in real life, use that as a ref! But most of the time what we want we can't find or it's not possible for us to get a real life ref for what we want to do.
We need to learn how things work, so the best thing to do is look at references and over time you'll learn the details of certain things through it! If you don't know how something looks, look it up! Don't just guess!
When I started to do original art, I don't remember being taught to not look at refs but I had this overwhelming feeling like I SHOULDN'T use references. I felt like that cheapened the art. I suffered for it and my art back then was very wonky and didn't make sense, because I didn't know how things work!
Remember: you don't magically know how somet

How to beat procrastination (part 2)
Most of the excuses for not drawing is lacking of ideas. On part 1 of this journal I explained why I find it useful to keep a notebook with you, and to write down your ideas whenever possible.
This second part is about developing the habit of drawing. Hope you find it useful!

:bulletblue:Create the habit of drawing:bulletblue:

First thing to know about creating new habits is that it works kinda like inertia law:

"An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion."

Which means that the more you postpone your drawings the more you'll feel like delaying them. This procrastination abyss can be endless. For instance, I didn't draw anything in 2013 until the end of August when I bought my f

The Palette Project

Bullet; BlueBullet; BlueParadigm ShiftBullet; BlueBullet; Blue

On 2014 I've imposed myself a challenge: "I should draw a doodle a day, during the whole year".The reason why I took such a challenge was because I wasn't happy with how much I created on the year before, on 2013.
Before starting the challenge I would procrastinate instead of drawing, I would wait for some magic sort of inspiration to come in order to draw anything at all.
That was the paradigm, the standards of my work flow.
After concluding the 365 Days of Doodles project I had a new paradigm: I can create one black&white drawing everyday.
What I want to do now in 2015 is changing the paradigm again: I want to add color palettes to my doodles. Seven, to be more specific. :)

How to draw during 365 days

By the beginning of 2014 I started this account and uploaded a doodle a day during a year. It was the most challenging thing I ever did and it helped me loads on improving my art.
I've seen a lot of mentions on my inbox about artists that are starting their own 365 Days challenge and I want to write this journal to share what I've learned through my experience and maybe encourage some of you to join this long term journey.

It's okay to start simple!

My first doodles were waaay more simple than the other ones. If I had to start the project again I would still do them simple. Of course, starting this challenge is very exciting but it's a dead end if you put a heavy load on yourself at the beginning!
Focus on knowing your pace first. How much time does it take you to finish your drawings?

Stay original

How to beat procrastination (part 1)
As I said on a previous submission, I'm planning to make some tutorials on the upcoming December. Before that, however, I feel like I can help on another subject, which comes before even starting your drawing: Procrastination. I mean, procrastination towards your own drawings.
If you're not familiar with this word:
pro-cras-ti-na-tion |prəˌkrastəˈnāSHən, prō-|
noun
"the action of delaying or postponing something."

Why am I talking about this?
Well, a year ago I used to be a professional procrastinator. I've imposed the 365 Days of Doodles challenge to myself for this particular reason.
While procrastination is to some degree a natural phenomenon and can’t be completely eradicated, you can use the following strategies to get in the habit of getting drawings done.
Mind that these are not golden rules or such, just strategies that work fo

Thanks for the llama :happybounce:

I knew a llama once. At least I thought I knew him. I mean, how well can anyone really know anyone, much less a llama. With their air of mystery and thinly veiled contempt. It’s hard. But I digress.
His name was Kevin. But for reasons I will never understand, he would only ever answer to Albert. Identity issues aside, things started out okay. The usual introductory sniffing and sneezing went well, despite his allergies, but then things started going downhill during the ritual licking phase of the pleasantries. We pushed through. And had it not been for the spitting, we might have even been able to make it work, but alas, after just 3 seconds of bittersweet brotherhood, we finally decided to part ways. It’s kind of sad, when you think about it. Spitting seems like such an innocent thing to fight over, but he was pretty adamant that I should stop and that was just never going to happen. We might have overcome that issue, but Kevin, like all llamas, was very competitive. First came the stench competitions. Then it was belching contests. And lastly, a painstaking count to see which one was hairier. You can clearly see why our relationship was doomed. The poor fellow was a bit of a sore loser.
So he snuck out, taking with him a failed friendship, an obliviously optimistic dread of the future, and my sixth favorite toothbrush. Now that he is gone, I can honestly say, it's for the best. He was too much of a chick magnet anyway and who needs that drama? :shakefist:

Full disclaimer, as Kevin’s official biographer, a position of which he blackmailed me into (don’t ask), I’ve been instructed to inform you about his ongoing series. The journey starts here with The Kevin Chronicles - Chapter 1, and this gallery contains the rest. You should check it out.

*End of cue card*

And don't worry, they're pretty short.
No pressure though, only if you want.
